The Virtues of Two

In this his first professional year as a musical artist David Archuleta has been specializing in second. Runner up to the first-place finisher on American Idol, his debut single peaking at No. 2, and sales of 183,000 putting his freshman album just behind the top spot on the Billboard Album chart for the week. If nothing else, David’s well-known integrity has certainly expressed itself in an admirable consistency.
I really like this position for David at this point in his career. Two feels true. The connotations associated with second are more correct for someone who is by no means reaching his full potential. There is room to move. Peaks to be scaled. A number-one spot confers definitions and expectations that are not always entirely ideal, especially at this point in a career path. Had David been hitting number-one spots with the material off this particular album, I think I would be concerned that it would be assessed as being a better fit than it is. And that would be far too limiting.
The plain truth is that although David might be in the big leagues now, he is not yet batting homers. Solid singles, doubles, maybe a triple here and there (”Somebody Out There”), but the kid is still working out. The number-two spots are just the right place for him at the moment; far above the mean, nipping at the heels of glory, setting the stage for great things to come. What is abundantly clear to anyone watching is that while most of his contest predecessors peaked with their first efforts, Mr. Archuleta is just getting started.
In the end, these kinds of rankings are meaningless, of course, especially when considering where the value of an artist really lies. With the right material, David has the ability to create an exclusive channel between his heart and the heart of the listener such that the world veritably disappears. The most hardened critics (if they are worthy of the title) have already acknowledged this potential. They know it’s coming. The irony is that David’s real stardom will not ensue from clever executive strategy but from a commitment to trust David himself.
Only then will his work be second to none.

As usual Rascal, eloquently put. And even if he stays in #2 for some time, that’s OK. Nay, immaterial even, cos he is not in it for the glory. And in our hearts, he will always be #1. I would gamble that for David, that’s what all will matter

Two feels true.
I agree – The number One spot would feel forced, something that was inorganic for someone so new.
Kind of like everyone shouting to buy several copies and vote in this poll or that poll. Lets let it happen naturally and it surely will.

Yes Rascal YES!!!!! Sweet Mercy give me strength. That voice literally cuts into my soul, wraps around my heart and smothers me in glory. Every cell in me dances, and is set afire. I never knew that my ears could be so connected to my very essence.

Good morning, Rascal. It’s interesting how we think alike. I couldn’t have said it better myself. No.2 is fast becoming David’s magic number! I think it was someone on Snarky Archies who said something to the effect of “And here we thought he was just making the peace sign.” Heh.
Another thing about being No. 2: it’s such a non-offensive place to be. It’s a “safe” spot – safe in that, being number 1 puts you in harm’s way (whether it’s over-praise or over-attack). But, as you put it, it keeps the number 1s on high alert since they always have to look back to see if No. 2 is “nipping at the heels of glory.” He’s safe but in a formidable position in which others on top hear the message: “Watch out! Cause I’m coming at ya!”
It really fits his personality too. Strong enough and awesome enough to be a contender but humble enough to concede the glory to someone else.
It’s all good, because in due time, when he’s got experience under his belt, and more years, the number 1s will start rolling in.

Yes, number two fits our sweet guy. What the heck, he’s only seventeen, he’s got years ahead of him to explore and grow as an artist. Being number two perhaps can take off some of the pressure and allow him some emotional space to discover his own voice.
And thanks rascal for calling out my favorite of all seventeen cuts – Somebody Out There, a near perfect song.

Masterful analysis as always, Rascal. I am perfectly fine with David debuting at #2. I wrote sometime last week imagine peaking at 17?
Although I love this cd madly, there is no way that this is his best or his defining work. As Betsy wrote about things occuring inorganically or forcing things…that is why I don’t do many polls because I know from past experience that just because a certain person might win poll after poll, it isn’t a true, organic gauging of popularity. Also being an idol viewer from way back I see how fans in trying to prove a point (that the wrong person won), miss the big picture. While this one fanbase worked the sales and the polls after the initial ‘win’ he had to sink or swin on his own, and sink he did. That will not happen to David.
I would much rather just watch things unfold, watch David savor this experience, and soak up everything that he’s learned, just like the little sponge that he is, than to put undo, and unnecessary pressure on him to be able to hit homeruns right out of the gate. Hell, at least he’s in the game and not sitting on the bench. And believe me, he’s in this game!

Well said, Rascal.
From my own observation and experience, in most cases in the family, the second child is the brightest and more enterprising among the brood.
Also, David is the second child of Jeff Archuleta. Am I correct?

“Two feels true… There is room to move. Peaks to be scaled.” LOVE that, Rascal.
I was just thinking this morning that I look forward to the day that a great musical pairing can happen for David.
Pavarotti had Puccini. Frank Sinatra had Nelson Riddle. Michael Jackson had Quincy Jones. All the greats seemed to have an equally great writer, arranger or producer to work with at some point who elevated their talents to a sublime level.
We know David has the potential to be right up there with the best of the best and I just hope there are collaborators out there good enough to do justice to his amazingness.

TOfan, I am so waiting for the day when David finds his musical match. I think I had already said, just like Michael Jackson had Quincy Jones (and, as you remind us here, the way Pavarotti had Puccini), so too will David find his musical pairing. When that happens, Watch out, World!
All in due time, of course.

Well said Rascal…..humble and graceful as he is I’am glad he’s at the # 2 spot. A higher power is in charge of David and has great plans for his life. He first thanked G_D on his album…and he made it quite clear that he hope to please him with the gift that he has given him, so this young man has deeper meaning for his talent than we will ever imagine. David is happy!!! and so I’m I.

Greast post again rascal…I trust David, and no matter what I always will… i get a little edgy when I think about polls and stats… all I want for David is for him to be using his gift, and finding satisfaction in that…He wants to touch people and I think he knows that that is already happening! #2 is just fine.
TOfan I agree, I await the day when David can match up with someone who will really let him soar….and push him higher
I’m a little (well alot) selfish in that I want David’s mature
“desparate” and “Falling” and “Sot” side to be the focus… I’m still having trouble sharing him with the “tweens” but they will move on to the next flavour (saw an interviewer ask a teen if she liked David for his music or because he was cute… she said cute) not that I don’t loove all the somgs.. TMH is really growing on me.
I am a freak for his voice
I will be a fan unconditionally, for life .SF, didn’t you say we need to stay healthy for David? I best go take a walk…

Rascal,
I think true angels think alike!
Just before I opened this page – the first David-related I read everyday – I thought, ‘I think he’s writing about all the good things that comes with 2 or as 2′.
Of all the great, true points you made one expresses my feelings the best:
‘What is abundantly clear to anyone watching is that while most of his contest predecessors peaked with their first efforts, Mr. Archuleta is just getting started.’
Hello Gorgeous said:
‘It really fits his personality too. Strong enough and awesome enough to be a contender but humble enough to concede the glory to someone else.’
Isn’t that so true? Ignorance is daring in its claims for respect and consequence, but wisdom is always humble and cautious. Two becomes our David!

Not when I read posts like these. And I still look in the mirror and ask myself if all this is real..how lucky was I that David came into my life when he did! Maybe I have an angel on MY shoulder too! We all do..maybe that’s why we GET David..and his Angel Dust is being sprinkled here and there..everywhere! OMGosh..the things that come out of my mouth…I’m really not cra-zeh..David is joy & happiness, isn’t he?! Yes, everything does happen for a reason – AND good things come to those who wait (heck, he even says it in You Can).

I was sitting at my desk at work and reading all the lovely things being said about David, all the while his CD was playing “Just to be with you” which makes me cry everytime I hear it, and that’s when I read your line about Webber and while the tears were steaming I started laughing. Which is a good thing because it brought me out of my darkness. So to you I say THANK YOU . When you hear him sing “Just to be with you” can’t you visualize David holding that lucky someone for the first time? Boy, I know I’m getting old know, it must be the weather because I’m crying over the most ridiculous things. Oops, Your eyes don’t lie is playing now, awesome. slvrfox (junior)…what’s quick wit?? haha!
I know what you mean..some of David’s songs reduce me to tears, then I’m bopping in my chair to some others, then just swaying to others..and I swear, they are all soooo good!
I have to say something about FALLING. So many people think the song is beautiful, but won’t listen to it as much as the others, I think because it is so sad and it’s just “not David”..but what they don’t understand is it IS David at his most unselfish, compassionate self..the best part of him, I think. And I also think he is
very PROUD of this song, otherwise it would NOT be on the album at all. Some fans only want to think of David as always smiling or laughing, but he wouldn’t be human if he doesn’t feel sad or badly about things that happen in the world. Because he is who he is, he may even FEEL at a deeper level than most. He has so many things he wants to share with us, I think. He will share with his own lyrics and melodies, his own language which is music. His song FALLING was a start.

