The Standard CD: A Rascal Review

By rascal

I blame Madonna.

Ever since Madge made production paramount to performance in pop music, the voice has played an increasingly diminished role for all but the boldest of virtuosos. Over the two decades since this sublimation began, arrangers and producers have not only become increasingly adept at making up for a lack of vocal prowess with production technique, they have correspondingly become inept at properly managing true vocal nuance when it happens to show up in the studio. For all its accomplishments, much of this production treats its eponymous star like an ingredient rather than as the main course.

David Archuleta is mainly a bright, engaging compendium of smart, solid pop and pop-rock material that showcases the teenager’s impressive skills as a singer, songwriter, and collaborator. What the album may lack in coherence it makes up for in variety, even if it does, inexplicably, lack even one soaring power ballad of the type that might have been prodigious on a David Archuleta CD. Indeed, the album seems an almost strategic refutation of expectations (this from an artist who claimed to be entirely devoid of competitive strategy during his American Idol participation).

Unlike previous show finalists (Kelly Clarkson, Carrie Underwood) who were rushed through the post-show studio meat-grinder and managed to release albums with enough coherence and virtuosity to please both critics and audiences alike, David is not as easily defined by existing genre categories. Which isn’t to say that he doesn’t have an innate ability to step into a genre and make a success of it on his own terms (a skill that was under-appreciated during his season on Idol), but that the possibility for a quick and perfect match between the talent and the market is much reduced. Given the potential for such an uneasy fit, the album is a victory. But it comes at a cost.

Through all of his humility, his reluctance to be considered a star or even the center of attention, David is nothing if not game. Whether it’s agreeing to sign all manner of odd items including body parts for fans, dancing “the Wiggelow” with an entire Catholic girls’ school, or cheerfully answering the most inane and impertinent of interview questions, David meets every request with thoughtfulness and generosity. But it took more than a thoroughgoing attitude to prove that he could channel the enormous scope of his talent into the somewhat stringent parameters of contemporary pop music. There were the inevitable difficulties. He got so frustrated with the process at one point that he reportedly wondered aloud how he could consider giving up after God had offered him all this opportunity. Some of that frustration led to explosions of creativity: When he realized there were too few solid song choices from the material offered, he decided to write his own. Several of his compositions and collaborations are now included on the CD, or slated as premium release bonus tracks.

David more than shows up his early critics who dismissed his potential to serve up radio-ready fare with the hit single “Crush” right out of the gate. There is a good handful of potential subsequent singles including “A Little Too Not Over You,” an insanely catchy number that David collaborated on; “Touch My Hand,” another collaboration that sounds like a cross between Coldplay and Sheryl Crow; “Barriers,” my personal least favorite cut, but an arm-waver that is likely to be a young crowd pleaser; and “To Be With You,” which, despite the fact that I am thoroughly unqualified to make assessments about the contemporary pop music market, may well turn out to be the largest-selling single off the album. It’s the only track on the standard issue CD that comes close to showcasing what David does better than almost anyone else, and what the public will inevitably come to treasure him for. The inimitable Archie heart connection is in this one. It’s powerful, even despite the stultifyingly generic arrangement and the unnecessary duet treatment on the chorus (it should be illegal to pair David’s voice with anyone else’s).

The one song that offers a tantalizing glimpse of where David might go musically when he has the time and credibility to ignore conventional parameters is “Desperate,” which sounds as if it belongs on a different album altogether–a more mature album, one with fewer capitulations to current trends. For such a sweet and unassuming guy, David does darkness extremely well. I happen to believe that one of the reasons his “uplifting” songs work as well as they do–”Angels,” “Imagine”–is because of an underlying melancholy, symbolized by that cry in his voice; the feeling that in grace lies an awareness of suffering.

In trying to package a talent as unique and prodigious as David Archuleta, even the most capable effort can wind up feeling inhibited. Add to this the preposterous schedule mandated by a production driven more by revenue opportunity than by artistic integrity, and it is perhaps surprising that David’s first major recording effort is as satisfying as it is. Still, time matters, and would have undoubtedly brought even this material to a stronger place. The ability to accelerate his own creative process was undoubtedly helped by the performance demands of new material every week on AI, but David remains an artist whose work benefits from a slight saturation of time. Look at how “Angels,” which was already an anthem, evolved over the course of the tour to become, in Tulsa, an all-out, jaw-dropping event. In contrast to many of his pop music peers, David is fundamentally a live performance artist. The connection he establishes with his audience is for him a creative conduit. David should ultimately be one of those artists who develops his material in concert and then records, rather than the prevailing reverse route, valued for its higher revenue potential.

I like the album. But what I like about it doesn’t necessarily have a whole lot to do with what I love about David Archuleta. I look it this way: Would I have recognized what I now understand to be the virtues of a once-in-a-generation performer from this collection alone? Not likely. David’s voice, with its enormous nuance and subtlety, is given somewhat short shrift in this collection. Does this material prove that David can be successful, perhaps even consequential, as a standard-fare pop star? Sure. And although I may fully understand and even completely agree why it makes sense at this point to package filet mignon as hamburger, it doesn’t mean I have to love the idea.

Ok, Rascal, down boy. Leave Madonna alone, or we’re gonna have a war. I am a huge Madonna fan. Now, I might agree with you that Madonna is not known for her voice, but she certainly did make up for it in MANY other ways. Let’s list a few:

1) she was one of the first to take the power out of the male-dominated industry CEOs and made critical business decisions for herself that other females later benefited.
2) she took control of her female sexuality and did not apologize it. She owned it instead of letting others dictate what she should or should not do.
3) she was one of the first to fully support gay rights/AIDS, etc.
4) her influence in the pop world is well documented. Look at any current female pop singers and you see a bit of Madonna in them.
5) for a woman, she certainly showed she had balls bigger than most males in the business.

I could go on, but you get the gist.

Now, I haven’t listened to DA’s album yet, because I wanted to wait til Tuesday to get a physical copy of it. Until then, I can’t really agree or disagree with you on how his first CD will be. An artist, to be great, will have to be judged over time, at his/her entire body of work. It is way too early to deem one CD as a representative of what his work will be like years from now.

“David is fundamentally a live performance artist. The connection he establishes with his audience is for him a creative conduit. David should ultimately be one of those artists who develops his material in concert and then records, rather than the prevailing reverse route, valued for its higher revenue potential.”

I am nodding in agreement.

Rascal,

You found the proper words to say what I have been feeling throughout this process. David is capable of so much more than what this album demonstrates. I’ll buy it, gift it, support him and wait for the solo tour. NO ONE has moved me more during a live performance.

Thanks for sharing your observations!

And although I may fully understand and even completely agree as to why it makes sense at this point to package filet mignon as hamburger, it doesn’t mean I have to love the idea.

Be grateful that the meat that’s packaged is the real thing and not some processed burger lacking in nutrients, OK?

For all its accomplishments, much of this production treats its eponymous star like an ingredient rather than as the main course.

This! FTW! That is my main concern with the entire album, but the way I look at it is David is all of 17, which means it would be crazy to expect that his label was going to have him knock it out of the park this early with a debut album (and in such a short time span). This is a solid effort to help him fit in the current music scene. He’s got time to carve out his own space and make a name for himself.

Thanks, Rascal, for posting your review today. I’m waiting until tomorrow or Tuesday to post my own review on my blog. Your perspective helps me to sharpen my own – I have a similar yet differing critique (not least of which is my disagreement over “Barriers,” which is now my favorite of the tracks).

Thank you Rascal for your review .. I must say I have been waiting for it.

I appreciate your thoughts I will re read your review to absorb all that you have said.
I must say I am a huge fan of the song Desperate.. this song grabbed me right from the start. I like this side of David and his voice sounds delicious! His ability to change things up is mind blowing… I am very happy he choose to do this song.
“For such a sweet and unassuming guy, David does darkness extremely well. ” I agree with this — he really does.

I am happy with this, his first CD— I know there will be MONUMENTAL things to come but for right now I am impressed. He is a smart young man he knows what he needs to do and I believe with this album he will accomplish it.

*** I must say I LOVE Barriers….it has grown to be one of my favs ! LOL!

Superlative review. Thought-provoking and astute. I echo your sentiments in that I feel that his debut album is very pleasing but could have been so much more.

For now, though, I’m happy. I love having more David songs to dance around my head and on my lips, and I think the CD will draw a lot of the younger crowd to him. Given a reasonable period of time to produce his next album, I am certain that we and the world will have much to tout. ‘Still waters run deep.’ Most of the world has no clue what they will encounter when David unleases his heart through his music HIS way. We have a clue, but I think even we ‘original’ fans will be blown away in the days to come.

I enjoy all the songs on the album. I can see how almost any of them could become a radio hit. ‘Touch My Hands’, ‘My Hands’, ‘Barriers’, ‘ATNOY’, ‘Your Eyes Don’t Lie’, etc. My personal favorites are ‘You Can’ and even more so, ‘To Be With You’. I cannot listen to this last song without crying, and I can’t stop listening to this song. Help! That wail at the end of “wayyyyyyyee” is just SO beautiful and filled with pathos that I dissolve each time I hear it. It’s stunning in it’s simplicity and yet is deeply powerful and moving.

I think the album will do well. The fact that people, even radio DJs, are unable to decide which tract they like the best is a good sign. A lot of albums have only a tract or two that people really enjoy, much less the opposite which we find on David’s first pop album.

I know we have great things to look forward to, but I for one, am going to enjoy the ride we’re on right now.

An eloquent review–of course!–thanks rascal. I’ll have an upteenth listen through your ears now….

I’m happy that there are no Barriers to appreciating each others’ opinions here! It must be a real pickle for the label to figure out what to release as a 2nd single, since David can easily do *every* style and genre, with a hugh contingent of folks who would carry the banner for each one. It will be interesting to see how this knockout of a first release fairs in the market.

I wish I knew how the radio market works–can’t the station Music Director play whatever they want off the CD? Perhaps the “2nd single” will form in a more grass roots fashion.

With *so many* artists out there who have one–maybe two–good songs on each CD they put out, this from David is truly remarkable.

Daisawesome, I understand your admiration of Madonna as a commodity, but I believe that Rascal is judging her as a singer. I also get what you are saying about look at other successful female singers and you will see a little Madonna in each of them. Yep, Rihanna can’t sing, Britney can’t sing, and Madonna can’t sing. They all rely on gimmicks, catchy or provocative lyrics and sex to sell their songs. Revolutionary, not really. As a matter of fact probably why we are getting such crappy pop music.

Rascal I understand your tepid review. Do I agree with it, yeah, some. Especially the production issues. I do think that if I had not had the idol experience of seeing David, I would still be able to see how special he is. That voice cannot be hidden or quieted by less than stellar production. I do agree that to appreciate the totality of David’s talent one must see him live, in that respect the cd does not do him justice. I also see this as a step towards his growth. Will this cd lead to better ones in the future? Absolutely! Will this cd quiet the critics. Heck no, I mean how can they keep their street cred if they like this cd?

So rascal, do we get an addendum on the 5 songs we have yet to hear? I’ll be waiting, because 2 of the songs are co-written by David and as we all know, Falling is all him.

We ODD fans know David inside and out and thus have higher hopes for him. I know I do, but for now, the songs I’ve heard make my ears very happy. Remember, he said this album is his pride and joy….for now.

:)

Geez, rascal! It can’t be as bad as all that, can it? The cuts I’ve heard sound great, but I haven’t heard all of the cuts as of yet. Let’s face it, this is a David Archuleta CD we’re talking about which means the expectations are much higher than the average pop artist. But by the same token, anything David records is going to be far better than the insipid pop fare that passes as music these days. David will come into his own and wow the world with the talent we already know he has. In the meantime, I’m sure I will be thrilled to be able to hear David’s heavenly voice whenever I wish and look forward to the day when he can once again enthrall us with his own music in his own solo concert tour!

Now THERE’S a review. Thank you, Rascal.

brooklyndawn – “Will this cd quiet the critics. Heck no, I mean how can they keep their street cred if they like this cd?”….many have admitted to Crush (and perhaps more cuts) as being their guilty pleasure…David has a way of converting even the harshest critics…without even trying. For that, I am very hopeful.

carollann…trust me, you will be more than thrilled to hear this album. I have found that I block out some of the “overproduction” and just drink in David’s voice….which is like velvet…really. (JMO)

Josie, I’m with you. I

Oops. Hit a wrong button. Meant to say, I ADORE this album. I love that David does so many of the background vocals and have to listen loud and often to get to all of them. (Barriers is one of my favorite songs on the album for this reson) — but I understand what Rascal is saying and it helps explain some of the other reviews.

For me David Archuleta is the NEW cool ! I have to say I think it is totally HIP to love David Archuleta!!! Talent is always in fashion!

Thanks Rascal for your intelligent review. I love all of the songs on the CD (with slightly varying degrees of intensity) because of David’s voice. I too am looking forward to the CD he puts out next where he has more freedom to produce the music exactly the way he wants it, but in the meantime, I am sooo happy to have anything that features his incredible voice to listen to.

Snarky’s is reporting that David will be sharing the lead float at the Macy’s Thanksgiving Parade with Miley Cyrus! I think that shows how seriously tptb are taking his star power!

To package filet mignon as hamburger…you give most pop singers too much credit Rascal ha ha. I look at them not even as hamburger, but TREET MEAT, without the treat LOL!! You know that generic meat packaged in a can at the grocery store and it is all alike…LOL!!!

BTW, Barriers is my current addiction … My daughter was giving me hard time this morning because I’ve listened to it more than 500 times, according to my itunes account!

brooklyndawn : I don’t think you understand my views; I don’t admire Madonna “as a commodity”. In fact, I admire her as a headstrong woman who knows what she wants and gets it through hardwork and perseverance. I admire people who make things happen in spite of difficult obstacles. I admire visionary who pushes boundaries and challenges my belief of what a person can and can not do. Those are qualities I admire about Madonna. And I admire DA because inspite of his vocal paralysis, he pushes on. His spirit and beliefs in himself and in his music are so strong that nothing can stop him from what he has to do, which is to sing and reach as many people as possible and to rise above the negativity that is directed at him. Surviving AI was a great test for him and it convinced me that he would do well in the future.

DA’s perseverance and great heart are what I admire about him. If you ask me what would constitute success in this pop world now aday, I must say that it would take more than just a great voice. That’s why I believe DA will succeed, because he not only has a great voice, he also has great looks, young age, and great personality. These are his qualities that I think will make him a great success, not whether or not his album is over-produced/under-produced because frankly now aday, to be a success, you have to be able to perform well live (which he does) and not just buy selling CDs alone. An artist’s real income today depends on their live tours, not on CD sell.

: “by selling CDs alone”, not “buy”.

By the way Rascal I loved your review! David does do darkness well. I guess that Desperate is my favorite song on the album. Really shows off his voice and has a deeper meaning than the other songs. The cry in his voice to me…is a “Desperate” cry to reach out to others and make them feel what he is feeling, and wanting to make some kind of connection with them. One of his comments on AI was…”there is always a light at the end of the tunnel”.

It occurs to me that the over-produced quality of the CD may be a reflection of Jive’s feeling–as did David, apparently–that the songs themselves weren’t all that strong? With more established artists vying for the song pool, I can’t help but wonder what was actually available to David at this time. It is bloody hard to write an out-of-the-ballpark song on demand (although we all know David did and will be doing just that), so maybe quirky whistling and louder than necessary instrumental “support” is their answer to the dilemma? Just speculating.

[OK, back to my songwriter DAvatar!]

David is the filet mignon and the rest of the pop singers are just the hamburgers, but without the meat.

There are more than half a dozen in the album that I like, but I really love to death “To Be With You” apart from “Angels”. The first time I heard it, I fell in love with it. It is a ballad that will become an anthem to so many. It will become a theme song to many lovers. It can be a theme song, soundtrack to a romantic love story movie. I can go on and on, this song I predict will become the biggest hit from the album.

Wow rascal, that was a good review; for some reason I was expecting less. I loved the filet mignon made into hamburger comment about the production and the intent of the label. David’s artistry is the real treat despite the production.

However, I am not a pop music fan nor am I the target audience. So it will be really fascinating to track his album’s journey and his PR tour and Jingle Balls/Jams through the end of the year. Never having had the inclination to support an artist at this level before, it has been a truly unique and enriching experience. And no matter the genre, David’s voice still has such impact!

Here’s to the success of David’s album: May his target audience…request from the djs like crazy…attend his concerts in record breaking droves…and buy his CD like they never have before!