Joner – “God Bless the writers’ strike….If not for that, I would never have veered down the path which lead me to David Archuleta.”
Ironically, it was my younger sister’s love of Cook that brought me to our David. haha! I live in Kansas City. I despise AI. My sister loves the show. I had never watched it. No interest whatsoever. My sister, and this entire town, was all aglow over Cook. My sister and I usually share the same musical tastes…most of the time. And, funny enough, we have shared a love of Eva Cassidy for many years. And, she wanted someone to talk about AI with. I refused. She plotted.
She finally whined and begged enough that I gave in (she used the puppy dog eyes on me and well…). I watched AI so we could talk about the show in general and Cook specifically.
Oooops! haha! She kinda miscalculated there. tee hee…
Unfortunately, it was top 4 week before this occurred, so I had a LOT of catching up to do.

LOL on #46 TOfan. I’ve had the thought often that David really hit pay dirt in terms of gifts handed down from parents. Jeff plays Jazz trumpet and also arranges music. David has shown with this album that he is capable in that department despite his youth. Lupe is a singer, and, uh. David is a S.I.N.G.E.R. of the likes I haven’t heard often. Lupe is also a dancer, and I believe he got her ability to move well, even if he’s not always confident with it. I read somewhere that his maternal grandmother (Abuelita) is also a music arranger.
And notice I didn’t even mention the looks.
So glad a song he co-wrote will be the second single.

Finally a thread I can catch up quickly. I have been out of the game due to family illness, but had been lurking and LOL with all the comments.
Rascal, as always, so beautifully written: “David has the ability to create an exclusive channel between his heart and the heart of the listener such that the world veritably disappears”
And that ‘trust the Archuleta factor’ was never so true. He has my trust for sure.
‘Only then will his work be second to none’
DA is numero UNO for me. However, and quite frankly, I don’t care about the charts, the rankings or the so called experts’ opinion. I am a fan not because of the numbers and the results, but because of David himself and what he inspires others. I want for him all the recognition, but not because I need it as a fan, but because I want him to know that fans appreciate his hard work, and that we love his music.
When it comes to music, he can be whatever number he (or the charts) wants, for me he is NUMBER ONE.
And there are no other numbers after that.

Amy at Snarky’s had some funny commentary about the way #2 circled David. Her last sentence is the one that HG mentioned, and it is hilarious, imho! lol Enjoy!
“Okay, baby boy’s fondness for the number two is kind of cute. Being second eldest, finishing #2 on idol, having a pas de deux choreographed to your rendition of Imagine (and performed by a couple!), Crush having a #2 Hot 100 debut, David Archuleta debuting on Billboard at #2 with 200 000 sold…it works for me. Just make sure you manage to take your eponymous disc to 2x platinum, if you insist on sticking with this. You listening to me, David? Or do I have to say it twice?”
“…mon dieu, I just realized that’s not a freaking peace sign he’s been flashing us this entire time.”
My heart belongs to David now and forever, but I’m definitely loving me some Amy on this one. hahaha
I, too, look forward to the time when David will take his rightful place in the world–second to none. However, I do think this is a good place for him at this point. Huge accomplishments yet less threatening. Something left to shoot for. I’m loving what he’s doing now, and I cannot wait for the unbelievable things that are to come.
I love that David was a Jeopardy question last night! How cool is that?!!
Even my son, the hard-rock loving Anti-David, is coming around. Told me yesterday that his favorite song of David’s SO FAR (what?!) is the song about mountains (Smoky Mountain Memories). I almost had a cardiac I was so surprised after the grief he’s given me over David. Will wonders never cease?!! lol
I think he’s finally realizing that I’m not the only one who is impressed out of their mind over David. Noticed him looking over my shoulder a lot as I watched David and Kathy’s video repeatedly and me viewing David on Ellen, Spike, Bonnie, Leno, etc. The bellyaching has subsided. David’s charm is undeniable when you really take a look. And the talent. Wow. That’s a given.

I hear that David, Jeff and others are busy conceptualizing the music video for ALTNOY. I am so excited to see this one! I guess TMH’s video was all planned out, so now they are switching gears.
I’m loving this new direction and the fact that Jive is responding to the market (read: us!). I think this one will be particularly thrilling for David coz he co-wrote it (actually, first writing credit went to him). Also, Dean Kaelin thought these were David’s best vocals on the whole album.
Excited over here!

Joner 59, absolutely! I wholeheartedly agree with you. David getting the respect that he deserves for being an out of the world singer AND a songwriter is huge. But I thought of money too, after reading that article some threads past about how much money goes into making an album and the promotion, the band, etc. etc. that it takes awhile and a larger number of album sales before the artist gets to make any kind of profit, I really want to see David get there sooner than later, considering the hard work he put into this and continues to by promoting it and not mention the sacrifices his whole family is making. Phew! I’m taking a deep breadth. That was a long sentence!
Go Big D!!

I like number 2 at 183,000, but I would have loved number 2 at 225,000 + as projected. Does anyone know if there are sale figures by state or by store?
I very much wonder what the sales were in the state of Utah.
I am glad Jive changed the second single for a very weird reason; I was bummed about the line “something about your BEAUTIFUL face”, especially since this song was geared for teenagers and most teenagers do not consider themselves beautiful. It just reinforced stereotypical attitudes about who one is supposed to be attracted to. Besides I found the adjective to be so un-David. I like the line “something about the look in your eyes”.

Rascal, you did it again. You read my mind. I saw HG’s post #235 on yesterday’s thread referencing “No. 2, his magic number”. I couldn’t stop thinking about it, and now this new post. Yes, the recurring theme and the potential of being at 2 is undeniable. But I agree that the greatest measure of David’s success will be in his ability to make those heart connections — that “exclusive channel between his heart and the heart of the listener” you speak of. That is the best example, IMHO, of his “2” virtue. David sings to us, and it’s like a conversation between souls. He sings, and we have to reciprocate. There’s just no other way about it.

It’s obvious that this was a very calculated change on Jive’s part. Although we were hearing that Touch My Hand was the next single, it flew in the face of things we were seeing….polls/surveys about ALTNOY, the fact that they used ALTNOY as background music in one of the major soap operas…they were definitely sizing it up as a possible alternative to Touch My Hand.
The feedback made sense (possibly coupled by prompting from Jeff and/or David?) and the change was made.
It was a business decision, that’s for sure, but I’m certain they took the fan comments into consideration as well.

“good thing he and his fan base can be the velvet hammer!”
More like money talks, it seems to me. Once I saw that ALTNOY was way ahead of TMH in terms of popularity on itunes and elsewhere, I figured it was a matter of time…
That plus the fact that the song was heard in the background of a soap opera! (As the World Turns).
Thank Goodness, is all I have to say. I think I’ve been on record disapproving of TMH. The best thing about ALTNOY is not just that David co-wrote it, the song features his best bridge falsetto EVER.
Go David!

TOFan – whatta – FUSTY — I nearly spilled my coffee! LOL
CHIKEE – We are the same for our love for TMH
Now that ALTNOY is the 2nd single, that should give him more time to “perfect” the guitar for TMH. He did say in the MTVBuzzworthy interview that he needs more time to be comfortable doing the guitar himslef. But, he plays the songs on guitar to friends — oh to be in the inner sanctum!
The other great thing with ALTNOY – David gets FIRST writing credit for this song. Bodes well for him to be taken more seriously by the market outside PlanetArchuleta.
SF, Jr – Re FALLING – you have to kiss Jeff for the song ever making the cut, even if just a bonus track. It was said he really fought hard for it despite the blunt reaction of a Jive exec that the CD is not a “vanity album”.
Oh well, I wish the market would create enuff buzz for SOT to be released as a single soon. That’s my Christmas grown-up wish

Well, I’m sure the “Watching David’s Back” machine helps too!
Now, I’m reading elsewhere that Jive already had a whole music video concept for TMH, so their switching gears with ALTNOY is intriguing. Is this normal for labels to do?
Just wondering….all of a sudden, I’m getting a picture of a record label that has a specific image of David and then suddenly being surprised by him and the response to him. Are they a bit clueless here?
Everything about their plans – from “Crush”’s immediate success right out the gate and their really their slow build-up in response – seems like they’re not quite understanding what they’ve got on their hands.
Just trying to figure out their sudden switcheroo. Money (and fans) are part of the decision, but something about their operation doesn’t feel like they’re ready.
They’re like my worst students, I swear! No research, no preparation, turning in rough drafts like they’re final papers…(Sorry for the analogy: it’s that time of the school year.)
I mean, was it that difficult to figure out that ALTNOY and at least four other songs were much stronger second-single contenders over TMH? Sheesh!

HG — Am not surprised that Jive may have been “clueless” in the beginning when it comes to DA. After all, they are still working with 19R remember. So the natural tendency is to rely on the machinery that brought you the talent.