First I would like to apologize is I offended anyone with my comment on one of the previous posts, re the whistling into to YEDL. It was not my intention at all.

Now, as I listen, yet again, to the tracks of David’s debut album – the tears streaming down my face – I accept that this young man touches me deep inside on a level that strips me of coherent thought. I just feel. People can talk about the overproduction of the tracks, quirkiness of some of the lyrics … but I just listen to David’s voice, pay attention to the words, and cry. Desperate is the song that I connect with the most, perhaps because of my continuing battle with depression. I can totally relate to being desperate – all the emotions described in the verses… and THE CHORUS, well. “You want somebody, just anybody To lay their hands on your soul tonight You want a reason to keep believin’ That someday you’re gonna see the light.”

David is the one who “layed his hands on MY soul”. He has inspired me to find a way to find my way, back, day by day and to start to come alive.

If I feel this way listening to these album tracks, what will I do when I hear him in concert? I won’t stop me though.

For me, To Be With You and Barriers are right up there with Desparate.

Response to rascal’s post:

“But it took more than a thoroughgoing attitude to prove that he could channel the enormous scope of his talent into the somewhat stringent parameters of contemporary pop music.” Yes, I believe that he wanted to prove he could do pop music. I think because he has such an eclectic mix on this album he has, however, saved himself from pigeon-holeing himself in this genre. This was an album to experiment. Therefore, whatever he does next will be more easily accepted. Very smart, in my opinion. As he has claimed numerous times – “I’m still trying to figure myself out and where I want to go with music”.

“Add to this the preposterous schedule mandated by a production driven more by revenue opportunity than by artistic integrity, and it is perhaps surprising that David’s first major recording effort is as satisfying as it is. Still, time matters, and would have undoubtedly brought even this material to a stronger place.” Because of this we have received MORE of David sooner than we might otherwise have – his co-written and solely-written bonus tracks.

“David is fundamentally a live performance artist. The connection he establishes with his audience is for him a creative conduit. David should ultimately be one of those artists who develops his material in concert and then records, rather than the prevailing reverse route, valued for its higher revenue potential.” Oh YES, I agree, but purely from a perspective of the quality of material David would deliver because of this.

I believe that David is a free spirit and needs to be able to fly on his own, creativity wise (continuing initially with help from those more experienced) and production wise, with his Dad (the reports on the production of Angels and the background of Fallings indicate this). Each successive album will provide him with more of this until is able to find the confidence to do it ALL on his own.

highbervibe-23 “It occurs to me that the over-produced quality of the CD may be a reflection of Jive’s feeling–as did David, apparently–that the songs themselves weren’t all that strong? ” Very interesting point.

Barriers-my addictive moment in that song comes at 3:16 when he lets loose a lick that drives me wild every time I hear it.

To Be With You- when he draws out the phrase, “to feel that wayyyyyyyyyyy”…his voice yearns and moans and you can almost hear him suck in his breath at the end. Heck, I suck in MY breath.

Desperate – his vocals in every part of this song slay me. Down. Dead.

I love every single song differently – I have yet to skip over any of them and heaven help me, but I’m actually getting fond of “Music, on demand”…oh my heck!

I completely agree–To Be With You would be perfect without the 2nd voice.

I find it distracting and think it probably was to promote something besides David’s album. Other agendas at work and part of the AI Faustian bargain perhaps.

David does do “dark” well. He is light YET he understands the Yin to his Yang and when he sings the songs with angst, it is absolutely stunning, chilling, a place of great beauty and soulfulness.

Whether we like it or not, over produced music is what sells today. Jive knows it and is playing the game accordingly. “Radio friendly” has become a genre all it’s own.

With the song variety they’ve cast a pretty large net on this first effort which should garner alot more fans for David.

With more fans comes more power and he could be just the artist to make a huge impact on what “radio friendly” sounds like in the future.

But for now, I am LOVING this CD…every single song! No matter how many ridiculous studio induced elements they add “in”to his songs, they can never take the David “out” of the song. His talent always shines through so beautifully!

One day, hopefully, we will get a live album from him. Others have done it and with a lot less talent.
Rascal, he feeds off his audience, don’t you think?

Re previous thread:
Yesterday we got our shipment in early of the new People mag. with David. (Walgreens) Obama is on the cover.
I am anticipating another shipment of monthly magazines on Tuesday. I believe the new Elle will be out then.

Rascal, I’m so jealous that you seem to have some insider scoop on the album-making process that we don’t…although I have to thank you for the few snippets you have shared with us in your posts…I think we can deduce what was going on.

I wonder if David’s frustration with the album-making process in any way led to the decision to not continue with 19E. After all, they could have had an instrumental role in the type of material David was being allowed to record. I’m so glad they went with Azoff – can you imagine 19E allowing DA to ride on the lead float of the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade? Doubtful…

Thanks Rascal for your eloquent (as usual) words and review.

I was looking forward to a power ballad on this freshman album which I think we can all agree showcases David’s best talent. But as a fan of pop music also, this one will be a winner. Touch my Hands, among others, will create great success for album sales. And, as Josie so succinctly put it, “I just block out some of the ‘overproduction’, and drink in David’s voice.” absolutely, right on Josie! David knew his first album would have to appeal to the masses; the next one will be different, I’m sure.

Is this confirmed? David and Miley on the same lead float? Oh boy! (And, no, LittleMushroom, I don’t think 19E would allow David to be on such a float without Cook in the line-up, I’m sure).

good evening all~~

Josie/28~~heaven help me, but I’m actually getting fond of “Music, on demand”…oh my heck!….ROTFL !! LOL

Hi HG – I read about the float from an article posted at Snarkies, it was an article from Just Jared, a pretty big celebrity gossip blog, not 100% confirmed I guess but the article sounds pretty legit!

Rascal, I agree with you 100%. Over produced and David’s beautiful voice is diluted. Imagine my disappointment (because I pre-ordered the actual CD in July) & surprise (I will now have to purchase the download) when I saw on FOD that Amazon has a downloadable only, Deluxe version available, which has three additional songs on it that are FABULOUS!!! Go to FOD and listen to the snippets they have, of course one of these is Falling which David wrote when he was 14. Cannot BELIEVE these 3 songs did not make the album cut. What the heck??!!!? WHAT were they thinking???

Overproduction is exactly why I adore, “You Can,” on the album. I love that song’s stripped-down organic sound and can’t wait to hear him perform that in concert.

Once the album is released and I can hear the tracks in high quality, I look forward to getting to know the rest of the songs in their different ways on the album, too.

Coming out of lurking again to tell you that I love your review, Rascal. Very insightful – you ‘get’ David, as many of us do. As a fan with ferocious ODD, I’ve been reading all the reviews so far, and am blown away at how poorly researched and written many of them are. Take, for example, a certain reviewer from EW. Did the guy even LISTEN to the album? Makes you wonder…

Regarding To Be With You, you stated, “it should be illegal to pair David’s voice with anyone else’s.” I had to laugh at that, although I do agree. I’m thinking that, in the future, David’s voice and music will be so recognizable that no one will dare sing his songs, at least not seriously, much like AI contestants know that trying to replicate Celine, Christina, Mariah and artists of that calibre is pretty much the kiss of death in the face of the judges…

FINALLY, Rascal! Just had to post just so you know I was waiting with bated breath about your review.

Ok, goes back to reading your review :)

Rascal – I need to hear more about this–> “He got so frustrated with the process at one point that he reportedly wondered aloud how he could consider giving up after God had offered him all this opportunity. ”

Can you tell us more?

debra 5354 # 37 – yep yep! I have a feeling that David’s own stuff is going to be the best of all.

But I have to say, I’m loving his “pride and joy” and see him rocking these baby songs in his arms when I’m listening.

I hear you rascal. It will be great to hear his 2nd CD! His aptitude for growth is phenomenal. His recent interviews have been way different from 6 months ago. One thing about David…for me anyway..I can hear one of his songs 1-2 times and wake up the next morning with it in my head. This is a first for me. What’s that all about?

I think that this review should be e-mailed to every news group out there. (including EW, etc.).

collegemom…the review sent to JIVE could be a good idea as well!

Lots to think about but first:

“He got so frustrated with the process at one point that he reportedly wondered aloud how he could consider giving up after God had offered him all this opportunity. ”

While playing the backward “Paul is dead” to get all the bonus tracks for DA’s album I was reminded that Let it Be got mixed reviews. I am not suggesting that this album is to be compared to Let It Be in any way other than to point out that the production and release of an album is mega complex. Even the Beatles who created a “musical fusion which wiped clean and drew again the face of pop” were at the mercy of producer Phil Spector’s interpretation.

Rolling Stone magazine was critical of Let it Be citing, of all things, over-production as a problem. “In terms of having the judgment to avoid either over-producing yourselves or casting the fate of your … statement to the most notorious of all over-producers, you didn’t…”

hi everyone! OK..maybe I’m still the cra-zeh one here, and at first I was anxious to read all the reviews & critiques about David’s album, especially rascal’s, but I have decided NOT to read any reviews at all. Even with the “over-production” of some of the songs, which may be, but I really don’t know or care really. The point is i can’t find anything wrong with any of the songs..I really can’t. They are all different, “a little bit of this, a little bit of that” just as David described it was gonna be. He says he’s still tryig to find what direction he wants to go..I hope to heck he goes in the “DESPERATE”
direction. It may be “dark”, but it’s also daring.
Also, Barriers & Your Eyes Don’t Lie have the quirkiness that the target group will really like because they ARE quirky. Those types of songs are what’s going to make non-fans really see David through different eyes. I think there are already many people who have listened to the leaked songs who have been surprised and thinking they misjudged him, thinking he was a one dimension singer.
debra5354..you are so right about the new snippets..they sound EVEN better than some of the complete songs we’ve heard!
MsLemonade08..And you are so right about David’s voice being so recognizable that no one WILL BE ABLE to do justice to his songs, but buh-lieve me they will TRY!
After all David is THE VOICE! Well, he’s THE FACE with THE VOICE, now!
About TO BE WITH YOU..beautiful song. The lyrics are about wanting to be with someone you know but haven’t MET yet..someone he wants to have that FIRST LOVE feeling with..that’s what I get from the lyrics. So I can’t see this song being a song played at weddings, etc. Maybe, but that’s not what the song is about. It’s about the hope of being with that special person who doesn’t know yet how you feel and hoping they somehow want the same thing. Am I wrong? Am I hearing something different? Anyway, this song is very beautiful because ofthe way David sings it..It’s THE VOICE again.
I could go on & on about why I love every song for different reasons. I am just so excited and happy for David. His Desiny unfolding!

Hi. Rascal, just back from a trip abroad to find this analytical article on the music industry and touching expression of your feeling for the essence and potentials of David James Archuleta.

I love and agreed with what you wrote, particularly “I like the album. But what I like about it doesn’t necessarily have a whole lot to do with what I love about David Archuleta”. That is exactly how I feel after listening to the snippets of “leaked” songs. What I have listened so far left me a bit disappointed – the background music are too overpowering. I want to hear David’s pure and beautiful voice. Currently on the “leaks” I love ALTNOY, I have yet to listen to “To Be With You” and “Desperate”. I am anxiously looking foward to the CD which will be out in the stores on 17 November in my country.

Thank you Rascal once again for this beautiful article. Hello, friends at Noting David, glad to be back in your company after a break.

“He got so frustrated with the process at one point that he reportedly wondered aloud how he could consider giving up after God had offered him all this opportunity. ”

RASCAL – can you share more on this?

HG – Perhaps there is more to this connectedness thing cos I have been of late been thinking of David’s vocal paralysis and I cannot shake it off. My mind kept going back to that after finale interview with him & Cook with all the reporters in gallery. A couple of things stood out for me there and one was his pragmatic stand on his singing career. That he was still thinking of going to college (much to the surprise of the gallery!) cos altho he wants to sing for the rest of his life, it would be nice but he is not sure whether he could make a living out of it… do you know of any 17yo with that talent and under those circumstances, think that way? By now we know at that point that he was already told he was to work with Jive. Yet there he was… being pragmatic

And I told myself – it’s the paralysis thing. He isn’t sure whether he can do this forever with one vocal cord working and the threat of the paralysis coming back… And I prayed sooooo hard at that time that the Almighty not allow that to happen. Just let him sing please…

So your dream HG, am beside myself to even attempt to interpret it, reminds me to pray specifically again for his voice. We shouldn’t worry — He listens :)

“He got so frustrated with the process at one point that he reportedly wondered aloud how he could consider giving up after God had offered him all this opportunity. ”

…I am very encouraged by that note. It shows that David is thoughtful, and his ability to wrestle with issues, especially as he enters a wider music business and world (esp. with travel, etc.) that’s very complex and often morally gray, will only make his music deeper.

smanda – #41 – it was just one of those moments when you’re at your wit’s end and thinking you should just pack it in, and then you focus on the opportunity more than the difficulty. I think it’s just an interesting indication of how dramatic things got, how David put such a brave and cheerful face on it all, and once again how hard he had to work to get even close to what he wanted. That’s really all I know.

“I think it’s just an interesting indication how dramatic things got, how David put such a brave and cheerful face on it all, and once again how hard he had to work”

I think that’s why he always always stress the fun factor in every interview or blog – even at random times. So people won’t worry about him and I suppose to also remind himself about what this whole journey/adventure should be for him. Kid’s admirable, indeed.

On a lighter note, David with roses anyone?

ps: Have you voted at VH1?

Hi, just read the Saturday papers in The Straits Times in Singapore, I was pleasantly surprised to find a near half page article devoted to David’s up coming CD (quoting Reuters). CRUSH has alot of airplay in the various stations in Singapore. I only listen to radios when I am driving and sometimes I hear it more than once from a station in a day, and I am sure when his CD is released here we will hear more of David on our radio stations. HURRAY!!!

jr..my thoughts on whether David would EVER consider giving up singing..OF COURSE NOT! Even if by some twist of fate, David doesn’t become the big superstar we all KNOW he will be, I can see him still singing, still composing. Singing is like breathing to him. The thing is, we all know he didn’t start out to become a SUPERSTAR, he just wants to share his love of music with whoever wants to listen. Also, we talk about David having only one working vocal cord, but I have heard David say the paralysis went away with therapy and the vocal cord healed. I don’t think he would be able to sing the way he did on the tour if he still had problems with it. The miracle is that he could have given up his dream of singing THEN, but his passion was too great so he persevered and didn’t give up. Lucky for us!
And besides, we already determined on one of the previous threads that I, me, myself & I, would personally go to Utah and kick his cute you know what, if he ever mentions quitting..he’s put us through too much!! haha!

Diana,
I’ve said it before….I believe that David is going to be HUGE in Asia, especially Singapore, Malaysia, China, Japan, and other countries. Just a hunch I have. I think his whole look, demeanor, and style of singing will go over big in Asia. It sounds like he has a growing fanbase in Asian countries already.

Freofan..over at FanBlast4David, there’s a listing of all the fansites dedicated to David from around the world, not just Aisa, but Australia, Turkey, Mexico, all over South America. We, and I do too, talk about David like he’s not yet a huge Star, but he is already. I think it’s the possessiveness in us..we want him for ourselves!
It’s time to say G’nite all..and as usual to..

David, wherever you are tonight, sweet dreams, be safe & secure in our love for you always!
CONTIGO SIEMPRE CON AMOR!

Joner#30/SF#47- I am really enjoying the album too. That’s all I really care about in the end. It is definitely a “pop” album to me and I like it. My husband used to like to say, “It is what it is.” Simple enough, but true enough. Only 1 or 2 songs don’t particularly appeal to me. I think that is an impressive accomplishment for any album. I think it is interesting that many have posted that they too like all but 1 or 2 songs, but its different songs. Love his voice, love him.
I also agree he has a lot of radio hits, which also makes me happy.

Jackryan, that’s as much as I took out of my dream: pray for David’s voice. He is after all singing (and so gloriously) on one vocal chord. I hope everyone around him appreciates how precious he is.

Rascal, your story about his willingness to work through the drama says alot about who David is. Not only will her persevere, but he’s an artist in his own right – why else would he even be frustrated if he didn’t already have a sense of who he is musically?

And here everyone thought he’d be easily manipulated to fit into whatever box others wanted for him!

Oh SILVER – I doubt that David would ever quit singing. We all agree that it his life – his air. And am sure many will go with you to kick his a$$ if in the very remote possibility that he would! After what he put us through right? :) Now THAT would be some scene :)

And you are right about the superstar thing. But am reminded of what Shakespeare once wrote — o HAPPY would be happy about this!

“Some are born GREAT; Others achieve GREATNESS; And to others, GREATNESS is thrusted upon them”

Which do you think is David? :)

I wonder if David will stay with Jive for the long haul…look how Warner is treating Josiah Leming, actually letting him put out a more organic indie type record. Maybe eventually David will need to switch labels to make the sound that he really wants?

JR#59- thanks for the Shakespeare….

good night all. Thanks for the fun.

Awwww! It’s real, guys. I’m feeling very…proud, emotional, breathless…

http://idolforums.com/index.php?showtopic=583513&st=0&gopid=17970568&#entry17970568

I have listened to his songs and I really like them all for different reasons. Of course I have my personal preferences, but we all do which is obvious when you read everyones comments. In fact for a first ablum put together so fast, I am pleasanty surprised at how much I really like it. All you critics, do your critic thing. I know you have your place and importance, but for me it is more simple, do I like it or not? Yep!

It bothers me, if it is true, that he was so troubled about the ablum. He is such a perfectionist that I can only imagine how hard that must be. But I think one of his great qualites is his positive nature.

Right about now, I am feeling very grateful that he has his Dad looking out for him. This machine working aroung David which I am sure has interests that are not always alined with his, has got to be tough some times. He is working in an industry where todays standards just don’t match up to his and that’s just not in music.

This fan loves his music and loves the person he is.

Whatever frustrations, I’m sure David is still proud of the outcome, and he should be!

Anyway guys, I have to wake up early tomorrow morning, so signing off until next time.

G’nite all! :)

I must be some kind of funky older lady because I really like Barriers as well as Your Eyes Don’t Lie. I must have a split personality because I also favor To Be With You and Desperate.

Are older ladies a part of the target audience?

HG- Hey cool, liking that Barriers much?

“David does darkness extremely well.”

Wow. I love that.

Rascal, you went on to describe the “underlying melancholy, symbolized by that cry in his voice; the feeling that in grace lies an awareness of suffering.”

SO well put. This describes the profound emotional pull that his voice has for me. He is coming from a place that understands the joy and the pain.

And on the same topic, I loved what Kizzi added, post #29:
” …he understands the Yin to his Yang and when he sings the songs with angst, it is absolutely stunning, chilling, a place of great beauty and soulfulness.”

Beautifully said.

Hello, bloggers. I’ve been a long-time “lurker” and finally decided to jump into the dialogue. Although I don’t really have much to add, really. I just want you guys to know that I thoroughly enjoy the lively banter that goes on here. I’m sure there are plenty more lurking out there just like me. Matter of fact, I met a few on the way in..right next to the SIGN-IN portal. They said to say “Hi”. (I think they’ll be in as soon as they work up their courage and type their passwords in correctly:) Anyway.. This young man – David – he’s really something isn’t he? Just like so many of you, he has taken control of my life. How does David do that? (HDDDT). There’s an added element to his voice that somehow transcends anything anybody has ever heard before. It’s indescribable. How CAN you define something that doesn’t/didn’t exist?… that is, until David? All this from someone (much) younger than you or I. A young man that is honest, sincere, kind-hearted, caring, giving, modest, etc., etc., etc., And all the while, he seems unaware of how deeply he is affecting the lives of so many people. There is something seraphic going on here. I’m going to enjoy watching the star of David. IMO, it’s at the top.. and going higher.

Rascal, re this: “I think it’s just an interesting indication of how dramatic things got, how David put such a brave and cheerful face on it all, and once again how hard he had to work to get even close to what he wanted.”

Wow- and WHAT a cheerful face he managed, our David. He is my hero, truly.

(PS Give Barriers another chance! I didn’t think I liked it at first but – 0h! lush harmonies with himself? Kind of playful but rich with angst? The cry in his voice on the last verse? Hut hut hut? ha ha. I am just stuck on this one. I love it!)

Alright Angels! Thank you for lighting the fire! ‘Bout 12 hours after the “Call to Arms” at VH1, the icon attached to his name has changed and is now A-FIRE!!! Woo-hoo!!!

Keep it coming Angels and let’s bring him up to his spot at #1 of course when he guests this Saturday :)

Thank you Rascal! You say it so well. I hope Jive does come to the realization of what they really have. I am sure they see the talent but they are so used to working their magic formula that they are overlooking an original.

Josie, I too have become used to “music on demand” and wonder if I will miss her. Joner, right on. David’s voice is what I listen for and I consider all the rest just background. I actually like the harmony on To Be With You-although I like when he harmonizes with himself best. David wanted to make a pop album. That is what Jive does. This is just the beginning for our star. I feel so very fortunate to be enjoying his incredible journey.

“He got so frustated with the process at one point that he reportedly wondered aloud how he could consider giving up after God had offered him all this opportunity.”

Reading tidbits like this make my attempts at sticking to commenting on only his music and artistry useless. As you’ve said, Rascal, he’s more than that. This, and reading the story behind “Falling” reminds me of why I’ve given so much of myself in supporting his career, and him as a person.

Hi np1107. Up a litle bit late, aren’t you, honey?

“This …. reminds me of why I’ve given so much of myself in supporting his career, and him as a person.”

Absolutely.

http://www.dailycal.org/article/103479/album_reviews

“The album cover says a lot about what David Archuleta tries to convey about the singer. He’s mature, yet has baby-like innocence. He’s clean, yet slightly dangerous.”

Dangerous. I love it!

“David Archuleta is going to top the charts and not only because of the masterful way it appeals to young girls. Archuleta is an extremely talented singer with a voice that defies his age, height and personality. From album-opening single “Crush” to the several ballads for which he is revered, every song shows off Archuleta’s flawless clarity and diction. He is successful at tortured-soul whisper-singing, angsty bellowing in an echo chamber and quivering falsetto.”

Well hello there, smanda :]

OK, for the graveyard shifters — saw this was posted by suttygal at FOD and had me LOL! It’s like a sitcom segment:

“I did a major eye roll then promo for David at our local WalMart today! I didn’t see any promo picture or anything of him there. I asked them where their new album releases are placed. Two clerks said “oh we just add them to the shelves alphabetically” I said Sriously? Do you know who’s album is being released on Tues?

The one guy said….oh Are you talking about that (Favorites) cd by Julio Iglesias? I said NOOOOO! IT’s DAVID ARCHULETA and IT’s GOING TO BE HUGE!!

The girl working said “Oh ya, he’s the one who sang “THE TIME OF My LIFE”

UGH!!! I said, No, he didn’t sing that song, but he should have!!….”

Oh my… that was fun.

juliebug, thank you for that photo! It makes me feel proud too! Awww, this is really happening. Goosebumps…

jackryan #49, it always amazes me too that David doesn’t take anything for granted, doesn’t assume everything is going to be great just because he was runner-up and got a recording contract right away. But I never thought of this “pragmatism” to mean he is thinking of the vocal chord paralysis coming back. He knows talented people don’t necessarily end up with a successful career. His idol, Tamyra Gray, being one good example, and there are a whole host of others who got signed, but dropped by their labels a year later or less than a year later in the case of Blake Lewis.

As young as he is, he is wise and keenly aware that even if he were to be successful initially, the music business is fickle and things may not last. To me that is the reason why he says what he says, not the paralysis thing, in my opinion. But I’ll pray anyway for his one vocal chord to remain healthy and strong so he can continue to live his dream and be happy.

rascal, I can’t wait to hear what you think of the remaining tracks. I wonder if the day will come again at some point when arrangers and producers’ mode of operation of “making up for a lack of vocal prowess with production technique” when working with their pop stars, is no longer the only standard procedure, as it really seems to be.

Hi genesis! Glad that you decided to unlurk :) Please post more often. Here, the more, the merrier :) . Classic example is the various options with the album — it was fun figuring out that convoluted distribution scheme. HDDDT? am liking that!!!

vermeer Yes of course you are right. I didn’t mean to imply that the paralysis thing is the only reason why he was being pragmatic. And yes let’s pray for the protection of that one functioning precious vocal cord :) Sneakering now… cos I suddenly remember bodily parts of celebrities being insured… tee-hee

GOOD NEWS: Crush conquers MTV ASIA

After 4 weeks in the chart and entering at #12 spot, Crush finally reached the #1 spot. Woo-hoo!!!!

http://www.mtvasia.com/Onair/Shows/ChartAttack/chart.html

Perfect timing for the album’s release. Yeba!

Although I seem to enter this blog when everyone leaves for the night or moves onto another “thread”. I believe I am the last post on every article so far. Anyway, hopefully someone is still out there. I LOVE this album though not sure about one or two songs. With every listen, I’ve discovered a few constants: love the songs I liked at first; am totally crazy (can’t stop listening and start to bawl when his voice takes over – esp To Be With You) over the songs I loved; am liking songs not sure I would. It’s like getting to know & understand someone.

Also, I feel connected to this blog as many of you are experiencing the same phenomena. I have been drawn into EVERYTHING David Achuleta. Have tried sharing my experience with my family but everyone thinks I’ve gone over the edge. Thus I have turned to this website, mainly as a lurker. You have brought me so much enjoyment just reading everyones comments – esp. silverfox. You always keep it light and real. After all this is entertainment.

“Phenomena – an object (person) known through the senses rather than by thought.” That would be David Archuleta, to me. Don’t know how else to explain what has happened to my life.

You’re not alone, fandaforever48. :)

Nitey nite.

Beebee, fanaforever48 am still here!!!! Am in the office – pretending to work while typing this :)

Hey guys! Wanna hang out w/DJ Race Taylor @ the PLJ Studios?

Wednesday afternoon (11/12/08), American Idol’s David Archuleta is coming to the ‘PLJ Studios for a one-on-one interview with Race Taylor! … And you can be there!

Just listen to Race from 3p-7p to win your way into ‘PLJ to hang with David Archuleta during the interview. Get your picture taken with him and get an autographed copy of his new self titled CD.

Interesting to see some of the professional reviews that are starting to come in. Many of them lump David’s songs together and say they sound similar, which perplexed me because I thought there was an amazing diversity to the album.

Then I realized that maybe they’re reacting to the production, which gave some songs a similar vibe and, by overlaying his voice, made them seem less distinct from each other, particularly the midtempo pop ballads.

Because what’s remarkable in the album is David’s vocal versatility – just compare how he sings “Desperate” with it’s power notes, anguish, and vibrato, to the smooth ringingly clear tones of “You Can.” Then compare both of those to the attitudy licks he adds in “Your Eyes Don’t Lie.” And then there’s the rich notes in his lower register during the verses in TMH, Barriers, and Don’t Let Go, and the bendy “British” sounding vocal in TMH. Then there’s the slick, rhythmically tight R&B singing in the verse to ALTNOY.

Another thing I liked upon re-listening is the last 30 seconds to “My Hands.” It’s a multiple David chorus! All the melodies and harmonies melding together, almost Beach Boysy. Would love to hear what that would sound like without the background music, acappella. I could listen to Multiple Davids sing to me all day! ^_^

Oh, whoops – I think not all of them are Davids, but several are! Still! LOL

Thanks for your review Rascal. It helped me gain courage ( trying to
say anything the least bit critical at some fan sites, not this one; is akin to stepping into a lion’s den covered in said hamburger. lol) to say that I’m waiting for David’s second album more so than this one and you hit the reason with your comment of :
“Would I have recognized what I now understand to be the virtues of a once-in-a-generation performer from this collection alone? Not likely. David’s voice, with its enormous nuance and subtlety, is given somewhat short shrift in this collection.”
David has such musical skill, that it just blows me away. And some of these songs just don’t do David justice. I know I’ve got to keep in mind that this album was somewhat rushed and Jive would not allow someone so new to the business too much rein. In fact its rather surprising how much freedom Jive has given David. And this album is an exploratory venture, with David trying out different sounds to see which ones work for him. So, while I impatiently wait for the delivery of my CDs, I’ll try to be patient for the delivery of David’s second album. B)

Welcome genesis, I’m glad you jumped in! Its always great meeting another fan of David Archuleta.

Two more things I’d like to mention- I’m so looking forward to hearing the full version of the song “Falling”. After hearing the little snippet of the song, and reading the heartbreaking story behind it. I also read how Jeff and the guys at the studio, worked extra long and hard on this song to make it right, because this song was David’s.

Vote VH1! David will be on the show this Saturday. Wouldn’t it be cool if he got to introduce the #1 video and it turns out to be “Crush”?! :D

jackryan4DA -thanks for the invite. Like every opportunity thus far, I’m in the wrong place at the right time. I was back east when he was on the west coast & on the west coast when he was back east – oh so frustrating. I’m on the west coast – Washington state. Since I have no support from my family flying out east would be out of the question. Can only wish.

Thanks for acknowledging me, beebee & jackryan4DA. Now I can go to 97.1 & listen to David before I call it a night.

np1107 #71, that great write-up is from my school paper (Berkeley)!! I’m gonna make sure to get multiple copies tomorrow and save em LOL

Good morning all! Just checking in before heading out for the day. Good to see lurkers de-lurking. Welcome genesis!

I hope to post my review soon. Anyway, I’m not surprised this album is receiving mixed reviews. It’s very evident that Jive is packaging him for “pure pop,” which isn’t exactly the kind of genre that allows pure vocals to soar and, more importantly, slay. But David manages on more than a few songs, so kudos to this very vocal prowess we love so much.

Checking back later. Until next time! :)

This review represents the risk involved in a “proving strategy” that David can be a contemporary pop performer on radio-ready material designed for the market closest to his age bracket. It’s a perfectly decent and even thoughtful (as far as it goes) review, but because the reviewer doesn’t “get” David to begin with, this collection is not creating that connection for her. Consequently, nothing truly special is coming through or being discovered.

On the plus side, I recall that this reviewer was pretty awful to David during the AI season. Her review here might be counted as a big win compared to where she was before.

Ronaldsf, I love your post! I wonder if that’s why there’s such a difference in the reactions between fans and ‘nonfans.’ Yesterday was a tough day in the Archuleta fan internet world, and it left me feeling blue. As I listened to David’s entire CD before falling asleep (because I can’t listen to just one or two of the songs, apparently) I heard for the first time some of that overproduction, and realized that before I’d just tuned it out to hear the VOICE. I liked the songs less that way, and quickly returned to my previous behavior.

Apologies. I was referring to Ronald’s post 83, above.

rascal – that was a good review from Joan Anderman.

She also says “…Happily, in a genre where the urge is to err on the side of overwrought, someone smart decided to stick with tasteful, understated production. Archuleta’s delivery is likewise low-key and attractive, if predictably generic. We do get a glimpse of previously unheard heft and depth…”

She thinks the songs are underproduced – LOL – she thinks David is “smart” (although she probably doesn’t know that she paid that compliment directly to him) and she thinks we get a glimpse of “previously unheard heft and depth” again – LOL. to the “previously unheard” statement.

All-in-All, this is a very positive review – she recognizes something special, unique in this debut CD even though she can’t define definitively what that is she does try – Woot!

http://www.nytimes.com/2008/11/10/arts/music/10choi.html?_r=4&partner=rssnyt&emc=rss&oref=slogin&oref=slogin&oref=slogin&oref=slogin

This review was dated yesterday. I didn’t see it posted here.

Interesting perspective. Seems reviewers are intrigued by his many facets, contrasting facets, and are giving props when they think they have hit upon what is unique/intriguing about David (the man) and his music (the art). Now they just need to see the Elle head shot of David–that is what we see visually when we see David – “The Man and His Art”

And re: the NYTimes review I posted in #93, Soundscene a highly, respected IDF poster commented on this review as follows:

“What he says about innocence in pop being boldness is quite true. Half of the things Archie is dealing with right now as far as credibility is concerned is the fact that he is who he is–unapologetically gracious and good. Sweet in the way that makes more cynical folks confused. And that comes across in the songs. See, he used the person but tied it back to the music, rather than using the person as a means to ignore, disregard or dismiss the music.”

Read the album review again Rascal. There is much there to assimilate. I too am looking forward to your review of each song but do wait until the album is out. Reading all of these comments is making my self-imposed David Album fast rather difficult. I still remember my reaction as I listened to Crush for the first time. I was blown away.

David is an amazing performer. I can’t wait until I have the opportunity to see him perform live as in person not recording. I actually would also love to watch him record. People who collobarated with him were very impressed by his professionalism. I guess the truth is I love to watch David sing. I love listening also but his face..his beautiful face just adds dimension to the voice.

I hope Jive will stop interfering with genius. They may know the market but they just do not truly understand the bomb(per Randy) they have in their midst.