Regarding Jive being clueless when they first started working with David, I would hope that by the time they finished reworking Angels so that David could do the ending the way he wanted (more similar to Tour Angels than Studio Angels), that they realized they can’t just make assumptions about David’s voice/musicality and the direction that he really wants a song to go. Also, they must have learned the hard way that David changes-up his songs every time he sings them.

I’m glad David has had the chance to go to all those concerts, and I’m sure he’s getting some ideas for his own performance in concert. I think he’s going to be great. He was so good on the AI tour, no, not a “showman” like Cookie, but he had the audience eating out of his hands singing covers! I can’t wait to see what he’ll do with his own songs! I know the Jingle concerts will be different with all the fans of the other acts, but he feeds off the audiences, so I think he’ll be great. They’re gonna love him! And I buh-lieve he will surprise a lot of people…Yes, even you rascal!
And on that note, I will say g’nite all…today was a good day with great news! And for David…
Dear Lord, We are unworthy to ask, but we are asking anyway, please…
Take Care Of Our Earth Angel, David. Watch over him, Protect him from all harm. Cloak him with your love and give him the strength to endure all that’s thrown in his path. Give him the courage and guidance to SAY NO to those who ask for more than he can reasonably give. Surround him with loving and supportive people who love him UNCONDITIONALLY as we, his ARCHANGELS do. SEPARATE HIM FROM THOSE WHO HAVE AGENDAS OTHER THAN FOR HIS WELLBEING. Give him rest when he’s weary and fatigued. Give him the stamina to sustain his hectic pace. Give him assurance when he feels doubt. Give him joy when he feels sad. Cloak him always in your protective arms. Keep him healthy and strong so he can continue fulfilling the Destiny which was written in his Book of Life before he was born.
This we, though unworthy, humbly pray. Amen.
Sweet dreams David, be safe & secure in our love always! CONTIGO SIEMPRE CON AMOR! Take care.
We love you madly!

I was able to get back almost all my videos but NOT the Stephen Colbert one. YouTube had taken it down by then. Drat! I tried to find it on Colbert’s site, everywhere I could think of to try but to no avail. Does anyone around here have it? I’d love to get it again. It’s definitely a keeper.

Rascal105 – I went back and read your August Post I was curious about what you sad about Davids performance which was informative. But what i ended
up really appreciated was what you said in closing.
“David offstage is another thing entirely. Everything you’ve heard is true. He is, in a sense, other-worldly. There is indeed an aura around him, although it is, I would say, as much of a protection as it is anything else. There is a slight distance about him, like a fawn in the forest that is stunning in its beauty and strangely welcoming in its gaze, but ultimately reluctant to let you get too close. There is something decidedly precious about David, but it is not fragile. I got this sense about him from the very beginning and I felt it quite strongly in his presence: David is an unusually powerful individual, with an iron resolve and steely determination. Make no mistake: David’s gentle compassion is the sign of a spiritual warrior. No one will ever get him to do what is not in his heart to pursue.”
I was very touched by your words. Thanks for sharing not just your gift of discernment but also your true gift of putting it to paper so beautifully.

So, I read the HDD fine print and saw the discussion on MJ’s blog that it was 19M who terminated Jordin Sparks and not the other way around. If this is how things went down, they are complete turds, and I’m so glad Jeff and David knew to find management elsewhere right away. I see no viable reason for 19M to drop Jordin. She may have had a slow start, but she has climbed steadily, and her album is near platinum!
And if she’s not as popular as their cash cows (Carrie, Daughtry, and perhaps now Cook), whose fault is that but theirs? Isn’t it the job of management to get their artists “out there”? She was last year’s Idol, but just in comparison to this year’s Idol (Cook) it’s clear she didn’t get the same promotion – a gig on SNL the weekend before the elections, the coronation song airing on NBC’s coverage of the Summer Olympics opening ceremony, etc. Of course, one could say that, because they wanted to return to Carrie-Underwood-type sales is why they’re heavily promoting Cook since Jordin “underperformed” as an idol winner. After all, as someone said on MJ’s blog, their goal is not about crafting musical talent with longevity but to recycle ready-made “superstars” out of their idol winners just to give legitimacy to their ultimate cash cow: the American Idol TV show.
I’m raising this Jordin Sparks discussion because it has implications for David. I really suspect, because the whole 19 gang are complete bottom-liners, that in pushing for a teen Idol, as they did last year (what with the previous idol winner the year before being perceived as “too old”) they really had their greedy little eyes on a viable contender to compete against Disney’s reigning teens (Miley, Jonus Brothers, High School Musical – I think this is part of Disney, am I correct?). With past Idol winners/finalists, they already dominated the pop scene across viable genres: pop (Kelly), R&B (Ruben, Fantasia, Jennifer Hudson), country (Carrie), and pop/rock (Daughtry). I imagine they thought Jordin would be their answer to Disney, but she didn’t take off like they imagined she would. Which is why they initially went bananas over David, but I honestly think – what with the rumors that Jordin’s dad was a whole lot of trouble during the contract negotiations and with Jeff proving that he’s no pushover (and, yes, making it known that he was not on board with having David transformed into some new Disney prince because Jeff, like David, are all about the musical integrity) – this is why they suddenly started pushing Cook for the win and why the “stage dad” rumors started circulating. I think I’ve posted this before.
Whatever. I hope Azoff picks Jordin up; I think she’s too talented and just getting started as a young singer to be dropped so unceremoniously. Unless our current economy is forcing management to make tough decisions. Even so, that she’s selling as well as she is despite our tanking economy means there is definitely room for growth.
Ugh! The music industry sucks! They have no creativity, no long-term plans to think about how they can save themselves in our present economy and our digital age, and I have no patience with their lack of artist-management skills. If the porn industry and the video game industry can take advantage of digital technology (and DOMINATE in sales), the music industry has no excuse! I’m just a a little frustrated by them for the moment, because these kinds of business decisions will compromise the future success of phenomenal talents like David.

jackryan4DA – #89 – I had heard the “vanity” line somewhere but I didn’t realize that a Jive executive had said it. Extremely interesting because it so vividly betrays how meager their knowledge of David must really be: He is of course very last person in the world to do anything for the sake of vanity; indeed he would be horrified at the very thought.
David clearly needs someone to fight these battles on his behalf (all artists do), but I confess that I hope Jeff will soon relinquish this role. No matter how genuine his interests, Jeff’s credibility in such confrontations will invariably suffer due to the very fact of his being David’s father. Although a paid manager isn’t likely to be seen as having any objectivity either, they will at least be perceived as representing David’s interests without the complications and suspicions that go along with a familial relationship. Jeff could still be just as involved as David wants him to be, but the face of Team David in negotiations ought to be purely professional.

Completely agree, Rasal#127. I’m curious, JR, where did you get that quote that Jive was resisting a “vanity” album from David (and, honestly, even if this is so not what David’s all about, when the heck was an artist’s work anything but a “vanity” album, and as their fans, do we really want anything else other than that, as opposed to a Jive vanity album?).
Interesting stuff. Obviously I’m still in my music-industry-sucks-mindset, even though I finally fell asleep after posting in the wee hours.
Good morning all! I woke up from my sixth David dream:
I was hanging out with friends in my living room – David was also there too with some of his friends. We were watching TV but not really paying attention. David was patiently sitting below me so that I could style his hair. (I know, right? Could we get any more intimate than this?) I of course was trying to get his hair just like how I liked it (from his “Heaven” days) while he was saying he wanted it another way. I was basically convincing him why this style worked better for him, so he was like, OK, not much resistance on his part. When I was done, he and his friends left to get ready for their upcoming show.
Me and my friends were going to head out later for it. On our way to the concert hall, I found out my friends and I had these cushiony seats right up close to the stage! Other seats behind us were your typical auditorium seats. For whatever reason, though, the show was severely delayed. So, I started wandering around, and towards the back, I bumped into my dissertation advisor from my graduate school days. She’s very much like Kathy Griffen in having the same kind of wicked and biting sense of humor (I was a sensitive soul in those days, very much like David, so she used to drive me nuts and never knew when to take her seriously – my dissertation writing period was truly miserable, I can’t tell ya how), so when I saw her and proudly proclaimed to her group that “This is my dissertation advisor!” She responded with that wicked sense of humor: “Yeah, I remember that dissertation. It was trash! Absolute trash! I’m still in utter shock that you even got that piece of trash published. Do you see how our young scholars have absolutely no shame?”
At this point, I was completely mortified that she was trashing my work like that in front of people, but I tried to laugh it off, remembering that this is how she is and that she’s making a crazy kind of joke. So I came up with a retort: “How trashy could my dissertation have been? You signed off on it!” The group around her laughed, thinking I made a good comeback, and she just looked at me in that kind of “good for you” kind of way.
I then returned to my seat, because the opening act was starting. Oy! That act was horrid! The lead singer kept forgetting the lyrics! People started booing, and I was thinking I should try to get backstage and check up on David, maybe hang out there until it was time for his performance. Before I got there, a stage manager told me I was up next! I’m like, “What? I’m not part of this.” She showed me the program and, indeed, I’m part of the line-up where I’m to give my lecture (the one I did comparing American Idol and the Presidential Elections). My heart started beating wildly. I told myself I could do it since I know that lecture like the back of my hand, but I wasn’t sure how well I could wing it so easily without preparation, especially since the multimedia was part of it, and I didn’t have that with me. And while looking out at a very impatient audience, I started thinking of ways to get out of it.
And then I woke up.

“….But after the second-place finish, David struck a deal with Jive Records (which has produced more top-10 artists in the last 8 years, more than any other label I know of). But in the process of creating David’s debut album, tensions ran high between Jive and the Archuletas.
“This isn’t a vanity album,” a record label exec allegedly told Jeff Archuleta, after he tried repeatedly to get “more of David on the album.” What Jeff wanted was to get songs that David had either written or co-written to be on the new release. As a songwriter myself and a student of the charts, I don’t see any reason why the label should deny the Archuletas their request….”

SICK, SICK, SICK? ha ha! Speak for yourself, SF.
I personally think our dreams are a “healthy” response to David Overload, which comes from frequenting David fansites like Noting David, IDF, or Snarky Archies on a daily basis, combined with playing his album in the background. Sooner than later, David seeps his way into our subconscious. I also wonder if we’re the only ones ‘fessing up to our dreams here. I know I find it fulfilling being able to write down dreams, so I appreciate everyone here letting me post my David dreams. At some point, I think I’ll go through the archives and put the David dreams together and see what I come up with.

OK, after reading that article, I’m going to say this: I think the writer is incredibly tacky putting out there in public view that there was tension between Jive and the Archuletas.
I don’t think it’s beyond Jive to say something as insulting as telling an artist he can’t do a “vanity” album of his own music (God forbid an artist gets his own work showcased on his debut album). However, this is hearsay. The author claims Jeff told him that, and I think we all know David would never reveal such things, even if this were true.
Who is this person, who’s basically broadcasting that he’s “in the know” and who thinks he has a right to let the fanbase know of such things, which could be detrimental in forming public opinion? I’m inclined to take all the information written with a grain of salt.

Yeah, the magazine article with the “vanity” quote in it was a little weird. Although they did get into tussles over the music now and then during the production process, as various sources have revealed, the article appeared in an unofficial Mormon magazine. The whole writing of it was a little strange, if you ask me, as the article tended to wander between topics with few or no sources identified.

HG…the author of that story is Aaron Edson, an LDS, supposedly has worked with David and Brook White. He’s a music producer & songwriter.
Liz…The only dreams we can recall are the ones we have just before waking up. Supposedly we can have many, many dreams in one night, so chances are you do dream about David, but you just don’t rememeber.
Also, most people dream in black & white. Dreaming in color is supposedly rare. Some people say they NEVER dream, but all humans dream. Even newborns “dream”..of course that’s debatable, but I personally buh-lieve babies are dreaming of their past lives, which they can only remember in dreams until those dream memories disappear. If you watch a baby sleep, sometimes they smile, sometimes they whimper in their sleep. They have to be “dreaming” about something…anyway, now you know a little bit more about my eccentricities…UH-OH!

Betsy, hope you feel better!
SF, I saw the information on the author. What I was getting at with my question is: who specifically is he to basically broadcast what I think is real personal information about the Archuletas and their interaction with his record label. His being a music producer and songwriter (and his being LDS) certainly doesn’t entitle him to offer behind-the-scenes stories.
That kind of attributed quote from Jeff could have negative consequences for both Jeff and David, if this got out (which it already has), and, more importantly, if it got spun in the media in a certain way. It’s a hearsay quote, so it’s an unfair thing to be reporting. Granted, only regular readers of this LDS would be privy to this info, but considering that the link has already been shared beyond their intended audience, see how – when taken out of context – things could get ugly?
This is how rumors get started, and probably how the “stage dad” thing got started in the first place! That’s what I was objecting to.

Back to the Jordan dropping or being dropped by 19M, I wonder if her ability to potentially sell concert tickets on her own has anything to do wiith it? Don’t the managers get a big cut of this? Also endorsements? I think David will have a good concert pull and he could certainly endorse some top-end products and that is where the money is, I think. That money is needed to support the music. I want David to become independent. I think a couple very good endorsements would be a great way to get his name out there.

collegemom, interesting theory, but again, that’s the job of her management to do such things (booking concerts, getting endorsements). It’s their job to get artists like Jordin out there. There are a bunch of endorsements she could have done as a big-boned pretty girl, which is a rarity in the entertainment industry. Obviously, 19M is not up to the task.
And Jordin has headlined for Alicia Keyes. I was hoping that, as two teens from Idol and who share a lable, she and David could one day do a joint tour. I wonder if this could still happen.

The dream talk has reminded me of a couple of dreams that I’ve had that featured David.
The one I particularly remember is one where we are in a small high school or college classroom. I’ve heard that David will be singing at a small venue event at the school later that day. I was certain that I wouldn’t be able to go coz I wasn’t a student and David wouldn’t want me to intrude into this student event. He tells me to come with him, however, and we go through a door into what appears to be a chemistry lab. We sit on the tall stools and face one another. [I'm injecting a thought here--don't LAUGH too hard; I'm just reporting what went on, okay?] Anyway, he leans forward and takes my hands in his and tells me that he WANTS me to come to the event. He wants me to come and hear him sing. I smile and accede, and the dream fades out. That’s it. I do remember colors in the dream.
It’s almost embarrassing to admit that I dreamt that one up, but fact is fact! Anyway, it was nice to see him again. haha I have no comprehension of dream interpretation, so I have little clue what this one would mean.
Oddly enough, I rarely remember dreams. A million years ago I, who hate scary movies and avoid them like the plague, went on a double date to a movie that turned out to be quite disturbing. I used to have weird, scary dreams (vivid, bizarre), so I was really concerned about the dreams that would follow the viewing of that movie. So, I prayed REALLY hard that I wouldn’t have bad dreams. That was about 30 years ago, and I haven’t had one since.
I actually don’t often remember dreams, but I also make no attempt to remember them. This one I couldn’t forget coz David was in it. I guess it’s not surprising that I should dream about him since he occupies so much of my waking time and attention. Anyway, I loved it.
David is singing ‘Somebody Out There’ in the background now. What a beautiful voice, soul and song! I wonder if the fact that it’s in his upper register would put people off when it comes to the radio. I typically prefer his lower register, but this song is just exquisite. I must like it best coz I’ve played it more than any other song on the album. Current count for this computer alone is 122 times. Tells you something there. lol

Bookaholic…another really nice dream!
I often wonder what David dreams about..that is when he actually gets to sleep…haha!
methinks a volume an inch thick could be written about all the dreams the Archangels, Angels and Mangels have of David..what a great read the would be! Even the not so good dreams like the one HG and I had a while back.
ojs..so David is going to be IN Toronto on 12/9? So that means he’s in Sacramento on 12/3, then Houston on 12/7, then after that one concert after another…hectic, hectic pace!

vermeer, I’m loving your interpretation of my dream. I kinda figured I was blending in the Kathy/David video, the advice I gave my friend, my anxiously waiting to get tickets for that Jingle Jam concert, etc. and, as always, my anxiety about teaching and “performing.”
Bookaholic, I absolutely love your dream – especially the part where David takes his hands in yours.
Hmmm, David showing up in our living rooms and us processing his upcoming concert, seems like we’re channeling his own excitement/anxiety about performing in the big leagues now, even as he wants to maintain intimate connection with his Original Archangels. Fascinating we’re all having almost similar dreams about this.
SF, one day you must be bold and tell us what you really think about the “orbit.”
Josie, thanks for the blog link. David is too adorable (and just look at him promoting, not one but THREE Cook songs off his album! – Grrrrrrr – is Cook promoting 3 songs from David’s album?).
I can’t help my resentment: I believe in reciprocity.

If this inside scoop from HDD is correct David will not be in the top 10 albums next week..
YOUR WEAKEND TOP 10 CHART PREVIEW: The industry’s hot streak continues (we love typing those words) leading into what’s expected to be a boffo Thanksgiving week, with Columbia diva Beyonce aiming to bow north of 500k, while two other debuts are headed toward the exclusive neighborhood of 280-300k. Those would be David Cook (19/RCA/RMG) and Nickelback (Roadrunner). Taylor Swift (Big Machine/Universal Republic), this week’s champ, will continue her momentum with 230-240K, while Now 29 (UMe) should round out the Top 5 with 140-150k. We’re projecting 120-130k on Chop Shop/Atlantic’s soundtrack to Twilight, opening today, followed by a fourth debut, Columbia’s Il Divo, which is trending toward 110-120k. Enya (Reprise), with 90-100k, should edge out High School Musical 3 (Walt Disney), with 80-85k, while AC/DC appears headed to be Columbia’s third Top 10 entry, with 65-70k.