Dropped by FB and learned that someone from Singapore has got hold of David’s CD at around 3pm (your 3am) on Nov 10 (today)! Immediately called the stores and they confirmed that it is already selling here. So excited, will be there to grab hold of few copies first thing tomorrow morning when they open at 11am. They told me it should be selling in the US on the same day, ie. 10 November!

rascal -a “tantalizing” glimpse, Desperate –YES!!! That song grabbed me from the first listen. Maybe because i am from the over 50 set but this song is the one that I play multiple times. Could this be because it shows the mature side of a 17 year old, with uber talent that is so amazing to phathom? We need more like this.

Kizzi — The Times review is great, and the Times matters. Surely David himself will like this one. It is mostly accurate, IMO.

“…he just smiles in wistful acknowledgment of the eternal mystery of everything”

True in part. More so for those who are observing rather than obsessing. “Desperate” remains the exception to all the sweetness-and-light assumptions.

“He can only trust good omens and kind eyes.”

Again, true in part. Although it may be true that he can only trust these optimistic symbols, it is most assuredly not the case that he only understands such symbols.

In a way, the Times review makes my review’s point: We all know that David runs much deeper than what this album portrays.

“She thinks the songs are underproduced – LOL

Kizzi LOL here too. To re-phrase an old expression, isn’t it interesting that what is goose for others is gander for some? Haha

But yeah, Joan Anderman was nasty to David during AI days.

And isn’t it interesting that most of these reviewers who slammed David for being a 1-trick pony/boring crooner are actually liking the slower/mid-tempo & ballad tracks in the album. Go figure!

rascal – Yes, Yes, Yes….”David runs much deeper than what this album portrays.” That is the essence of my reaction.

Also, I am so very taken with your comment….”more so for those who are observing rather than obsessing.” In fact, that is what is at odds within me–my observer tells me the facts, my “obsessor” tell me what my soul intuits. You always balance the objective with the subjective in your commentary which aids me to balance those two halves of the whole picture. Thank you, rascal, that has unlocked some keys and a great big “Aha” moment in this fan journey I am on. Thank you, thank you, thank you.

hi jr4da: I am laughing at Anderman’s comments and isn’t it great that she didn’t allow her AI posture to completely overshadow her album review–at least she did some work to review the album from a refreshed stance.

Today Show – just a few minutes ago showed a clip of the Crush video and Anne said David the much “loved” American Idol would be on the show tomorrow. Al Roker was movin’ and groovin’ to the music.

Wow, I am thumbing through the Times now and found that review. A very nice review!

I think the Ny Times review is the best so far. I’ve even saved it for future reference, a couple of years from now, when we’ll be able to look back and remember those who ‘got’ him. I love this album and I’m not looking forward to his next one. Don’t get me wrong. I hope there’ll be many more. But right now I’m so happy for Crush, Barriers, TBWY, My hands and all the other songs. I can’t wait for my holidays in December and January. It’s summer in Brazil and I’ll be blasting these songs by the beach. LOL! I feel grateful and I’m happy to leave the nitpicking for the critics. David is awesome!

This is the famous Roses picture that Jenny posted on FOD.

What is it about those Roses and David? Is it the compelling comparison with the juxtaposition of an ancient symbol of love and beauty with David?

Hey everyone! I have a long break at work right now, so I took the time to post my review on my blog (Rascal, I acknowledge that I wrote it partly in response to yours):

It is fascinating to read all of these contradictory reviews. I have to admit, I got a little frustrated myself last night, as some of these reviewers don’t appear to have ears, but I had to keep reminding myself that I rarely read reviews before buying music, and that these are subjective articles. I was very happy to see the New York TImes review though… this guy seems to get David, and as Rascal said, the Times “matter” while a lot of these other reviewers don’t.

I am definitely one of those that are “obsessed.” There’s an observer lurking behind the obsession, but for now, the ODD wins out! I can’t wait till tonight… I’m assuming that I will be able to download at 9PM or so, since I’m on the west coast, and last time, with Crush, I was able to download it well before midnight! So much excitement for us Original Archies!

morning…
Thank you rascal for your review.

“an underlying melancholy, symbolized by that cry in his voice; the feeling that in grace lies an awareness of suffering.”
This is what I hear in David’s voice, and his ablitiy to connect me to my own feelings. I still am in awe of him.. And thankful for the insights (and fun ) and links and love here.

HG — apologies for the link situation, I implemented new spam controls because the blog was getting inundated (on older posts) and I am still trying to work out the balance between what the filter allows and what it doesn’t.

HG, loved your thoughtful review! I’m with you, I LOVE Barriers, my current favorite… though of course, that does seem to change from day to day… it depends on my mood.

And, I love your site… a lot of fascinating commentary on what’s going on in our country right now.

Hey people! I gotta say I’m loving reading all the reviews (which are about 95% positive) about ‘the album.’ It’s pretty gratifying to read comments like “a triumph” and “brilliance” coming from those supposedly ‘in the know’ as far as the music industry goes. With the exception of one crabby-ass Boston Herald reviewer, even the negative-ish reviews kinda ended up positive. As far as my review (like it matters), I’m really loving the whole CD (Shock and Awe). I agree with you Josie #28 (another Shock), that I also love every song differently, at different times/moods etc. Like momofteens my current favorite (@ 9:46am) is ‘Barriers,’ but ask me again around noon.

My latest post a couple of hours ago got lost. Hi, folks, just to informed you that David’s CD has already been selling in Singapore from today. I happened to dropped by FB and a fellow Singaporean posted (with proof) that she had already bought her copy. I immediately called two stores here and they confirmed that they are already selling it, and they reckoned it is already selling in the US. These store people seems to be very familiar with David Archuleta and one even told me to come down quick! I will go down tomorrow as soon as they open at 11am to grab a few copies, yapeeeee!!!

Hello Gorgeous…you are a georgeous writer!!!! I loved your review about the album. My favorites songs are Barriers (although at first it wasn’t) LOL, Desperate, A Little Too Not Over You, To Make You Love Me, and of course…Crush. Desperate and Barriers are the ones that really stand out to me and that I love the most.

Momsofteens and InspiredbyDavid (there’s a song called “To Make You Love Me”? ha ha), thanks for your positive feedback. The diverse reviews are interesting, to say the least, so I had to add my voice in there. ;)

Trying to catch up after a weekend away and need to take more time with your post, Rascal. But wanted to mention the thing that impresses me most about this CD — how it showcases David’s stellar taste in music.

Strip away the overproduction and, outside of a Greatest Hits album, I can’t ever remember liking so many songs on one record.

As a recording newbie, David clearly didn’t have the final say in the studio or even on which songs were selected for the album, but he must have been the one to decide which songs he wanted to sing.

And what a fantastic lineup of songs they are. Considering song choice was something he was slammed for during AI (even when it was beyond his control), he seems to be making a statement here: “I’m more than just a balladeer, so don’t pigeonhole me. I love today’s music and let me show you why.” And he does, doesn’t he? :)

For those who cannot access youtube from work, here is a downloadable link:

“So David, you still have your screaming fans, the girls that love you, all those stuff?”

His reaction — PRICELESS.

Here is another interview with Chicago Fox News & it also has its own Oh-boy moment :)

Love all of the short interviews. David is SO charming.

HelloGorgeous, I loved your review and noticed that when I did a Google search a while ago, that one popped up first!

Uploaded his interviews with the Chicago Fox News & PA Fox43:

Another Fox interview. A little different, he is more animated and answers a question about doing a duet w/Cook at the end.

ok gUYS,

I went on my lunch hour and got my mail from the P.O. My Wal-Mart CD was in the there!!!!!!

I’ve listened to “Works For Me”. Squeee!

I LURVE it so much!

Gah!

Forgive the typos. At work, on my work computer, the text entry box is a dark brown. I can’t see!!!!!

Mr. Rascal, I always enjoy your writing. I totally agree with your review.

David has mentioned many times that he wants to send messsages to people through his songs, therefore, lyrics are important to him in choosing his songs.

I like the way he changed the lyrics in Desperate. It made the song more positive.

I like this song when I heard the version sung by Stanfour from Germany when it first came out. I am glad David picked this song to sang.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nCLaDdcH-x8

David’s latest video blog. He seems fatigued in these videos I have seen today.

I just love that he is who he is; his incredibly beautiful vulnerability is truly a shield of courage. An oxymoron I know, yet, it is his vulnerability that conveys great strength, pure bravery, awesome courage!

Kizzi – You could almost feel his heart race when he said the album comes out tomorrow! He wears his heart on his sleeve!

Oh, to be that sleeve…

Joner – LOL – you have given me a new goal: To be the sleeve for a day on the shirt of David Archuleta! “Not a bad place to be, is it?”

lol… FOD urges you to look at the YouTube vblog TAGS that david put on his video–they are seemingly random but actually are in alpha order– (you hafta piece them together)… so cute what a hoot. Here they are:

“and Archuleta at blogging Break concert David Matt Method Nathanson New Repair Suck The York”

god i love david…lol (and his sucky vblogs! LOVE THEM!)

It was good to read your opinion Rascal. I think at this site we are all advocates for David and want nothing but the best for him now and in the future. I sometimes look at this part of his journey as his internship when he will perform songs and venues that may not be what his long term plans are, however along the way will earn many hearts and experience that will help him down the road as he refines his singing career. Even David knows, at his tender age, that insight and understanding of this business are essential for those who want to take the high road in life. David’s commitment to his art will take him to where he wants to be on this long and winding road. David holds the golden keys to integrity of heart, faithfulness and reliability of character. He faces each day with grand passion and unrelenting optimism. So until his internship is on to the next stage, he has all my support, love and encouragement. David does run so deep, however, they are starting him in the shallow end of the pool.

Kait, I’d be curious to know what you typed in for your Google search to yield my review!

HG – great review. I love Barriers too and, as I’ve mentioned before, still keep going back to With You. That’s why I’m surprised you call My Hands “generic.” Couldn’t be less so for me. Although it’s a very different song than Shop Around (with a more sophisticated melody and lyrics), it grabbed me just as hard.

I feel a powerful jolt, an electric charge from My Hands and I HAVE to listen and feel it and move to it over and over the way I did that first time with SA. This won’t be everyone’s experience, of course, but I’m loving that it’s mine.

HG – I missed a full day of posts, but mention of your dream (dream? did someone say “dream”?!) sent me back to Saturday’s string…. I choose to read the vocal chord dysfunction (in your dream) as symbolic of not having his voice fully heard for this album. Given the frustration/upset that rascal reported in his review, this could be an accurate expression of how David feels about the process, if not the actual final product. That way I don’t feel so sad (that *was* a sad one), but will say a prayer for David’s vocal well-being anyway!

(oh, just seeing that you’re review is posted now… off to read that…)

TOfan! :) As you know, it’s MY experience, too. I jez LOVE “My Hands”. I love Barriers, and Your Eyes Don’t Lie, and ALTLNOY and Running… and You Can and To Be With You.. and… LOL… well… but I really really do love My Hands. :)

HG, speaking of really really… I really really appreciated your thoughtful, articulate review! You’re the best. ♥

#121/Juliebug – woohoo, you’re the first to get it!!! so happy for you. Mine is coming in the mail too, not a P.O.Box though, no mail delivery tomorrow, right? so I guess I’ll have to wait till wed. but. then, there’s always Itunes, which I’m hoping i’ll get either late tonight, or tomorrow!

Been watching the different press videos and David’s latest vlog, he looks sooo tired. I hope he’s getting enough rest; I’m worried about him. What a trooper he is though, never complaining, always ready for the next venture. so rare are you David. how we adore you.

My Wal-Mart CD should be arriving tomorrow morning! I will home from work tomorrow (crazy story in itself), so I can’t wait to unwrap and listen!

I love David’s vlog…watching him speak in his way… he is so honestly himself…it is a delight to witness. He is so lovely. I just couldn’t stop smiling as I watched and even now this goofy grin is plastered on my face. He is just the sweetest thing I have ever witnessed…. it is almost too much to bare. WOW!!
I must say again well, just because… that I love Barriers…the more I listen the more I love that song.. his voice is unreal !

lol… sheesh… my ODD time is a little constrained right now… rascal I REALLY appreciated (but failed to mention it…d’oh!) your overall commentary and review of DAVID ARCHULETA. It resonates with how I feel about the industry and David’s ability to prevail in spite of it. I just hope there’s a little secret place in your heart that is just going unabashedly bonkers with happiness for him over this album and how perfectly is SHINES and OUT shines in the context (pop top forty) it was designed to compete with, and be “relevant” within. IMO, an out’n'out *Triumph*. I hope his own satisfaction with this “oeuvre” outweighs any frustrations he may have endured. David Archuleta has a whole freakin’ LOT to be proud of with this debut album.

HelloGorgeous, It was a blog search. I just typed in David’s name and went to blogs and it was first (at the time.) Since I’d just read your review, your easily identifiable blog name jumped right out at me.

I am watching David right now chatting on Z100. What a busy, busy day and next few days he has. The fans are asking me many of the typical questions, but also some new ones.

direct link to the live video stream: :)

http://zzone.z100.com/whtz.DavidZ100

it’s official from david’s lips……….TMH is the new single, what do you think?

I had a few extra minutes on my lunch hour today, so stopped by Barnes & Nobel to see if they might have David’s CD yet ~ THEY DID! But, unfortunately, they wouldn’t sell it to me until tomorrow at 9 a.m.!!!! GRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR!!!!

Hi everybody, I’m back from Mickey’s land and happy to report Minnie has not washed the side of her face where DA kissed her. In fact, that side has a special glow to it. haha

Sagittarius #24, To be with You ‘It is a ballad that will become an anthem to so many. It will become a theme song to many lovers. It can be a theme song, soundtrack to a romantic love story movie’
Can’t agree with you more.
I also feel the same about You can. I think it will make a beautiful wedding song as well. I can’t have enough of them. I think thery are sublime, beautifully done, heartfelt, connecting… These are by far my two favorite ones.

Hm. I mostly agree with you. My thoughts:

I’m in love with “To Be With You.” I just… love it.

I can’t stand “Don’t Let Go” because his voice is unrecognizable.

He sounds pretty sexy on the bride of “Barriers.”

I’m a bit stressed right now, so that’s all I’ve got for now.

Almost forgot: what’s with all the loony comments on the album review articles? They are JUST opinions. Going on there and saying “David Archuleta is the messiah of pop music” just sounds delusional. Angry and annoying fans won’t change any body’s opinions- only David can do that. Seriously- the crazy hateful comment spamming on negative articles needs to stop. It’s really claymate-like-not a good look.

juliebug #62, thank you for posting that link. All I can say is: Aahhhhhhh!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The whole album is on Rhapsody now

Panamom ~ those are my 2 favorites too (You Can & To Be With You). Of course, I love several others too, and My Hands & Barriers are really growing on me. Still working on Desperate ~ it’s just not my style, but it’s David and anything he sings so … it’s only a matter of time!

welcome Genesis and Jackryan, that is some great news from Asia.

Sorry …
“anything he sings, I LOVE, so … it’s only a matter of time!

Okay, the Rhapsody versions sound unbelievable. So much better than the leaked tracks.

And I am praying. Yes, praying.

I am praying that someday we can get a version of “To Be With You” without that inane chick vocal (is that the new AI judge? Is that the one she did?) and without those insanely syrupy violins. Ugh!!

His voice is so magnificent on this one and then they hack it up! Good god, isn’t anyone listening to this boy?!?!?

I thought he sounded a bit tired and hesitant in the interviews however I remember how the off site interviews go even for the news people. It is like the sound is delayed or something and they have to almost guess what is being said.

Can you imagine the emotional high he is on? What a rush…. 11/11 is almost upon us. I am so excited and hoping my mailbox will have a surprise awaiting me. I know I will have the download.

HG, your review is fantastic. I was so amazed how quickly you put together allthingsdavid but seeing your blog site-you are one amazing person. You do know that yours is one of the blog choices on the 1st page when you google David Archuleta don’t you?

Not sure if this has been posted. A nice review from Newsday. No need to spam. :)
http://www.newsday.com/entertainment/music/ny-etdrops5921076nov11a,0,166977.story

oh rascal – rhapsody has blocked the download. I was soooo excited! Have to wait 6 hrs and 41 mins to download – sheesh

“To Be With You” has the new AI judge singing. YUCK! Talk about exploitation.

Boy, this back to work after vacation really cuts into my blogging time. BooHoo. I had so much fun last week blogging so much! Hey, chickee and djb- Tennis anyone!