Evey, I’m not ready to panic yet. He’s got two major appearances coming up: AMA and Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade, that plus Black Friday. I’m sure there will be a boost next weekend. Keep in mind this week, we saw the debut of Cook, Beyonce, Nickelback, and Enya, I believe. Taylor Swift is going strong because her label has been pushing her album heavily. Not a surprise David wouldn’t be in top 10 with these new CDs, but I kinda expect a comeback for Thanksgiving weekend.

I didn’t have to deal with it, so while I was waiting for my stories to come in, and even though we are not suppose to go online with our work computers, I decided to check out what’s happening here at notingDavid and do some voting on VH1. Luckily I switched back to my work screen just as my boss came into my edit bay. He was the poor soul working on the breaking news. He comes up to me, lays his hand on my shoulder and says “I just needed to touch someone who is sane”. Can I address an elephant in the room amongst friends?
Everyone seems to be focused on sales numbers for our David vs Cook.
I think the reality of the situation is that Cook (rock) has a larger fanbase than David (pop). We can talk about conspiracy theories till we are blue in the face, but the reality is that the largest demographic of music purchasers are in the 20 to 30 age base which gravitates mostly to the rock genre (Cook). I don’t think there is any mystery as to why he won the popular vote on AI this year – rock music is popular and it sells.
I think that our David’s fans are very vocal, very loyal, very fanatic and very visible which may give us all the impression that we are larger than we truly are RIGHT NOW. *ducks head from being struck by incoming objects*
I believe there is a sort of transition period going on right now. David got the “wrap” of being “Ballad Boy” during AI and Jive and his new album most definitely proves that this was a totally short sighted observation, but changing people’s minds won’t happen overnight. Patience is required as the rest of the planet absorbs what they are hearing. I think that ALTNOY will take another step in a great direction of resolving the misconceptions about David Archuleta.
You are all familiar with me and my posts here. Nobody loves this kid more than me. I absolutely adore him and his gift.
Everyone has their own gauge to determine success. For some it’s sales, for others it’s charts (David LOVES charts!) and for others it’s simply what brings joy to your ears and soul.
I fall into the last category, but I’d be lying if I didn’t admit that I want him to kick a$$ in the other areas as well!
I am about to hit “submit comment”…..don’t hate me in my candidness…

Joner..honestly, you would be surprised how many of us realize some, if not all of the points you made are right on. So you will not be getting stoned by me. There’s still a lot of misperceptions about David and what he can do. There will be some people who will refuse to even give the album a listen cuz it’s by David, so he MUST get radio airplay..I just wish they would put out the songs that will catch the interest of the 20-30 yr old age base you’re talking about…songs like Desperate..I’m listening to that song right this minute..that song is as good as the best that Cook has put out..any of the bonus tracks. And remember, David is 17.and is just beginning. I don’t care how many cd’s Cook sells. Whatever. There’s only one thing I want right now, and that’s for Cook to introduce David’s Video at #1. So..
gotta go vote.. Joner..you are loved!

Joner, no need to duck for cover. It’s no secret that rock sells more than pop, or even in realizing that Cook was popular on AI for a reason. Does that mean the show didn’t manipulate things to get the results they wanted? Nope it doesn’t. That just proves a vote of no confidence (just like that time when RCA brought up the competition to drum up sales for Cook’s second single).
I also realize that there is a huge populace out there that thinks they’re “too cool for school,” meaning that they’re not going to take the David Archuletas of this world seriously. His age and his cuteness are a factor. But, I do think what sets us die-hard David freaks apart is that we see his vast potential. Others just see this cute kid who can sing, and that’s that. We see the road ahead and know where he could possibly go. Which is why many of us here have been very vocal about the direction Jive is taking him.
At times, it seems his label’s vision is just as shortsighted and as myopic as others.
I’d love for David to do incredibly well out the gate, but at 17, and as Rascal already said, at #2, this is not a bad place to be. Cook needs to triumph now, David not so much.

Moreover, I think David himself is aware of his image and how not everyone is going to find him “cool.” When he thanks his fans for accepting him just as he is, he means it, and he knows – in the age of edgy, badly behaving celebrity types – that who he is and what he represents isn’t going to be an easy sell. He himself is amazed to have a core fanbase that loves him and his talent and love him enough to support him in such strong numbers in sales and such. Since he is part of that Generation Y, who have been sold on a certain image of “cool” and what’s a “real rebel,” he would be surprised that enough people out there – of all ages, races, gender, etc. – really appreciate what he has to offer. It may not be as wide-reaching as we think, but it’s a solid enough start.

If David top the chart by this album, I will be disappointed. Don’t get me wrong, I like this album, because it is very 17, and I don’t think David is going to have another teen pop album. However it is far from his best.
I think David is never in competitve mode, he did his job, he satisfied with that, and that’s all. Numbers are interesting, but it never should be the reason you are willing to make an good album or the look-up-to.
I watched a Awards Presentation show last week, and I was very touched. Oh.. this Award presentation is full of manipulation. However, when I watched someone was awarded, everyone stood up to applaud / hugged him to celebrate, and took him 1 minute to go to stage… I think THIS is priceless!!!
Sales and Awards are interesting, and it is very important, because it “quantified” how appreciate we are to his hardworking, but it shouldn’t be the aim, otherwise, we will get lost.
Having said that, I will be very disappointed if the album is bad, or he performs bad.

SF – ghost mouse — 2 types you have the hardware & the software. The hardware is a model of the ghost buster logo designed for the mouse.See hereL http://www.fabstuff.net/images/prod/ghostWR.jpg
The software refers to an application that allows you to record and automate a sequence of mouse clicks on a Windows PC. To start the recording process, hit Record and start simulating the mouse movements you’d like the application to record. To replay the recorded sequence, hit Play. Hitting Play while recording will result in infinite replay.

HG 148 and Kizzi 153, tks for celebrating my cds with me!
Joner and HG, you’re both right about cd sales. People also seem to forget that the other guy has had a pre-order for his album since the end of AI and he certainly grabbed a big part of that huge audience with that.
I can’t wait for this chart watching phase to pass. Gosh! I wanna feel happy for David and his great debut album, but whenever I’m getting in the right mood I read something that puts me off a little. I’m talking about other fan sites where people seem to always find reason to be whiny. I’m beginning to hate this show and I hardly ever use the word hate. I definitely won’t watch this season.

Additional info – the use of Ghost Mouse can be detected IF the administrator of say a contest will check the log entries which will show a precise clocking of the votes coming in from a particular IP (that’s like the ID of your PC in cyberworld). Obviously, a person could never clock-in continuously and in the same perfect cadence — only a machine or a program can do that. So when detected, the votes can be disqualified.
I remember this when some 10 years ago, I sent out an email to the officers of my former company and they received like a hundred of teh same email from me. So the officers were mad cos they thought I was spamming them — I had no idea cos from mu end, I only sent 1 email. Our IT head had to step in and explain that it wasn’t spamming but probably a virus in the email system cos it was physically impossible for me to do it with such precision and length of time.

211 Joner, i agree w/your points esp. Cook having a larger fanbase among record buyers. When I attended the Idol tour, David received tremendous applause while Cook’s was beyond thunderous.
Let’s keep in mind too that a huge number of people watch Idol but they never end up purchasing a record by one of the contestants or even remember who the contestants were once the show is over.
While David may not have the largest record buying fanbase, people do remember who he was. He’s the most recognizable contestant from the season and he has become somewhat of a pop culture icon.
I don’t believe record sales and/or billboard charts will necessarily be the primary determinants of his success as an artist. For lack of a better phrase, I envision David becoming a well known, highly regarded, singing humanitarian.

SF on 221 — actually earlier last week, Light On figured in the Top20 which intrigued a lot cos it was an abrupt showing. Then in the final listing it wasn’t in. RUMOR has it that the ghost mouse technique was busted and the votes were not counted — but that was just a rumor. But I did see LO listed in the top20 during the voting period.

David has loads of charisma and personality. Aside from music and being a humanitarian, he’d be great in TV and movies. I thought he was fabulous doing the VH1 video playlist. None of the shyness we’ve become accustomed to seeing.