Rascal, Kizzi, TOfan, np1107, JR – I wanted to thank you and everyone for all of the review links. They are really fun to read. I don’t search the web for anything David. If it’s not linked here, I don’t get to it — just a time management thing. So I really appreciate you all spending hours sifting through and reading everything and then posting the best things here. It’s like I have a staff of personal assistants!! Thanks, really!

JesseQ-111, genesis-67, dma-70, fandaforever48-79, cutter12-85- hike! jk.
I loved your comments.

HG- thanks for your review!!

So fun to have all the new lurkers posting!!!!! :)

You do know that yours is one of the blog choices on the 1st page when you google David Archuleta don’t you?

dma, actually, no I didn’t know! This really is news to me. At least Kait prepared me.

Nice that Newsday is on board, along with the Times. Really, the more mainstream critics are on board, so who cares about the rest? (as for our young Archies – sigh. Well, at least they’re prepared to defend him to the end!)

Tofan #151 ~ gotta run, I’m still at work ~ but had to thank you for that link! Now that’s what I love to read! Good articles about that Angel!

And I finally found out that the Elle Magazine with David & the Idols in it is the December issue ~ and here I’ve been looking all over town! Also so the pictures online on the Elle Magazine site ~ including one of Syesha I hadn’t seen yet. I’m a little surprised they didn’t do more than one of David Cook! What do they have against him, I wonder?

Sorry ~ also “saw” the pictures online …

well, Happy, waiting on you to lob your first serve!!

oh, wait, I have to make dinner first. see ‘ya later….

Okay, you guys are making me totally jealous!!! I vowed that I would not listen to anymore of the songs from David’s CD until I bought my first physical copy, which as it turns out, will not be until Tue. a.m. at 9:00!!! GRRRRR!!!!!!! But so many of you have listened to the whole beautiful experience and I feel so left out!!!! I will just have to listen to David all day tomorrow to make up for lost time. I’m glad he’s been receiving many positive reviews, but I think it’s the opinions of his fans that will matter to David the most!!!

highervibe, thanks for your interpretation of my dream. Just so you know, I didn’t take it as literally as worrying that David would experience vocal paralysis, so the idea that it was representative of something else (like his voice being list in the production process or dismissed in some of these reviews) makes sense.

Of course, I too am praying that David takes very good care of that one vocal chord. :)

OK…I’m finally home! Ack! I posted during my lunch hour and work. Then my computer crashed and when I came back I’d lost my log in stuff and I didn’t have it written down at work. Argh! So frustrating!

Anywho…

Works for Me is soooooo good! I can’t believe it. I don’t know how to describe it except its a feel good song FULL of his falsetto. Oh boy! I can’t quit playing it!

You guys are gonna love it I think. And it’s pretty simple – accoustic! Not mucked up at all…at least I don’t think so. Some background singers.

I can’t wait until you hear it! And I can’t wait for the other songs later tonight!

Sorry for all the !!!!!!! – But I’m excited!!!! LOL!!!!!!!

I stopped by home at lunch today in high hopes that the CD from Wal-Mart might have been delivered a day early because they said it was “shipped” on Saturday.

It wasn’t on my doorstep :(

Probably a good thing. If the UPS guy showed up with it I probably would have thrown myself on him and given him a big smooch! Hey, brown is not my favorite color, but if he’s carrying David’s CD, I could change my tune.

AWWWWWWWW…..Pics of David I-flying are on Snarkies!! I don’t see any slobber, but he looks like he’s having a ton of fun. SOOOOOOOO cute!!

anyone listening to the tribute to DA on FHR? Link is on FOD

I tried posting the link but it wasn’t accepted

From this chat at Z100:

‘If he could be any animal, he would be a cat so he could explore’

Now I love him even more!

chickee163- I think valbraz172 just lobbed you one…… :)

Today has been unreal! And tomorrow will be AWESOME! I can hardly stand myself! haha! I can’t sit still long enough to post anything. I’m lurking at every David fansite I can find! I can almost feel the ELECTRICITY jump out of my laptop! The anticipation is so high, it’s unbelievable! And since K-mart is offering a poster of David with the CD, I guess I’ll have to buy it there too. I think it’ll look good on my dining room wall!! Haha!
Anyway, I’ve enjoyed being a “lurker” today and right now I’m listening to the Tribute on FHR. And I’m OFF tomorrow..It’s a HOLIDAY in Archuworld!!
So I will say g’nite to all here early so I can continue lurking and basking in all the Archulove everywhere! and to our darling..

David, tomorrow is the first of many milestones you will have in your career! So If you are able to sleep tonite, may you have the sweetest of dreams! Be safe & secure in our love always! CONTIGO SIEMPRE CON AMOR!

Good review Rascal.

Lots of great radio songs and some songs destined to be interactive live audience faves. And I love a ton of them. But I think the album could have been ever better with less overproduction and more time. Wasn’t this CD recorded in about 6 weeks not counting a few days here and there during the tour and minus whatever else he had to do in those 6 weeks including songwriting? I think the more David sings something, and the more open and simple the arrangement is, the more David shines (especially his intensity and his soulful side). Most of the album songs are pretty tight boxes (musically and rhythmically) – as far as improvisation is concerned, not much room to stretch one’s wings.

But hey – lots of cool songs. My personal favorites so far are My Hands, Barriers, Running, Desperate. I am denying myself most of the rest until tomorrow (I’ve been waiting so long for the 11th so I still want a big treat then).

Joner, “Hey, brown is not my favorite color, but if he’s carrying David’s CD, I could change my tune.” ROTFL And yes those iFly pics are adorable!!

Joner#168/thanks for the link to I-fly pics. so happy to see David having some FUN.

Hey Happy, the ball is in YOUR court now. Care to take some flying lessons? hahaha

Just listened to the Z100 live blog. Classic David moments: He likes You Can because, “The magic is in the simplicity.” sigh

And the last time he remembers voting on AI?: “This season … [laughs]… I voted for Cook.” hahahahahaha

Hey David’s album went poof from the iTunes chart…what’s up with that???

Does anyone have a link to “Works for Me”?

I just realized why I like “Barriers” so much….

It reminds me of David’s tour performance of “Apologize”!

Anybody else see similarities there too???

Can’t believe it, rang up one of the bigger store I called yesterday before I go down town to get David’s CDs and was told that all David CDs with postal are sold and remainders are on reserve. I have to wait for them to call me when the next shipment arrives and may or may not with postal. *sigh*, didn’t expect David to be so popular here in Singapore. Only myself to blame for being so slow and stilling suffering from the hangover of recent trip abroad.

I just found this at the American Idol Forum – it is adorable!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ICynCnHCliY

BeeBee #141 David Archuleta has a whole freakin’ LOT to be proud of with this debut album.

I feel the same way I am so happy for him.

Rascal i could totally feel your excited over the Rhapsody versions. You excitement adds to mine. thanks for sharing!

If anyone’s around, the iTunes downloads are ready. Mine is downloading as I type!

archiesfan4life 182- just checked in before bed, and was met with one last treat!! Thanks, LOVE IT. (now THAT’s the way to produce a song for a great, great singer!!)

chickee 177- we’ll play tomorrow….

omg, omg, just got an email from itunes, it’s ready to download, here we go……….woohoo

Kait 184 – thanks!!!! so excited!!!!!!!!!! mine too, thanks to you!

hi happy, i’m sooo happy!!!!!!! Goodnight, and sweetest of dreams to you!!

omfreaking_g. I just downloaded my iTunes Deluxe… first new song I’m listening to… “Somebody Out There”… O. M. G. Passss the Defibbbbbbbbb……. *THUD!*

Please don’t download until midnight Eastern! It won’t count for David’s first day sales! You’ve waited this long….

I don’t understand why it won’t count?? I already dowloaded and then read all these weird posts saying not to download…why would iTunes send out the email then? I’m confuzzled :[

I hope that’s not true Juliebug. (is all I can say.)

That’s what I’ve been told. But iTunes sent out the emails. So who knows. I’m playing it safe and waiting.

Okay, beebee, have you listened to Falling yet? wow, this song is pure David, isn’t it? Reminded me of his interpretation of “Crazy.”

This is such a personal song…while David may have been inspired by a tragic family event, I can’t help but think he also channels his feelings as he was going through his vocal paralysis. Especially the lyric about “trapped inside this box” or something to that effect…have to listen again….

Have you listened to it yet?

Let Me Go is great…really hooky, hip, why didn’t this one make the main album??? (only complaint: quite similar to Burnin Up by JB)

OMG…”Somebody Out There” is beautiful! Oh man, I’m feeling sorry for David that Jive wouldn’t let him put some of these songs on his album…no wonder he was so frustrated :[

oh no juliebug, are you sure? I’m crushed that it won’t count. I just downloaded the whole thing!!! does anyone know if this is confirmed?

oh shroom…. I can’t even articulate yet. I’m in archu_blissninny heaven.

yeah, I know…I’m mesmerized, stupefied!!!

GAH, his vocal on Let Me Go is killing me!!!

Is he really only 17!?!?!?!??!

A very happy good night all. Thanks for the fun.

paddles please………thud.

juliebug – I already downloaded – oh, I hope that’s not true.

I am listening as I type – Somebody Out There – O.M.G.!!!!!!

well anyway…………i popped on here to say i’ve listened to 3 already, and so far You Can is killer, soft guitar, no overproduction here, David’s voice is clear and the song builds nicely, “if you ask me I will followaaaaah” love the aaah sounds at the end of certain phrases – David, you know how to start a song mellow and then brilliantly build the emotional intensity. love it love it. puulllease pass the tissues on this one. crying with joy, i’m so happy, I ache.

I’m listening to the new songs. OHMIGOSH!!! “Somebody out there” is faboulous, hip, and David’s voice is uncluttered. Oh happy day!

To be honest, I like all of the bonus songs better than a couple of the songs on the main album. they are all GREAT!!! (of course, I love the main album too, but still…..)

why JIVE why????!??!??!

#194LittleMushroom, just listened to Falling. GAH!!! if this isn’t a power ballad, then there certainly are some power notes on here that David really nailed. this is hauntingly beautiful, sung with incredible feeling. Oh Happy Day indeed davidfanLIZ.

Good Bye~ “Music on Demand Lady ! “…………

HELLLOOOO Mr Archuleta !!!!!!!

chickee, I’m listening to Falling right now. My first impresssion is that these bonus tracks will be my favorites.

chickee~ yeahhhhhhhh!!!!!

“I’m stuck inside this pain!”

djb, HEY!!!

I agree Chickeeee!!!

Falling is a TOUR DE FORCE

and I love all the other bonus tracks too!

I’m feeling p*ssed at Jive – no wonder David was so frustrated with them – these bonus songs are fantastic!

I wanna be there when your in neeeeeddd !!!

Goodies from FOD Chat w/ Jeff Archluleta — aka jazzman on FOD chats (apparently still ongoing, but seems to have slowed down a little)

http://www.coveritlive.com/index2.php?option=com_altcaster&task=viewaltcast&altcast_code=773b4ab8a7&width=470&height=550

jazzman: Not sure yet about specficis for Jingle Ball concerts, but I will let someone know once we know.

jazzman: No new songs until the Jingle Balls, just Crush for the live TV shows at this point…

jazzman: 4 songs for Jingle Balls, possibly a 5th at a few venues. It will all depend on the time they allow us.

jazzman: We had to negotiate and compromise on the songs. We did have a difference of perspective on things, but they tried really hard to be fair. The main thing we didn’t get that we wanted was to switch works for me with YEDL as it seemed to fit better from our perspective. They are the experts though and have a great track record. I fought based on my gut feeling and felt I was right, but at least they did listen and did let us have a LOT Of input on songs. I personally was able to have input on at least half of the songs and had a lot of creative and production input including vocal production input as to ideas and nuances.

jazzman: Can you guys do a poll on FOD as to the 4 or 5 songs you guys would like to hear for Jingle Balls?

jazzman: DAvid will be singing on TRL but to a track. Band for Today show, track for TRL. Not enough time to setup the band for TRL.

jazzman: The band is great!! Very experienced group of guys, have played with all kinds of great people including Jason Mraz, Avril Lavigne, Nick Lachey, Kelly Clarkson, Clay, etc…

jazzman: TMH is most likely the next single, probably 3-4 weeks away still.

Jazzman: ALTNOY is a cool song, I really like it. I worked on the bridge and the vocals in the bridge as it wasn’t as complete as it is now. I felt it needed more of a lift going into the bridge so I added an extra bar and made it a bigger moment as a result and also added the ad lib licks leading into the bridge and the falsetto lick. Falsetto on TBWY also. I like working on the licks for David as I know his voice better than the producers and know what he is capable of. Sometimes they go for easy licks that just don’t deliver the same level of emotion that David is capable of conveying with better note and lick choices.

jazzman: You can is one that I really liked but also wanted it to have a few more little things in it. I added the one note higher on “You” can the 2nd and last times. Felt it added more of a lift.

jazzman: AFter album promotion, there will be 12-18 performances and appearances before Christmas. Then a week off with the family, finally!!

jazzman: Running is one of my faves as well, love the chord progression…

jazzman: Desperate is a good song, I just preferred some other ones for the album. Wasn’t one of my picks.

jazzman: Desperate is David in a few years maybe, but I dindn’t feel it was really him right now IMHO. I”m glad a lot of people like it though… The label felt strongly about it.

jazzman: I”m not sure what Lupe’s fave is.

Questions:
Jeff – will David ever consider recording Don’t Tell Me?

Did David really write falling when he was 14?

Answers:
jazzman: No on Don’t Tell Me, Yes on Falling when he was 14.

Q:
Jeff, how much is David onto the top 20 at VH1?
A:
jazzman: Don’t quite understand the top 20 at VH1 part. What do you mean?

jazzman: We had a big meeting tonight with the Sony excecs. I sat next to Barry, the president of Sony. We had a great chat about the future and I can say that there are 1 or 2 albums that we will be working on for next year, one being a probably Christmas album. We are also looking at doing some Spanish versions of songs from the current album. All very exciting news!! The label is very positive about things.

jazzman: I had nothing to do with YEDL.

Is somebody out theeerre..Somebody somewhere…..

“My Hands” makes the album but Falling does not? (I know alot of people like My Hands, but when you compare it to the bonus tracks…idk it makes you see things differently you know?)

Okay, now I’m getting suspicious…I’m guessing some of these writing/production teams had contracts that made it more fiscally desirable for Jive to include TWO or more songs from each team….

hence, we have CRUSH, MY HANDS and TO BE WITH YOU
TOUCH MY HAND and BARRIERS
YOU CAN and YOUR EYES DON’T LIE

…thus really limiting what else could go on the album….not that I dont like those songs, but would have loved more of the other Davidy songs too..

GAHHH!!!!

jazzman: I wanted Falling instead of Desperate and so did D.

interesting!

Also, Somebody out there is my new fave!!!

Thank gawd i can’t choose faves….lol (that would just kill me). I LOVE THIS ALBUM! We need a big honkin’ Champagne Party to TOAST the AWESOMENESS’o'DAVID ARCHULETA!! (Those who prefer sparkling apple cider, go right ahead… it works, too!)

Should Jeff really be sharing all this insider info? I imagine David might feel uncomfortable if one of the reporters asks him about some of this stuff in his appearances this week…

I agree with him and D about Desperate, BTW, but what if the songwriters heard this? Desmond Child is a big force in the industry.

beebee: I raise my glass to David! Bravo!

After my post #.181.I rushed down to my neighbourhood CD store to try my luck and end up teaching the store owner how to do business just because he did not have stock of David’s CDs. When waiting at the traffic lights on the way home suddenly realised that I had spelled “poster” as “postal” in my last post. I was so upset with not getting the CDs as planned that I just could not function and think.

To quote someone in the earlier post: HDDDI? How could a level-headed senior citizen behave in such a irrational manner. First pre-ordered 3 copies of the CD from Amazon.com, could not wait for the paid items which they advised would arrive in December. Ascertained that the CD would hit the local stores on 17 Nov and started counting the days. Then found a week earlier that it had already hit the local stores. Spent the whole night fidgeting in bed planning to get her copies first thing in the morning, then was disappointed that the store has nearly sold out their existing stock. Reserved 3 copies, possibly buy more if free posters are given. Could not wait for another day, rushed down to neighbourhood stores in a wet weather. Its craaaaaaazy!!!

Yet I find it is worthwhile and happy doing all this for (for myself rather) AN AMAZING YOUNG MAN whom I have never met, who has given me hours and hours of pleasure, listening and viewing his videos.

Oh, while posting this, I got a call, my reserved copies are in, yapeeeeee, I am leaving now to collect them. What an exciting day!!

David, you deserves all the adoration from your fans around the world.

lol… Diana… lolololol!!! Gooooo Getttttttttt the CD!!

::::raising glass to the AMAZING DAVID ARCHULETA:::::

David, you have so MUCH to be proud of! You have done us all SO PROUD!!!!!!!!!!!

Yeah beebee, it’s awesome. What a shame Jive wouldnt let David make the album he wanted.

he didn’t need to use all those songwriters and producers!! Look what he came up with on his own – his own style! ugh. I’m a little annoyed with JIVE

beebee – email me

ooops…. hahaha!

juliebug@kc.rr.com

ruh roh… juliebug, i feel like i’m being called to the principal’s office…lol… i don’t know your email. (DO I?)

look up! hahaha!

juliebug… i sent you an e… … a very lengthy and in-depth email… MINUTES AGO….

Did you get my reply?

My rainbow has been pissed-on! I called my local Wal-Mart at 9:30 p.m. As nice as I could, I asked if they had David’s CD, and if they knew what time it would be on the shelves? The person put me on hold then connected me to the music department. I was then told, yes they had it and it should be out by 1 AM. Imagine my excitement thinking I was this close to David’s VOICE and extra track I haven’t heard yet. ALAS…when I got there, the lady (not very nice, mind you), said there was NO MUSIC at all “in the back” to stock. I, kindly told her I had called and what I was told. She still insisted there was NO new CD releases! She then said, ” I’ll call my Manager, see what he says.” First he told her that he didn’t see anything back there but, as soon as he could he would go back and check. My husband and I walked around to do a little shopping. That even didn’t go well. We needed HBA . Needless to say, that area of the store was blocked off! I was starting to get really frustrated with the whole Wal-Mart experience. The parking lot was filthy, filled with trash and carts everywhere. I pushed all that aside still praying the Manager would find Davids’ CD for me. After about 40 min. we went back to the music area. Manager guy comes out of the back with what looks like a “New Release’ CD rack! I let out a little yelp! (thought my husband was going to climb under a rack of movies)! The box was opened by the guy, and then he walked away to let US go through it. ALL of the other New Releases of every other artist due out today was in there EXCEPT FOR DAVID ARCHULETA!!! Argh, I felt my heart go to the floor. I tracked down the unfriendly, unhelpful Manager and asked if there was a different delivery. Oh, yeah he says probably later today around 10a.m.! Wasted trip, couldn’t even get friggin’ toothpaste! On a good note…my wonderful husband will go back there around 10a.m. for me… I will be watching the Today Show! P.S. I quit smoking November 11, 2007!!!!!!!!

Sorry, meant to add after 31 years of smoking!

archangel48 I feel your pain!!!

Oh well I’m off to bed .. night guys!

JB…. just emailed you back !

archangel48… HOW DID YOU DO IT?? (the quit smoking thing)

And your story sounds…lol… like a walmart nightmare… thank goodness for you NICE HUBBY! :)

night Shroom! Sweet DA Dreams!

Night all. My head is full of new DA songs! Happiness!

beebee – I sent you another email.

night beebee :-)

Ahhhh… beebee, the quit smoking thing was a very personal thing between me and my Marlboro Reds. We weaned ourselves from each other slowly and very quietly. NOBODY knew I was quitting. I didn’t need the flack if I couldn’t do it. I kept reminding myself of all the things I had been through, or accomplished. ie. Raised 3 great kids, maintained a household, maintained their Fathers happiness, and maintained a successful Restaurant Manager career! I began to question my strength while comparing my life experiences to the power of the cigarette. I realized I was bigger than the cigarette, better than the cigarette, and I WAS GOING TO WIN! It’s been a year…I’m still quitting. I haven’t had not 1 cigarette and I believe I never will, that is why I still tell myself I am still quitting. Definately one of the toughest things I ever did. P.S. November 11, Veterans Day. My husband is a Disabled American Vet.

aww… archangel48 {{{{hug}}} you’re my HERO! :) You inspire me.

lol…shroom… go to bed

Got home late to a lucky surprise ! ! ! Whoot!
It downloaded itself. Listening…
*FALLING ! ! ! !*
Ohhhhh my. THERE’s David!!! You can hear him. It’s simple. It’s lovely. It’s sweet. Tears.
“Somebody Out There” too.
Still listening….

HG – Are you just channeling David?! Did you catch this lyric (re: your latest dream), in “Works for Me”?
“There were days when a song could not be found,
There were days when my voice would make no sound…”
Maybe you’re picking up *his* anxiety.

Does anyone else’s album version of the Crush video suck BIG time? The visual just *stops* about 45 sec. before the end of the song. GRRR.

Highervibe – Mine is fine. You are using iTunes? Do you need to upgrade?

juliebug – Yes it’s iTunes, and I did upgrade (it was actually better before the upgrade). Dunno. Will have to investigate. Thanks, now I know it’s my own system.

Chickee on #234 Oh you must have missed my post 2 threads ago (I think). I have been listening to the real deal for 2 days now, except for the bonus tracks… That was when I responded to pouncer’s SOS for more donors for the Gifting Campaign & informed him of my discovery of a torrent on DA’s album – the real tracks. I was actually surprised nobody picked up on that; even told rascal at one point that I am all smiles after hearing the real tracks as our concern re the over production may be not all over the place as initially feared.

You see I had a little self-assigned mission monitoring the illegal download activities re DA’s album — I wanted to see how the Gifting Campaign is impacting this underground industry. I coordinated my findings with TeamArchie & FOD and at one point last night, alerted Snarkies about a review they posted that has a link to an illegal download of the whole album. This led to the closure of said thread. You may be glad to know that the Gifting Campaign works! :)

Now that I have the deluxe edition, the only song I have not heard is Works For Me — which is so ironic cos that ain’t working for me of course!

Having said that, I can understand why Falling & Waiting For Yesterday didn’t make the cut for the debut album… But Somebody Out There? Let Me Go? JIVE come on!

BTW, that doesn’t mean I didn’t like Falling or WFY, ok? In fact, I have a personal attachment to Falling esp after learning its back story… with my being a widow… it is too close to home, so to speak.

ANW, is the album a HOOT or what? My goodness, I cannot for the life of me, imagine where David will take us 2-3 years from now. As jazzman said, the Jive execs are upbeat. the future looks bright for The Archuleta and as an Archie, it is all that matters for now (still dancing to Don’t Let Go :) )

have to go home now… but I have Works For Me already yay! Will listen to it when I get home :)

Good Morning All:

“Somebody Out There” is vintage David – now this is what I’m talkin’ ’bout! Can you image him singing this live?!! And it doesn’t even make the album, just a pre-order iTunes bonus. So, quite obviously with my sense of priorities in David’s music, I am not the target audience for this album–LOL–ummm, duh Kizzi. Someday everyone will get that it is all about the VOICE!

Love the extra tracks, great debut album. He is getting good reviews overall by the media.

Did you see Joe Levy’s Blender Mag vlog (he is the editor and been in music industry for years) at FOD? Nice props for David!! Actually his comments on David’s video are quite relevant in societal context.

jr4da: Thanks for the torrent info and that the gifting program works. I saw some sites carry the torrent downloads over the weekend too. I guess the silver lining is that there was enough demand for David’s album pre-release that the illegal downloads happened.

The Grammy Awards

A baby grand piano.

A spotlight on David Archuleta.

Singing “Falling”.

*thud*

These bonus tracks are killing me!

I am impatiently awaiting my Wal-Mart UPS delivery.

Why does a chubby man in brown shorts and socks with hairy legs suddenly seem so appealing to me?

OMG David, look what you’ve done to me…

http://www.snarkyarchies.com/2008/11/lyrics-falling.html

Lyrics to “Falling”

I am very taken with the chorus:

“I try to chase the memories away
But they haunt me everyday
I hope I get over this phase
‘Cause I’m stuck inside this haze
All I need is a simple lift
Such a sweet and precious gift
So I don’t lose it all before
What I have left is nothing more”

I know he wrote this because of a tragedy experienced by the relative of a relative; however, he was experiencing his vocal paralysis at the same time and these lyrics speak to loss and despair and the need for hope. Simple, poignant, deeply touching–Whew!

Snarky’s has the lyrics to all the extra tracks if interested.

Hi guys! Thanks to everyone that welcomed me to this forum for David. And thank you Rascal for providing this great place to hang out.

Well it’s David’s BIG DAY! I’m so excited for him. He’s has got to be up in the clouds somewhere today. Rascal, I hope you don’t mind if I post this. It’s been bugging me how most of the interviews with David seem to rehash the same old tired questions. I sense that David feels the same way. And with the release of his first CD, more interviews are most certainly on the way.

Since his management team doesn’t appear willing to give David any suggestions on how to respond to them, I offer the following:

INTERVIEWER: So, David… with a gazillion screaming fans, most of them girls between 4 and 11 years old, there must be someone in your life… are you dating?

DAVID: Umm.. actually, dating isn’t a huge priority right now. I wouldn’t be sitting here today if it was. I’ve got to stay focused on my MUSIC. But to be honest with you, I actually receive more marriage proposals from women 50 and over. Did you know this age group has one of the highest disposable incomes in the world? You should be playing my music non-stop… starting with “Desperate” soon as we’re done with this interview. Hah hah!

INTERVIEWER: During American Idol, your father was accused of being a “stage dad” and deprived you from drinking water. Any truth to that?

DAVID: That’s a big falsetto! I love my Dad, he’s a great guy. After all he’s my first male groupie! Hah, hah!

INTERVIEWER: Whose CD will sell better? Yours or David Cooks’, your old nemesis from AI?

DAVID: Hah, hah.. Cooks a great guy, I love the heck out of him. He’s been like a big brother to me, not a memnasis…nemnasis? Whatever! Hah! So anyway, I’m going to support him, just like I did during the AI finale… The 12 MILLION CD’s I pre-ordered ought to do it… Tee Hee.

Good morning all! Oh what a beautiful, delightful, glorious, happy morning!

It’s D-Day! It’s V-Day! I’m so excited. First thing I did when waking up was rush to my i-tunes! ha ha! It feels like an early Christmas! :D

If last Tuesday sent me over the moon, today promises to take me BEYOND THE INFINITE:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NhtmFifPq9s&feature=related

Oh the places David takes me!

Will be back after listening to all the tracks and after catching up with the wee-morning discussion from last night.

I’ve just redeemed my gifted digital album from iTunes and I’m so grateful to TeamArchie. This is the 3rd gift I get from them. All I’ve been able to help with so far is contribute to the StandUp to Cancer campaign, as they take my international credit card. I don’t think many artists have such conscientious fans. Arch angels FTW!

Hope this is a great day for our kid!

Today show NBC David 8:30 am That is all :)

Abrra

David will be on Today at 8:30 et. Al told one of the screaming teens whose birthday is today that he’d see if he could get David to sing Happy Birthday to her. It looks like it is freezing there.

I’m loving the bonus tracks! Especially “Waiting for Yesterday” and “Falling.” Sigh.

What I don’t understand is why they couldn’t have been included on the regular CD. 14 or 15 tracks is no big deal, I think.

I disagree with Jeff that “Desperate” should have been omitted to make room for one of the bonus tracks. In fact, I’m going to cut him some slack on his view of the song as “too mature” for David because he’s a dad, and like most parents, they are the last to recognize when their babies are all grown up. I personally would have knocked off “My Hands” myself (I’m sorry TOfan, I know you love this track, but I’m just not feeling it! Maybe, now that I have the deluxe album, which I’ll be playing on a regular loop, it will grow on me – as I’m now learning to like “Don’t Let Go”).

Anyway, what irks me about the bonus tracks only being available on itunes is that David won’t make much $$ from itunes as he would with the physical CD, and I think it’s pretty shabby of Jive to treat the songs that best reflect David in this manner. I mean, I would actually argue that these bonus tracks are SUPERIOR in production to some of the tracks on the standard CD, so what’s up with that? All the more reason for all of us to buy a physical CD, even if you have the itunes downloads.

Just goes to show David is way ahead of the curve of the folks who are currently on the music scene. I see some powerful people clipping his wings, for fear of how powerful he would be a few years from now, maybe. As if that’s going to keep David down. Were they not watching AI like the rest of us? Haven’t they learned that you can’t keep him down?

Please! At any rate, this album has now whetted my appetite for what’s coming in David’s future. Forget a “David Unplugged” album. I want “David Unleashed”! :)

Anyway, I agree with whoever upthread said Jeff needs to be more careful with his criticisms being made public. It’s great he’s championing his son, but he needs to tone it down. In many ways, I see where David gets his very open, no-filter rambling from, but I do believe David is much smarter than his dad because he keeps his gripes to himself (maybe he gets this trait from Lupe).

Oh yes! Today Show! *Goes offline to watch TV.*

Hey can someone help me with downloading on iTunes? I pre-ordered my cd and on iTunes when I try to download, it says…purchase of the item is not currently available…item being modified try again later. Does anyone know what I should do to get my copy?

Yes ~ he’ll be on in about 10 more minutes! Lots of screaming and signs from FOD outside ~ I guess that’s where David will sing? I hope this time he has a good warm jacket! And I wonder if he’ll sing anything new from the album! Can’t wait!

Was it Josie who apologized for the exclamation marks? I use them all the David, ’cause I stay excited about David! That VOICE! It’s simply AMAZING! You’re right, Kizzi ~ it’s the VOICE!

Hurray for David! :)

Oops! I use them all the TIME ~ is what I meant to say! :)

Inspired by David – go to the “Store” tab and click on “Check for Purchases” and then follow directions and then your pre-order should download. The other info comes up if you click on his album and you follow the directions to download the rest of the album.

I was the first customer into Walmart this morning. I am the proud owner of David’s first CD. Feels like Christmas morning. This CD is just so precious – it’s David’s, what else can I say.

Hi Heart }}}}}}}waves{{{{{{{{

Help I am dieing here…need to download the album!! Help, help, help, tee hee!

Kizzi thanks…now its says two of the songs will not download….YIKES!!! I wonder why?

Hi Kizzi & All ~ HAPPY DAVID ARCHULETA DAY!!!
Right after David sings, I’ll be headed out, first to Barnes & Noble for my first CD purchase, then picks up a couple of friends, then on to Walmart for second purchase. Also have more purchases coming in by UPS, but not sure if they’ll deliver on the holiday, so I’m not taking ANY chances!

Just saw David in his leater jacket, signing autographs!!!
YAY DAVID!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :)

Inspired – iTunes is mega busy this morning. I am gifting and periodically I get locked out because iTunes is busy! I hope it is mostly David downloads that is making it busy :)

Squueeeeeeeeellllllllllllll…..David on Today Show! LOL!!

KIzzy – I hope there are so many downloads it crashes iTunes..ha ha ha that would be so funny!!!

I am going later today to my local Wal-Mart to buy the cd.

Those bonus tracks are a gold mine.

As usual, Today Show is waiting ’til the very last minute to let David sing, dangit! Don’t they know there are millions of fans WAITING (and not so patiently!!!)

Today Show – what a rush. Great job David. Changed it up some. Backup singing is different from Tonight Show. Music still too loud in spots. Loved the leather jacket, a la Elle.

olemr2001-I have not listened to the bonus tracks yet…a gold mine? Sounds good to me lol!

GAH! Wasn’t David hot looking in that leather jacket! Oh my! :)

Oh dear! The baggy eyes are back – get some sleep tomorrow, sweetie! (What’s the schedule like for the rest of the week?)

InspiredbyDavid, if you already preordered the cd, check your itunes Library – you should find the files there.

Awww…David is still outside signing things for the fans…THATS OUR DAVID!! GIVING HIS ALL TO THE FANS!!

Crush performance from NBC Today Show:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ynoyj3b00nk

David looked great on the Today Show!!! I didn’t think he seemed nervous. I know that nerves will get easier as he gets more experiences like Leno and Today Show. He looked good in the jacket and shirt.

HG, your comment: Anyway, I agree with whoever upthread said Jeff needs to be more careful with his criticisms being made public. It’s great he’s championing his son, but he needs to tone it down. In many ways, I see where David gets his very open, no-filter rambling from, but I do believe David is much smarter than his dad because he keeps his gripes to himself (maybe he gets this trait from Lupe).

—I agree very much so. In his excitement and passion, Jeff can be a little too open with fans at times about inside info and opinions. I agree that David is good at filtering himself.