So I learn something new everyday. I had no idea what “ghost mouse” was, nor did I know there were rumors about it concerning the vote on AI. Like I’ve said before, certain people are invested in dominating charts (Cook, his fans, his label, his management). I think David’s priorities are very different, and so he sets the tone for how the rest of us will respond to these things (even though Archies will VOTE VOTE VOTE and BUY BUY BUY).
As long as David’s happy, it’s all good. And, as long as Jive doesn’t do anything really stupid (like, say, drop him in a year or 2), I’ll be patient.
BTW, JR, I’m loving that photo. Kathy is positively glowing! I don’t think I’ve ever seen her so happy; David’s light really does shine on others!

jr..I guess we’ll just have to wait & see what happens on VH1..to be honest, I wasn’t even aware that Cook was going to be on VH1 until I think sometime Tuesday. I just wanted David to stay at #1 for as long as possible. Then I heard Cook was the guest this Sat, and it was even more incentive to vote. If David’s video is #1 again, it’ll be interesting to see what Cook says about David & the video. I’m sure he’ll be complimentary, but I’ll be watching his body language and eyes…YOUR EYES DON’T LIE…where have I heard that?? Oh yeah, that what David sings SO WELL!
And that pic of David & Kathy…it looks to me like there’s mutual admiration goin’ on there! Another one bites the dust..or make that, another one has been sprinkled with Angel Dust!! hahaha! I’m so childish….

Looks like a very quiet night here tonight…and it’s time for me to say g’nite to whoever is still here…and for David…
(I know David doesn’t see this, but I hope he FEELS the love we send every night!).

Only my 4th post but felt a need to. I do so envy all who have the support (acceptance?) of their ODD. Mine is ODD+ partially unabated by lack of acknowledgement or weird looks by my family. Wouldn’t dare say how I feel our David is a gift from above. Nor how he’s inspired me to be a better person. Non judgemental & accepting of everyone. Fortunately it’s the VOICE (packaged inside that beautiful being – inside and out) that keeps me feeling hopeful. My prayer for David is to be happy – and that he is, right now. Hopefully his deflection instinct keeps all the negativity that seems to be flowing, away from his heart. He’s such a kind, generous & loving young man who so deserves only the best in life – success (defined by him, of course), friendships, partnerships, etc.
silverfox – feel a kindred spirit thing with you. You often post the same feeling, concern, likes, dislikes. I know you’ve retired for the nite but maybe you’ll see this post in the am. Love your perspective – keeping it light & in touch with reality. Like a taskmaster, in a good way. Thanks for the levity – you keep me cracking up.

Totally am with ya on the cold wake-up HG! GB WI is feeling a frickin’ monsta arctic blast.
I just saw this lil short news story on the LOGO channel. Not really all that interesting in itself, but the way they promoted it is what got me. It was all about ‘is America ready for a gay American Idol?’ They went on to show DC and DA with the slogan ‘Idle No Longer’ and then a split screen of DA and DC with the heading. Gay Idol?
Needless to say I watched, and basically the whole story was David Cook being thankful for his gay fans “funny what a haircut and forgetting to shave can do” (DC comment), and then his opinion on how gay rights today (or lack there of) in his opinion mirror civil rights in the sixties. I just thought it was kinda funny how they built it up throughout the whole show with clips of DA, but there wasn’t really anything about him.
Also, I went to the Jason Mraz concert last night in Milwaukee. It was really awesome! Just thought I’d add that.

hey JesseQ, how is ya? Oh..I see, like me, but for a different reason! And you’re COLD! me too! Who said KY is a “southern” state..isn’t the south supposed to be warm?? I’m MOVING!! (I say that every winter, like to FL or CA..but now I’m thinkin’ UTAH?? but it’s cold there too, so why would I be thinkin’ Utah??).

Freo, the fact that David was featured and that Logo did a “Gay Idol” episode is already proof that they know that.
SF, you wrote: “I also won’t pretend I’m like “oh well, 2nd is good or par for the course” cuz I’m really peeved!!”
Well, having gone on other forums, I discovered not only that Cook’s video is #1 (the day he’s a musical guest), but that this is the first time a music video ever debuted at #1 on the Top 20 countdown.
*cough rigged? cough*
On the bright side, I think it’s hilarious the way RCA will do anything and everything to make sure their David will forever trump ours. They are sooooooo not trying to have anybody say that the “wrong David won.”

Yesterday in our office, I could have lost my temper with some of our staff but ended up LOL instead. I was calling one of our staff from my room but everytime I call out her name, she would answer like “yeah, a-yeah, a yeah, a-yeah, yeah, yeah”.
After the 2nd attempt, I called out for another staff but got the same response. So I thought they were making fun of me cos obviously they were doing Crush.
So I went out and as I was about to to lose it, saw them both with their earplugs on! They were actually listening to DA’s album, singing Crush – so totally not hearing me call them! It was just that the timing was perfect – I call out and they yeah, a-yeah, a-yeah, a-yeah!

Regarding the Virtues of Two by Rascal. I love what you wrote. I don’t know if you are familiar with the anime Dragon Ball. The story of Goku, who is the ultimate fighter even though he is young, and his Master makes sure he didn’t win the Martial Arts tournament when he was small so he will not be proud to win at such a young age. The character remains innocent and humble throughout and I admire him… And he is not real. David Archuleta is the live version of Sun Goku. He is the greatest gift from God, imo!

It’s just not worth getting upset over..
I firmly buh-lieve in Karma..Cook had good karma for a short time, while he was around David..now he’s reverting to not so good karma. and what goes around, comes around. David on the other hand has very
GOOD karma in spades..David will be a Lasting influence in this world..who will remember Cook in 10 years? David’s fans are fans for LIFE. Cooks fans are fleeting and fickle, and will go to someone else next year, when a new “rock” singer comes along. There’s nothing really special about Cook..he can sing, when he’s not screaming..but David is SPECIAL beyond description. So let Cook have his moments..David will have years & years!

Brilliant remarks as usual, rascal!!! For those of us who “get” David, trivial matters such as sales ranking are relatively meaningless. We know that David has the talent to create a CD that would put him in the #1 position, but that day will surely come. When he has the freedom to release a CD that is truly representational of his true worth, David’s true genius will finally be made clear to the rest of the world. In the meantime, it is enough for me to enjoy what music he has presented. Any music released by David is far superior to anything else on the market today!

What that tells me is that the “cookies” did what they set out to do and were successful..whereas we were not sucessful in what we set out to do..I don’t feel any better about what I wanted..to have Cook introduce David’s video at #1. I was just as bad as the “cookies” were, so I’m not proud of myself. The votes for Cook are not there today, so the “cookies” don’t care about whether Cook is #1 on VH1 anymore. They did their job.

djb#277, I told myself I wasn’t going to use my comments space to criticize David Cook, but your post reminded me of something I found lacking in DC’s character. When I was standing in the fan line after the AI Sacramento show, all of the contestants (especially our David) were extremely accommodating and gracious. They all signed autographs and posed for hundreds of pictures, with one notable exception…David Cook. While he signed his fair share of autographs, he refused to have his picture taken with fans. He used some lame excuse like, “Oh, there just isn’t time to pose for all of the pictures, so I’m not posing for any,” even though all of the others had time to do it. That response really said something to me about Cook’s character. I really wanted to like Cook because I know David looks up to him so much, but I was really put off by this very arrogant attitude.

Hi everyone! I have been gone all day and just found out David was #2. That is still good, but what does not ring true to me is how a video is not even on the countdown the week before and all of a sudden takes the #1 spot? Hmmm…makes me think there is something to the ghost mouse software I have heard about. Some of the Cook fans are not known for being the nicest, honest people after all…or they would not be trying to cheat. The know David is nipping at Cook’s heels and have to resort to cheating…oh well…just another example of some of Cook’s fans out there.

Carollann – Our David had to do the same thing during tour on occasion when he had press to get to or another commitment or when the bus was getting ready to leave. In all fairness, Cook, as winner, had a LOT more press and commitments than anyone else.

I am very grateful to AI for exposing me to DA but ultimately I’m wishing now that David had been able to break through to prominence on his own. It irks me that David has to compete with Cook – whether he wants to or not. Even though we love David without strings attached and love and support him because we want to, you know the critics are waiting with bated breath to see how high Cook’s cd will debut. From what I’ve read on other sites – it seems a likely probability. I hope the next time he releases an album it will be without the shadow of Cook looming over him. I know we were caught up in extolling the virtues of David being #2 and I don’t wish to think competitively, but I find myself participating in this foolishness and feeling a disappointed that David was not #1 this morning. Coming in 2nd to someone else is somehow more palatable than coming in 2nd to Cook. I can only chalk this up to lingering disappointment from the traumatic AI finale. Am I making sense to anyone else about this? I feel like an idiot and should know better!

joymus 306 – I too slip into competitive mode once in a while. Eventually the AI comparisons will die down and with it the true emergence of talent for it’s own sake will be fully revealed. What will Cookie fans who support? the competition and do things to promote Cook now do when the media slows and finally stops the comparisons between the two David’s?
My support for David will be lifelong, and I believe everyone here at ND’s will also. I also try to think of it this way. With David being at the 2 spot it means less outside pressure for him and I think this is important for now, since he puts enough pressure on himself.