From the sites, I am hearing that fans overwhelmingly love the bonus tracks. I am wondering if Jive’s strategy was to build up a fanbase with a pop CD (particularly among teen audiences) and then move more in the direction of the bonus tracks with the second album. What do you all think?

Happy David Archuleta Day everybody!!!!

HG: I’m with you! I look forward to David Unleashed!

Joner #282, love the fantasy, but for me, the song would be “Somebody Out There.” Oh my….

I checked on iTunes standings and didn’t see David’s album on the iTunes charts. Do you expect it to move up through the day?

Good morning! This is me transmitting from the outer reaches of space, way beyond the moon, beyond the stars…where David took me last night with his complete album…The view from here is GLORIUS! The music I hear is like no other I have heard. It’s not just the music, it’s THE VOICE!! That’s it! It’s THE VOICE!! I am flying high with David’s VOICE all around me. Are we there yet?
YES.. finally! David delivered more than he promised!
I am so proud to be an ARCHANGEL!
Just saw David perform on TODAY. He was awesome, looks great! But am concerned when he had to clear his throat after he sang..always worried about David getting sick! It’s so cold in NY and he’s outside with the throngs of people wearing what looks like a light jacket..

Dear Lord, I am unworthy to ask, but I am asking anyway, please Take Care Of Our Earth Angel, David.
Watch over him, protect him from all harm.
Cloak him with your love and give him the strength to endure all that thrown in his path. Give him the courage and guidance to say No to those who ask for more than he can reasonably give. Surround him with loving and supportive people who love him as we, his ARCHANGELS do. Seperate him from those who have agendas other than for his well being. Give him rest when he needs it and stamina when he feels fatigue.
Give him assurance when he feels doubt. Give him joy when he feels sad. Cloak him always in your protective
arms. Keep him healthy and strong so that he can continue to fulfill the Destiny that was written in his Book of Life before he was born.
This I, though unworthy, humbly pray. Amen.

Now I’m off to Walmart to get a physical copy, then Kmart for another copy to get the poster! Have a great ARCHUHOLIDAY everyone! Happiness all around!

siverfoxe, you are making me cry. I say AMEN to your prayer. I send you love!

SF, AMEN!!!!!

amen SF

amen!

i finally got my itunes download and now it will not play on my computer. I am trying to burn it on a cd to play in the car and it shows the names of the songs, but when I try to play them, they will not play…hmmm…something up with itunes or my computer one! UGHHH….having a fit here!!

SF – loved your prayer – it is beautiful!

archangel48 – #262 congrats on your success!

Joner #283 – I am still laughing at your description of the UPS driver:)

The bar at the top of iTunes shows the name and length of the song, but when I try to play the songs its like I have been charged for them and it shows the names but the sound was not downloaded….so mad now. When I burned the cd the names were showed and said the cd was complete, but when I try to play it on windows media player no names show up. The songs are not there. Does anyone have an idea what may be going on? Thanks so much.

SF – perfection. Thanks for that beginning to this long awaited day.

Now I’m off to make my David rounds!

DANG IT!! I figured out whats wrong!! It my itunes…everything else is working…the sound on computer and everything else… so must be itunes. I can’t get the songs or the bonus tracks…:( :( crying here boo hoo!!

What a party!! I just scanned all the blogs and it is unbelievable!. You can feel the happiness through the screen, It is a great day in Archuletaland indeed.

happy, beebee, joner, you are archunuts.

hello gorgeous, ‘But, you hear him struggling and ascending on the song so that it’s his voice that guides the melody and the harmony. And the irony of the “echo” is that it merely reinforces the vocal master that David is on the song. Take that, Machine’

I will add, take that, all of you nonbelievers!!!
Great review!! You made me listen to Barriers again. You can and TBWY are still my favoritas though. What’s not to like about anyways.
Keep having a great day.
I wonder how David must be feeling right now. Remember his face when he first listened to Crush on the radio. I wonder. Gooooo David

Silverfox: AMEN

silverfox~ simply beautiful…Amen

oh, by the way silverfoxe….that was no “light jacket” that was BLACK LEATHER honey !!…Gaahhhh!!

Inspired by David – I had a problem like this last night (and BARKED at my poor son who was only trying to help!) I solved it by signing into my itunes account and following their prompts which got me into a place where I could click download. So then it did download (listening now!) but still won’t sync onto my i-pod properly so that is my next issue to solve.

I know that is probably no help. I just want to say I feel your pain acutely!

off to WalMart..not waiting another minute for the guy in brown to deliver THE MAN in Black Leather !!

I slept next to my computer after my download and let it play all night. It filled my head and my dreams(well if I could remember them). I woke up this morning all smiles and happiness-my conscious and subconscious was filled with the Voice. What a fortunate woman I am.

Did my voting this morning as I did one more run through the album and some Pilates and then off to work. I am so mad at local Walmart. I will take the ordered copy which I should get tomorrow but will buy extra album at our local bookstore who even had David’s album in their ad. This is hip hop, Western and mariachi country so our Walmart didn’t realize there was a demand. Why am I not surprised.

Genesis, I love your interview responses. Funny!!! I guess what bothers me about those same tired old questions is the interviewer didn’t do their homework enough to know what has already been asked ad nauseam and look for a new slant. Where is intelligence in the media anymore???

SF-amen to your prayer. I don’t want the world to take away David’s true belief in the goodness of mankind.

What an exciting day. I wish I could be home to enjoy it fully but will be checking in when I can for Archieworld excitement.

I can’t quit listening to “Falling” and “Somebody Out There”. I honestly think they saved the best for last.

Oh, and that poster that you get from K-Mart with the CD purchase….Guh!! That was my favorite pose from the photo shoot video! My life is now complete! :)

And David’s Dad referring to TWO more albums next year!!! My heart is bursting! ♥I am in Archubliss!♥

I love the bonus tracks, too!! Now that I am listening to the album in its entirely in high quality, I really like it. There’s a couple songs that aren’t my style, but overall I am really enjoying it. I adore “You Can,” “To Be With You,” “Waiting for Yesterday,” “Don’t Let Go,” and I agree with Jeff that the chord progressions on “Running” are very cool.

Thanks silverfox. I loved your prayer and am taking it and using it for my son, minus the archangels reference. (Hope you don’t mind, don’t think you will, though.) Today is David’s day but it is also Veterans Day and people need to remember that!
I am praying so hard for my son… so thanks for the most beautiful thought.

Knock…knock…knock….

Rascal, are you alive????

Those bonus tracks must have given you something to SQUEE about, right??

Sorry everyone, didn’t mean to inject any kind of downer into this wonderful day.
I am glad David sang indoors this morning on the Today show. Stay warm David!

I can’t believe how excited I was going into WalMart and seeing David’s CDs on the rack. Oh my. Unfortunately, the bonus track was NOT on there, grrrrr. But hearing that VOICE made everything right with the world once again. :)

Here’s a funny new Vulture story:
http://nymag.com/daily/entertainment/2008/11/david_archuleta_vs_taylor_swif.html

Hi Rascal!
Hi everyone!
Despite the solemness of the day – weather-wise in Fl. It’s a BEAUTIFUL day. I received my songs from i-tunes last night and fell asleep serenaded by David. What an awesome, magnificent gift given to us this year. David’s voice is literally the best thing out there. He really can sing anything!
Drove by a Walmart late last night, but they said the new music vendor should be in tomorrow, as someone said earlier – Grrrrr – lol!
Wanted to hear Works for Me really bad so I YTubed it. OMG!!!! forget – ALTNOY – (well not really), But WFM is an absolutely delightful song. It is funky, upbeat and I can hear shades of Michael Jackson in David’s use of his falsetto. I really feel THIS should be his 2nd single, but that’s just me.
Caught Dav on Today – he looked like a mega-star with his body-hugging leather jacket and sounded wayyyy much better than he did on Leno. I believe his voice is now adjusting to the notes and as they say in singing – he’s beginning to “sing it into his voice”.
Have a good day everyone until later!

David’s album is #4 on top selling albums on iTunes!

Kizzi, that’s fabulous news! Is it climbing? I haven’t checked.

So, although I said I wouldn’t (buy David’s CD at WAL-MART’S that is), I did. *Says to self: The things I do for David.*

Haven’t listened to the “Works for Me” bonus track yet, since I had to head to work right after, but I’m so looking forward to that treat when I get home later.

My Goodness! I have to tell ‘ya – when I saw his CD there in the store on the shelf with the other music CDs, I wanted to scream out with joy and pride, but I suppressed it. I also suppressed the urge to kiss his CD cover (having seen it so long in digital format, to have the actual CD and picture in my hand was something wonderful). I waited until I got into my car of course. :)

Anyway, the best thing about today, after purchasing the physical CD is that, heading out to Walmart’s forced me to pass by an independent bookstore I haven’t frequented in quite some time. So, when I went in, what was waiting for me there but Toni Morrison’s new novel, A Mercy! OMG! OMG! OMG! The other purchase I was highly anticipating! I bought the book right then and there.

I’m positively giddy! And, yes, as disconnected as Toni Morrison and David Archuleta sound together, I will be reading her new book while listening to David’s music. ha ha!

So, take that, you silly little music critics! For whatever reason, they seem too quick to dismiss the depth of someone like David.

Now, is it just me, or is anyone else completely bewildered by some of the reviews (even positive ones) that have described his album as “teen pop” with songs for “holding hands”? I’m sorry, but are we listening to the same album here?

I don’t know about the rest of you, but when I listen to this CD, I’m hearing angst, pain, sadness, longing, earnestness, and, yes, hope. Not exactly “teen pop” music to my ears. Whatever!

Gosh, I really hate when grown-ups treat youngsters so condescendingly. I hope I’ve never responded to any of my students’ creative efforts in the same way. Many are a year or 2 older than David, so I know what it is to treat their work with respect. Can’t say I find that a prevalent attitude in our culture.

“Let Me Go” –WHOA, I missed it earlier this AM – where did this come from? This is funky, unusual—so, of course, I LOVE it!

“round, round, and round we go…and when it stops you say you don’t know”

Kizzi/343 ~ I am right there with you on…”round, round, and round we go…and when it stops you say you don’t know”….. how can you resist bouncing and bopping to that!!!

HG – I think people do treat young people with a dismissive attitude, in general. I’ve seen it over and over again–with my own children, with my grandchildren, with groups of teens I’ve chaperoned over the years. If they don’t act like a “perfect adult” they aren’t, in general, taken seriously.

David’s depth and his ability to connect to the song and his talent continue to be overlooked by those who don’t scratch below the surface of a cute 17 year old teen who sings. It is obvious that Jive is marketing to tweens/teens, not to us. So I think reviewers see him as a tween/teen popstar. I was at Walmarts earlier today and the plethora of teen mags with David mentioned, his photo included is overwhelmingl. Emphasized to me that he is indeed, being marketed to tweens/teens primarily and I am only an after thought, a footnote, as a secondary audience, but not that important–except I do believe David put some songs on his debut CD for the more mature fans.

Is that age related? and coupled with his humbleness (LA Times described his humbleness as pathological but in a good way-lol),his kindness, his balance and strength, most don’t get past that image? IDK for sure but I think so! One thing I do know for sure, I am glad I GET it.

djb – no resistance at all! I bopping with ya’ this afternoon.

Actually it is a good dance song and hubby and I have been trying out some different steps to his various songs. From slow to go-go, all has been a blast today as we try different, sometimes ancient dance moves-LOL.

Silverfox, Amen!

I too went to sleep listening to David’s cd all through the night. It’s a wonderful cd, the bonus tracks are great, don’t know if I would want to boot anything off the main cd, but they are incredible nontheless. Grabbed Snarky’s Works for Me, and it’s so damn good. David has made a cd of which he can, and should be proud.
I know I am. It’s one of the best cd’s from an American Idol, period. I have purchased many of them, but only Soulful (ruben), and Breakaway (kelly) still get multiple plays on my ipod.

Sorry folks I’ve been doing 18 hour days but I just wanted to add that the bonus tracks are AMAZING!!!

Particularly the David-penned tracks. They really are “David” gems.

“Somebody Out There” is my favorite. His best vocal on the album. And the lyrics are the most “real” and honest out of the love ballad lyrics. For someone as spiritual as David is, it is interesting that his love song idealizes love the least and is the simplest, most honest, and most grounded. The full high notes, and the falsetto, are so sweet and tender. Reminds me of me Extreme’s “More Than Words” and Eric Clapton’s “Change the World” – I really really think this could be a hit. Do a re-release Jive!!

Kizzi~ I have to admit I don’t think I have stopped bopping since first hearing it last night !!…

ahhh! What a feeelingg!!!

hey ronaldsf ~~we have missed you !!
I think Somebody Out There better check on ‘happy’…she may need our help..paddles and all ! !

Just popping in to say OMGah! :)

I am so blown away by this album. Words fail me. The bonus tracks are… omg.

HG, I canNOT wait for you to hear “Works For Me”

SF {{hugg}} O HAPPY DAY!!

LIZ Crank up that volume for “Let Me Go” and shake yer l’il boo-TAY! :)

Josie ? Wherefore art thou? *THUD!* ♥

YEAH!!!!!!

David has a new MY SPACE PAGE!!

Way to go JIVE!!!

http://www.myspace.com/davidarchuleta

Hey everybody!!! What a wonderful day it is, now that all of our waiting is over!!!! I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE this CD!!!! Of course that really goes without saying amongst us die-hard fans!!! I cannot go into great detail at the moment due to time constraints, but “To Be With You” is probably the most beautiful love song I have ever heard!!!!! It completely moved me to totally gushing , gushing tears!!!!! I’ve only heard the full CD through once so far, but that will change as time permits!

Thanks for the heads up on the myspace page, Joner. Very cool and fitting!! Maybe a teen/tween pop star but a serious one – not all shiny, smiley and chipper. Is this perhaps a sign of things to come? *fingers crossed

Snarky’s has been tracking (did I mention I love Amy) a Houston station who has been playing “Your Eyes Don’t Lie” pre-release – clck on link and LOOK as listeners are voting and have it beating out some pretty popular singers. :)

http://104krbe.com/krbe_onair/face_off/new_music.asp

One thing I do know for sure, I am glad I GET it.

Yes, Kizzi, I’m very glad I get it too! As do many of us here.

Beebee, I too can’t wait to hear “Works for Me.”

Finally, a Myspace page that looks – dare I say it? – PROFESSIONAL! Go Jive!

OK, now off to teach some classes.

Until next time. :)

(Sorry for this repost, Rascal — I accidentally posted it in the prior thread. That Elle photo is just too magnetic!)

What a beautiful day!! The bonus tracks are unbelievable. WFY — anyone know what note he hits at 1:30 on “go”?? LMG — I’m archubopping in my seat. Falling — I’m pretty much handing over my heart to David right now. Oh, who am I kidding, I did that a long time ago. (SF, hugs to you) SOT — I mentioned the producer, babyface, on another thread. This is so babyface-esque. A tender, acoustic ballad that shows off his higher register. Just beautiful. The only thing that would complete my day is to get the WalMart version. Delivery tomorrow, dangit!

Has anyone been able to read his liner notes without tears welling up in your eyes?

ronaldsf: I knew I liked Cal!!! :] (whispering so my cardinal-blooded bro-in-law doesn’t hear me) So did you have any influence on that review? :]

kizzi: Great LA Times article.

SF: Amen to that beautiful prayer.

Beebee and TOfan: Did you hear them play our fave song on the Today Show before his intro??

Joner: new MySpace layout (yesssss…finally!)

awestruck#352 (from previous thread): I felt your post. I’m not really as eloquent as everyone else here, but just wanted to let you know I’m “listening” to you. Keep listening, friend. As David has said, “it’s all in the music”.

I’m waiting on my Wal-Mart CD deliveries from UPS. Anyone know where I can hear WFY in the meantime?

I am loving the bonus tracks. Wow! I think they may be among the strongest on the entire album.

Forgot to mention: anyone notice that on the songs David wrote or co-wrote, the song is registered with ArchieSongs?

The K-Mart Poster – get a close up of his face; tender, sleepy-eyed and his hand poised under his chin. Simply Beautiful!

http://fansofdavid.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/11/poster.jpg

Gotta go to K-mart. I know my granddaughter NEEDS a poster–ahaha.

np1107#356: I DID hear that! hahaha Very cool. I am sooo over the moon about this CD I can hardly stand it.

What I love about it (besides the obvious!) is that you can’t just listen to it, you HAVE to participate. Whether that means chair bopping, full-out dancing, crying, smiling or singing the harmonies (which takes care of that AI judge quite nicely!) or [fill in your intense emotion here].

My husband asked if I was going to save one CD in the wrapper — “so someday it’ll be like having the first Beatles album”!!!!! LOVE him!

TOfan 338 perhaps some kind soul will mp3 Works For Me for us all up north since we didn’t get on the Canadian walmart CD

np1107 #357 thanks for those words…

Awestruck #362, that would be great, if you hear anything let me know. (The U.S. Wal-Mart site doesn’t ship north of the border either.)

Freo: Works for me is on YouTube:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=trB6xMvx87k

Joner – #336 – I wish I could be discussing the bonus tracks with you all but unfortunately I have not heard them all. iTunes screwed up and did not give me access to my pre-order, so I went into my account and selected the order manually but it downloaded only the standard album. I paid AGAIN in order to have the deluxe version, but I was not able to duplicate that on my office machine without purchasing it A THIRD TIME. The only bonus track I currently have is Somebody Out There. I believe I have Waiting for Yesteray, Falling, and Let Me Go on my home machine. I’ve not heard Works for Me at all.

I happen to think this whole alternate version / bonus tracks / per-order / buy it here / download extras business is utterly ridiculous and absolutely infuriating. It’s like they purposely made it as confusing and as inexplicable as possible so that people would pay multiple times for the same music. It’s disgusting.

David just sang Crush on TRL/MTV. Best yet and to recorded music. Girls in audience were singing along with him and staring at him with that look of adoration like the fan pix we saw during the tour except there were a many, not one with that look. Some guys in audience singing along and bopping to the beat of Crush.

He looks happy and is going to be interviewed next.

Oh, what a wonderful day in ArchuletaVille!

He did great on the TRL/MTVinterview. Said this was the first time he sang to an audience who was singing his song, his own song, not a cover, and how cool that was.

Rest was typical questions and he beamed his answers in Archie-Style! Cameras panned to a huge crowd outside with signs and holding his CD in their hands above their heads. Interviewer asked if he had the crowd follow him from place to place and he responded with his now copyrighted (or should be) David chuckle. (They should copyright “oh boy” too!) LOL

My 10 year old daughter loves Works for me and You Can.
Me tooo!!!!!!

beebee #351, Thanks for your excellent advice to bop around to “Let me go.” As we’ve said, sometimes it’s good to change the channel! I am feeling much better!

Yeah!! my teenage sons like Works for me. Yupi Yupi Yabadabadoo!!

kizzi366- just saw the TRL as well. I thought his performance there was the best too- (vs. leno & today show) He was definitely enjoying the audience!! He had that little authentic smile in between lyrics, and then at the end he shook hands with the audience ala old Donny Osmond. I thought he was lovin’ the girls and their energy.

Darnit! I turned on TRL at 3.35 EST and must have just missed his performance!

Kizzi / 366~ I agree ~”best yet”~ even with the ?hoarseness? did you notice?? worked well though..he works it…sings like no other..cutest thing ever ..loved the outfit..he seemed really relaxed here….seemed like he was having FUN !

Yeah, the multiple album release, bonus songs, and disappearing tracks are baffling to me. So different from the days when Air Supply released their album and you just went to the store and bought it. There’s no way I’d be buying these multiple albums otherwise if not for supporting David.

I-Tunes David is #1 in POP and #2 OVERALL!!!

Look out Taylor Swift, there’s a new kid in town!

happy – yeah, I thought for a minute the girls were pulling him into their collective arms–he definitely had a few seconds of having to free himself and move on. He is in his element when an audience is in front of him and engaged. That would be what HG calls “unleashed.” I so enjoy to the max seeing him so happy!

I have his album in hand and am thinking about all the events and milemarkers and hills and valleys (that I am even aware of) for him to get here. I look at this CD and think of the countless hours of work, artists on many levels, and dedication it took to get it into my hands and I am STUNNED!

Ah, life is so very, very good!

#2 overall? That’s great!!!

OMGGGGGGGGG…#2!!!

Woot Woot…Arch Angels!!

I absolutely love A little too not over you, Barriers and Your eyes don’t lie. Can’t wait to get home to hear the itunes bonus songs!

I can’t stop smiling seeing the reception he’s been getting in New York! What a fantastic day this must be for him! He looked like he was glowing on TRL looking out the window at all the fans below screaming and holding signs for him. He’s really worked hard for this and is so deserving of the accolades and he’s done it with such class.

David’s album is #2 on iTunes. Only Taylor Swift’s new album is ahead of him. WooHoo!

My new madness is Works For Me! – there is an exclamation point at the end of the title on the CD. He wrote this with Daniel Bedingfield – killer falsetto (melts me into ronaldsf proverbial puddle of goo.)

I am obsessing on these lyrics (autobiographical?):

“There were days when the song could not be found
There were days when my voice don’t make no sound for me
For me
But I don’t worry about where I’m going
‘Cause I know just where I wanna be
And it’s time for you to see”

I am loving the bonus tracks – Thanks David!

What a gloreous day for David! He looked like he was really having fun on TRL! He’s just so adorable, did you guys all like the outfit! Sooooo cute!

Kizzi – I just heard “Works for Me.” Love love love it. Snappy, joyful and it has some personal references. The bonus tracks are definitely my favorites right now. Happiness!!

Kizzi, I love Works for Me. I think it’s so soulful, just beautiful!

Loved the TRL segment (and Erin, yeah, the tie!!!). Glad he ditched the mike stand for Crush, he needs to move and groove (à la Ford Day) for that one. When he shook hands at the end, it looked as though he was going to become an involuntary mosh pitter. :)

Erin4david~~Loved…loved..LOVED the outfit…Perfect!! He looked so relaxed and like he really was having FUN!!
Did you notice his voice a bit hoarse?maybe it was just me, but he sounded awesome..so proud and happy for him!!!

Tofan~~love the new avi~ !!

djb, I didn’t notice an hoarseness in his voice. I think this one was the best so far. Crush is a hard song to sing, and he was brilliant!

Can’t wait to see the TRL performance, as I missed it by minutes. I thought he looked great, too, with the fitted jeans, tie, and button-down shirt. I like him in t-shirts, but nice to see him in button downs, too. He looked great. I am sure that we’ll be seeing video of the album signing to be held in a couple hours. He looks so happy.

I love the bonus tracks, and others on the album are growing on me, too. I hope we can get him to #1 overall on iTunes, but he’s done fantastic in any case!

beautiful lyrics on Works for Me!

What a day this has been in ARCHUWORLD! It’s so surreal. We have been counting down to this day on pins & needles not knowing exactly what was coming!
The bonus tracks made the album into a whole new experience. I CANNOT STOP listening to the album!
May I suggest if you purchaced a physical copy..do not open it..keep it in pristine condition..this is the first album of the future winner of Grammys, Oscars, etc, not to mention A R&R Hall of Fame inductee..Mark my words!
THE VOICE, THE FACE, THE VOICE, THE FACE..need I say more?

Remember to vote on VH1!

Hi Erin!!

erin4david: I loved his outfit on Today, that leather jacket was hawt and his shirt and tie with the gold chevron (that is so fifties) was killer on TRL.

He nailed Crush at TRL and TOfan I didn’t even realize the mike stand was gone, but that made it better.

just watched the TRL performance and interview… so great to see him smiling , and the way he appreciates the fans outside.. sweet!
Love “Works for me” but very dissappointed that it is not on the Canadian Walmart version (boo), the only reason I bought it there was for the bonus.

I am enjoying this day so much. To have the actual cd in my hands, I feel so proud to be a fan of this artist! We have so much to look forward to> and I echo so many here who say that every song on this album is so listenable.
I feel a sense of relief that the day is finally here and wonder what David is feeling. He said so many times that this is all for his fans and all I can say is Bravo ,David. WE ARE SO PROUD OF YOU

TOfan and happy … nice new avatars.. me thinks I need a change too

I think we should all pay a visit to his Myspace page and give him kudos for the album!!

http://www.myspace.com/davidarchuleta

SF, so right, see my post up at #361!

djb#386, thanks! Your avi is also quite fetching…. (As is yours, Refnaf, “don’t go changin’ “)

Kizzi, Erin, Ref & others, LOVE “Works for Me.” I’ve replayed it about 10 times on YouTube (why does Wal-Mart have to be such a buzz-kill?).

silverfox, “This is me transmitting from the outer reaches of space, way beyond the moon, beyond the stars…” I loved the visual of you floating or flying hiiiiiigh up there!!!

Inspired by David, I hope your “issues” are resolved soon! I feel your pain! Really do.

HG, your kissing the CD comment was sooo cute!!! LOL! I kissed my CD (delivered from Amazon yesterday) late at night, very spontaneously, but was glad it was after my hubby had already gone to bed! hehe.

ronaldsf, hey fellow Cal Bear person!! It’s my Alma Mater too! When I saw the Daily Cal link, I thought it was some other “Daily Cal” (didn’t have time to go there during work) but it is the good ol’ school paper. That’s fantastic!

Am going to go look for the TRL video now…

I don’t remember who else said it (HG?) but I think that the bonus track, “Somebody Out There,” is arguably his best vocal on the album. Can’t wait for you to hear the bonus tracks, too, Rascal! The fan response about the bonus tracks has been overwhelming!

TOfan…Great minds think alike! haha!

Such a happy day for all of us! I am so excited that he’s already up to number two… I’m sure that if they didn’t have two versions on itunes he’d be at number 1!

The bonus tracks are fantastic… I can’t stop listening to Falling…it’s so sad, but it’s so beautiful! I love Somebody Out There too… he is just amazing. And, I love that these tracks feel so much less “produced.” So much to celebrate today, and so much to look forward to!

On a personal note, I’m feeling happy today as my family has finally started indulging my o.d.d! I came home from the gym to find that my husband had taped David’s Today performance for me… and my daughter sat down and listened to the bonus tracks with me and walked off singing Crush!

TOfan: Thanks for the Works for Me link!

Kizzi#380: Those lyrics screamed out to me too. Sounds autobiographical to me!

I love it. Such a giddy little diddy :] I hear me some Jason Mraz, Jack Johnson, Eric Hutchinson… (Soon, future artists will be saying about their tracks, “it’s got a little Archuleta-essence to it”) And as usual, David’s vocals drape over the music like pure silk.

(Rascal: Sorry to hear about the iTunes screw up)

Tofan /395~thanks` going for a temp change in avi for David’s Big Day~ he looked SOOOO HAPPY on Today Show and TRL…he was beaming!!! So proud.OMG.So Proud !!

just noticed my young son and friends have Davids CD playing!!.. So cool…I do believed they are hooked!!!

Just watched the TRL performance! David looked so great in a shirt tucked in his jeans and with a tie!! I like it better too without the mike stand, love the Archubop!!

I love love love the bonus tracks!!! It is almost as though they were designated bonus tracks instead of being part of the standard CD as a preview of, or glimpses into what might be more the sound of his follow up, future albums. They do sound less processed.

This debut album has so many songs that are radio friendly. I love many many of them, especially the ones I can HEAR David’s VOICE clearly! David, we are proud, I hope you are very proud!!!

I couldn’t read his thank yous without crying, the part he thanks us fans, “… You guys have accepted me the way I am and I really appreciate it. Thank you for respecting me and for always having my back (haha).” Awww… sniff…

momsofteens, I *love* Somebody Out There! His vocals are incredible on that song.

I’m wondering if the bonus tracks might represent where he might go in the future, and the main album was the label’s attempt to build up a young teen fan base to help carry him through future albums.

Vermeer #396, is your avi a pencil sketch of David? That’s beautiful.

Kizzi, erin, davidfan: Works for me is totally working for me too. It makes me feel like dancing. Or is it the contagious global happiness I am feeling? I’ve read entries from Japan, Malaysia, Philippines, Canada and more keeps coming. I once read a sign saying that David is environmentally safe, but with all these emotions running high, I think global temperature just went up two degrees. haha

SF#317…AMEN!!!!!! Beautifully said.

Rascal #365 — Add to all those variations the fact that Walmart Canada has the CD WITHOUT the bonus track, a track that was co-written by David. Surely this will cut into sales in Canada — some of us will be able to do cross-border shopping (I’ll leave early for the Buffalo KISSmas Bash so I can stop at a U.S. Walmart to pick up my four copies). I do have the Deluxe I-Tunes version downloaded (before SOT disappears). Wonder if Jive can explain this mish-mash — maybe I’ll e-mail them. Surely we fans deserve better.

Silver: nice new avatar.
Ronaldsf: I am still missing your reviews.

vermeer – the liner notes are going to be a highly referenced symbol of a musical icon (sound like SF now)!

I am on repeat with “Works for Me!” and “Somebody Out There.” This is why I am a David fan; this is why I watched AI for first time; this is why I have ODD only its not a disorder, it is pure love and beauty and life!

I finally have all the tracks on my Zune! I will join the chorus and say THE BEST are the bonus tracks. Every one.

Go Big D!

Abrra

Oh Kizzi, that was beautiful too. Let’s see if I can do this: {{{{hugs}}}}

{{{{{{hugs}}}}} panamom :)

What an excellent day. David takes NY by storm! I loved watching TRL. David is really doing such a great job making a case for himself.

Works For Me is a gem. It’s just a beautiful song, and it’s gives us another glimpse of what kind of muisc we can expect from David when he is allowed to go his own way. That is exciting.

My 17 year old is listening as we speak. She loves Barrier, and Works for Me….waiting on more feedback. Let me say that I think this cd is going to make David a superstar, not the next one. This one.

Stenocruiser #407, great idea! I emailed WM Canada to tell them there’d be a huge demand for the bonus CD here (and suggested their buyer check the iTunes Canada charts).

SF, beautiful prayer, amen to that.

Beebee, np1107 and fellow MH fans, I’m in a “Works for Me” phase right now, but got a kick out of this vid:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SbQbuOdiJPo

I found this YouTube made to explain “the sign”. As I watched, I realized how many of the things mentioned have come to be for David and us. This lady has her hand in something extra-worldly. It’s a sweet trip down memory lane.

Argh! UPS is not delivering here today so I haven’t heard Works for Me yet, but from your accounts it sounds fantastic!

I don’t understand how a song everyone is loving,”Somebody Out There” can disappear?? Ok, so we can’t BUY it anywhere after today…YET. It doesn’t make sense to me. Why does this happen? Who makes those decisions? Is it a common practice? SOT is one of the better songs on the album..David’s vocals are so… David! I hate that the whole world may not have the opportunity to hear it! Dang! Can’t WE DO SOMTHING?

FALLING has some of the saddest lyrics, but also the most beautiful melody I’ve ever heard. Can’t get it out of my head…

Just thought of something..this morning on the Today show, David changed the ending of CRUSH ever so slightly..so like David! makes every performance a little bit “new”. I missed TRL..I was busy making sure all the the Walmarts, Kmarts, Targets here had David’s Album out and on display..Poor clerks, some of them actually thought I was a VIP from High places. I had to wait at a Kmart while a clerk opened the box of CD’s and put them up on display..But I was nice and said “GOOD JOB! I’ll be sure and tell your manager!” I hope I don’t get in trouble for impersonating a VIP!! hahaha!

OH Rascal made a new thread. Running over there.

UH-OH..rascal is not a happy camper!

I’ll be totally shallow and bring up the K-Mart poster.

That’s purr-fection! Gosh! He looks like a prince lost in the big city like in those teenage movies. What a face!

Hey valbraz, that K-Mart poster is deep – deeply beautiful, incredibly tender. The hand posed slightly under the chin is perfection. Nothing shallow about the poster, very deep, very studied!

For me, Works for Me sounds a lot like he has a Stevie Wonder vibe going on there.

Josie, #13. I have listened to David’s CD twice and I have found many, many reasons to love it!!! “To Be With You” moved me so deeply to my core that I still weep when I think of it. “Desperate” reminded me of going through periods of personal darkness and pain and just praying for someone to care enough to reach out to me. And above all else, there is David’s voice!!! So smooth and nuanced, so penetrating and emotive! I really don’t understand why so many people are dumping on the CD. Is it perfect? No. Is it a collection of beautiful songs brought to us by the greatest singer of his generation? YES!!!!!!! I’m sure I will come to love this work of vocal art more and more each time I listen to it. Thanks for your words of encouragement!!!

Beebee, “Works for Me!” is so unique and catchy! Seriously, why did I have to go to Walmart’s and not my favorite music store just to get this little gem? Grrrrrrr.

Vermeer, I couldn’t help myself. The CD cover was just so kissable! ha ha!

Haha! You crack me up!
It’s deep, indeed!
And we’re deeply troubled adults! LOL!