I’m sure this has been addressed in a previous thread but I was away from home (computer/internet access) right after David’s album came out. Since it takes me forever to try & catch up, I didn’t. While listening to David’s album, repeating Barriers, You Can & To Be With You, I got stuck on Somebody Out There. While listening to the words, tears running down my face a thought entered – this could so easily be put into a movie or tv series. The realization hit. It can’t because it no longer exists publicly. Thus I emailed iTunes about who determines the fate of songs & why? Not sure they’ll answer as they have yet to answer a single email. Would love to know, though.

Hey everybody! I was looking at that ASCAP list of David’s Album songs that JackRyan gave us and it says:
David co-wrote:
• A Little Too Not Over You
• Don’t Let Go
• Works For Me
David wrote entirely:
• Waiting For Yesterday
• Falling
• Let Me Go
I’d thought the only song David only wrote entirely was “Falling”. Can anybody confirm the info above? (I just don’t wanna go telling people he wrote something that he didn’t. Wanna get my facts straight.)
ALSO, do we know if David wrote (entirely or “co-”) “Somebody Out There”?
Thanks!

I didn’t vote on VH1 more than two or three times because in the back of my mind I knew that Cook would be #1. Truthfully I do the VH1 thing just to be a ‘good fan’ not because I think it really matters much. I haven’t watched Crush more than a dozen times….I don’t know if they cheated or just didn’t vote until they knew he would be on the show. Doesn’t really matter because how long will it last?
Of course they have alot more to prove because they are still worried about David breathing down Cook’s neck. It will be like that for a while now. I am not really competitive at the moment because I just know that in the long run David Archuleta will persevere and will be a force to be reckoned with. Cook has alot of people he will be compared to Daughtry, Nickelback, Hinder, etc. Our David really has a niche all to himself to grow, experiment, and thrive.
So maybe one again Cook wins a numbers race, let’s see where it shakes out say after cd #2. By then David will have toured the world, turned 18, settled into his celebrity. You see while David Cook has been out there for a while, recording on his own, and with a band, and honing his craft similarly to Taylor Hicks from season 5, David for all intents and purposes is a novice in the performance part of this craft. Considering he is a quick study, I think that they should be worried about him. Not enough to cheat, posssibly, but be worried yet the same.

We, the fans, do! We upload to You Tube and make the song available there and elsewhere. Power to the Internet! Power to the People! *raises fist in the air.*
Ebonyangel, thanks for those pix. He is just too adorable.
(((Joymus))), take heart. You’re among friends, and don’t forget: this competition is not important to David. It’s important to Cook and his label. They are so determined to make sure no one thinks the “wrong David won” that they’d do ridiculous things like make sure Cook’s video trumps David’s this week, even though David’s “Crush” has been #1 or #2 for the past few weeks, while Light On came out of nowhere.
And, while we knew David was going to appear at AMA on Sunday, now I’m understanding Cook will be presenting too? I hope they’re not trying to add him to the MACY’s Thanksgiving Day Parade as well (hoping Cook will think this is too cheesy for his “hard-rock” persona – rolling my eyes).

fandaforever…I think it’s Jive who made that decision. David co wrote that beautiful song and we, David’s fans can keep the buzz going about it by playing it whenever and wherever we can. Then when David does his solo tour, we can request that he sings this song. We have to show Jive that the “Have David’s Back Machine” will not rest til this song is re-released for purchase on itunes, as well as WORKS FOR ME which is only for purchase at Walmart. Both these songs were co-written by David! And all of David’s FANS FOR LIFE should be able to but them legally to enjoy them.

I don’t remember if the runner-up has ever been invited to present? Was Blake there last year, or Bo Bice or any runner up? I just don’t remember, but then, I wasn’t that interested in years past.
Sometimes, I forget that David did not “win” AI..he is everywhere, as if he actually did win. I know AZOFF schedules a lot of appearances, but the awards shows I buh-lieve are invitees. beebee, I too was confused about which songs David co-wrote. He spells it all out on his last alloy blog. In case you didn’t see it:
David says:
“I’m really glad that I got to write some songs for the album, too. I helped write two of the songs on the main album, which were “A Little Too Not Over You” and “Don’t Let Go.” They were both written pretty close to the deadline of having to have the album finished actually. I wrote “Don’t Let Go” with JC Chasez and Jimmy Harry, who wrote “Low” for Kelly Clarkson, and they were so cool to work with. “A Little Too Not Over You,” I wrote with Robbie Nevil, who wrote “One Step At A Time,” Mike Krompass, and Matthew Gerrard who wrote “Breakaway.” I also wrote one of the songs for the iTunes deluxe version called “Falling” and the Wal-Mart bonus track called “Works For Me.” I wrote “Works For Me” with Toby Lightman and Daniel Bedingfield, and that was actually really intimidating because they are both amazing singers. But they were really cool to work with, and I had a great time. I also took part in writing a song called “Somebody Out There,” but it was for pre-order on iTunes only. So five songs was a lot more than I ever expected than from the beginning, haha. But anyway, I kinda rambled off with that one.”

hello gorgeous #216
“I do think what sets us die-hard David freaks apart is that we see his vast potential. Others just see this cute kid who can sing, and that’s that. We see the road ahead and know where he could possibly go.”
Exactly. Bravo. Others, primarily younger people brought up exclusively on junk music, on junk TV, on junk politics, on junk food for the body, for the mind, for the soul, these poor, uneducated, uncultured, unknowing ‘Others’, except for those too young to be completely corrupted, cannot “get David”. We seasoned folk are able to see through the rot and the artifice that has, profitably for a few, passed as popular culture. And because our seasoning has given us a perspective that the young lack, we can, if we care, recognize true talent, true genius, true art. That age-correlated ability is the intellectual compensation which makes growing older tolerable because, as our physical capacities diminish, the one thing that permits us to want to continue to exist as sensate beings is that ability to better understand and comprehend, to discern between that which is true gold and that which is utter dross. Possessing that ability makes life worth living. That is the reason so many older fans have said that David has “changed my life” and “made listening to music a pleasure once again.”
Cook will do exceedingly well because there are so many poorly educated, ill-cultured, near-barbarians among his target audience, a core audience that prefers high decibels over high compassion, crudeness and rudeness over gentility and manners, nihilism over civilization. A recent survey was undertaken to discover the extent of the political knowledge of Americans, and the results were pitiful, embarrassing for our nation, and awfully sad.
http://www.newser.com/story/40140/most-americans-lack-basic-political-knowledge-survey.html
How can a populace so poorly educated discern what is real from what is illusion? Or what is valuable from what is lacking in value? What is good from what is bad? It is an indictment of our nation that our youth has been so neglected and, for want of better words, societally abused.
We who love the kid understand that his adult journey is only beginning, and because his talent is so outstanding, so transcending, we are prepared to endure the frustrating lapse of time that it will take for most of the benighted people, most of the time, to also respect and to also, perhaps, learn to love him as an artist for the ages.

I wanted to write this around 6 a.m. this morning after I woke up but I chickened out. I have gathered my courage now.
Rascal – I had a dream about you last night. How weird is that? I know next to nothing about you – certainly not what you look like. It was short and strange.
I was surrounded by about ten middle-aged women on a dock at a harbor I know not where.
They were all yelling at me to find that Rascal from NotingDavid. They were angry at me and you I think. I found you suiting up in some scuba gear. (I know, strange) I asked you what I should do to get rid of them but you told me not to let it bother me. You said you intended to take the day off and dive in and around some wrecks in the ocean. You were also laughing your ass off at them all.
Thats it – the whole dream.

I’d let that ASCAP list confuse me— it wasn’t ever presented as carved in stone or anything (obviously), just info gathering expedition on JackRyan’s part I believe — but it confused me bcz it did clearly list David, and only David under Waiting For Yesterday and Let Me Go as well as Falling. I got it straight now, tho (that is until and unless “the horse” speaks again…lol) Again, thanks.

Beebee & others who are confused my monitoring list will definitely confuse you if you use it now, after DA in a recent interview talked about which songs he had a hand on. Note that when that list was posted, previous releases indicated that the bonus tracks were from the 8 songs DA worked on the 2 weeks prior to production deadline.
As monitoring list – it is a work in progress. The title itself should clue you in — it is vs ASCAP. So items that have no ASCAP code, are therefore not yet registered and therefore not yet official and which I believe I have annotated clearly with color codes and highlights. The unregistered songs that has DA as writer in fact has question marks in it and ++ signs — which I believe ronaldsf even mentioned.
Not being defensive ok… just don’t other posters, esp the new ones get the wrong impression either.

And you will always be numero uno in our eyes!

Hey guys! I was out for the evening, and came back to see all the fun that was had. Has everyone retired?
Realmusiclover#328, *standing ovation.*
That was beautifully stated and so true! Thank you for the reminder that Cook’s primary audience are those “poorly educated, ill-cultured, near-barbarians … that prefer high decibels over high compassion, crudeness and rudeness over gentility and manners, nihilism over civilization” and, on top of that, couldn’t identify our Secretary of State or the British PM. Pitiful!
When you put it like that, we should be proud these uneducated masses can’t see past the artifice and recognize David for the genuine talent and artist he is. At this point, I just need him to keep making music (and for his label to not confine him to some superficial persona that doesn’t capture his vast potential).
Speaking of which: JR, thanks for that new link, but if this is indeed Jive’s official site, it seriously sucks! Is that the best they could do for our David? Honestly! The visual design and layout is just wrong…it commits the worst offenses in web design (I’ve taken quite a few classes, so I know what I’m talking about).
Sigh. And this is why the music industry is so behind in our digital information age. If you can’t even put together a cutting edge website, how can you possibly stay ahead of the curve? They should be inventing new digital media to get music out there, not playing catch up.
MIT just received an enormous grant to completely re-invent how we watch cinema by incorporating an interactive component. It’s a project called The Future of Storytelling.
This is the direction the music industry needs to be going, if they want to maintain their relevance.
Forgive my impatience, everyone. It’s just that, now that David is part of that industry, I want them to have the vision to know how to capitalize on and magnify his talents, and part of that vision is knowing how to market him for our digital age. David should not be restricted because the folks who are responsible for getting his voice and his music out there don’t have a clue.
Betsy, what a trippy dream! I was wondering where Rascal has been; didn’t realize he was busy scuba-diving!

Realmusiclover, you’re welcome! Thanks for the kind words.
OK, I know Cook’s not our favorite person, but I found this interview on reuters (he mentions David, this time without being condescending, and he says he’ll be touring in Iraq!! This is definitely a first for an idol winner, I believe!):
http://www.reuters.com/article/lifestyleMolt/idUSTRE4AJ3DF20081120
So, I’m beginning to understand why they needed a Cook win. Somehow, Cook gives the show a credibility that David might not (since David, as we’ve established here, is still only viewed as a cute Disneyesque singer). AI has already proven it can produce multi-platinum-selling pop stars. Having a “rock” music artist (who’s all rugged and cool enough to sing for our troops) gives the show the illusion that any old Joe Regular can win. And, especially, they need to drum it in that Joe Regular can go up against a gorgeously voiced, strikingly beautiful youthful teen heart throb and win!
Why else are TPTB so concerned to not only continue the Battle of the Davids but to make sure their David wins?

juliebug#304, I did not mean to sound too harsh regarding David Cook. I realize he has more press commitments, but he was in the line the same amount of time as our David and it just seemed strange to me that Cook could not be a little more accommodating. I’m sure he is a very nice person in his own right, and didn’t mean to be rude.

HG – I know what you mean by the look of that website. It was difficult for me to hold my tongue on that note cos…. well I also design websites and I dunno why they chose an outdated, basic template
Am sure a lot of David’s fans can work up something a thousand times better. In fact, if I were Jive or Azoff, I would have held a contest for the website design from fans given that clearly it is not their forte and that it has been proven that fans would take considerable effort to produce something worthy of their Idol.
Have you seen the web of The Killers? The ones of Jason Mraz, Chris Brown’s? Or even that of Taylor Swift’s are better than this — at least hers reflects her projected image. Kanye West is cool, too! All them have movement, dynamism, youthful… oh well

JR, I checked out those websites (Kanye’s and Jason’s are awesome!) and they just make me want to cry at the inferior quality of David’s. Granted, Chris Brown’s isn’t that much different from David’s, so maybe it’s just a flaw on the part of their label. But at least Chris’s looks more balanced.

I was looking through quotes I have saved over time as I prepare a presentation and I was struck by several as they relate to David.
“If your actions inspire others to dream more, learn more, do more and become more, you are a leader. ” John Quincy Adams
“Few men have the natural strength to honor a friend’s success without envy.” Aeschylus
I was reading from H. Jackson Brown’s “Life’s Little Instruction Book” (again looking for inspirational information for a presentation I am writing) and it struck me from this list how many of the homilies he lists David actually manifests:
“1. Marry the right person. This one decision will determine 90% of your happiness or misery.
2. Work at something you enjoy and that’s worthy of your time and talent.
3. Give people more than they expect and do it cheerfully.
4. Become the most positive and enthusiastic person you know.
5. Be forgiving of yourself and others.
6. Be generous.
7. Have a grateful heart.
8. Persistence, persistence, persistence.
9. Discipline yourself to save money on even the most modest salary.
10. Treat everyone you meet like you want to be treated.
11. Commit yourself to constant improvement.
12. Commit yourself to quality.
13. Understand that happiness is not based on possessions, power or prestige, but on relationship with people you love and respect.
14. Be loyal.
15. Be honest.
16. Be a self-starter..
17. Be bold and courageous. When you look back on your life, you’ll regret the things you didn’t do more than the ones you did.
18. Take good care of those you love.
19. Don’t do anything that wouldn’t make your Mom proud.”

#328 realmusiclover – MasterClassLady wrote a while back that David is really a “classical” singer in his delivery.
It is my hope that the masses will appreciate his artistry in whatever form it is delivered and that may prove to be a slow, evolving process over years or decades, but I think the beauty of his voice impacts our humanity at a cellular level; I believe that it awakens something inside of us, whether we recognize it or not, and we respond (and I’ll admit I fought my response for some time.) Some respond with love, others with hate–he has highly a polarizing effect. I think that is why some diverge into comparisons with the divine or with deeply disturbing, hateful responses as his impact is difficult to explain from everyday experiences. For one not to react to the magnificence of his voice when he sings, is to be artificially anesthetized in some manner to the beauty of life.

Kizzi 377 – I agree with what you say. Those who love David accept that they respond to David without having to know why they respond (though we do try to figure this out don’t we). I would venture to guess that those who hate David do not accept their response to David because they cannot figure out why they respond OR do acknowledge their response but are SCARED of it; therefor they hate.
Many people respond poorly when something makes them feel deeply, as David does. Feelings sometimes just cannot be quantified, they just must be felt and accepted on a primative level.

Kizzi —– I so enjoyed reading your 2 previous posts 376 and 377
I am amazed by how many of the quotes and points relate to David….
For one not to react to the magnificence of his voice when he sings, is to be artificially anesthetized in some manner to the beauty of life.—- beautifully said.
My greatest hope for David is that he is recognized/accepted for his outstanding talent— I guess I was silly to imagine with this his first album he would awaken the masses. I wanted so much for the all the doubters to say “Aha I get it now….” But I am beginning to see that this might be a long journey ….. which is just fine.. I am in for the long haul.
I so enjoy coming here to feed my Archuleta appreciation…thank you!

I guess with Thanksgiving looming, I am feeling especially grateful as I look at all that I have in my life. We have a family tradition on Thanksgiving of writing down what we are most thankful for, put it in a basket, and then we draw randomly and read what another wrote as we sit around the Thanksgiving dinner table. This year I have to include David’s artistry and NotingDavid in my list of thanks–amazing journey, isn’t it!

As usual, a lot of wonderful posts from the wonderful David fans. Because of the amount of time I give to all things David (since Shop Around) and particularly the huge chunk of time spent here at notingDavid which used to be spent doing something else, I tried to rationalize or rather justify the fact that I read less nowadays or do some of the other things. I made the realization that I get energized, stimulated, inspired, and amused on a daily basis by the NDers. What a TREAT! It is no different from reading an extremely interesting book, except that this is interactive too! How cool is that?!

TOfan #385: Don’t know why, but I feel like I know you…hmmm. Anyway, I think #1 on the list is manifest by how he is approaching a serious relationship.

Don’t forget American Music Awards tonight on ABC, 8/7c–David is presenting; and Red Carpet broadcast is 7/6c tonight.
Warning – Cook is performing on the Red Carpet prior to the show.
An aside: The promotion of Cook has been amazing to me–USA spread on the first page of the ‘Life’ section the day his album debuted; segments of his video of ‘Light On’ aired during commercials with Saturday College Football games over the last several weeks, and more. With that kind of promotion of what 19E must consider a mainstream artist, his sales would have to be high.
Makes me feel so very proud how well David sold with the limited promotion he had. The future is still David’s to create–very invigorating and exciting.

Hi all-
Life is crazy. Friday night ninaf and I met for the first time and went to a Bob Dylan concert in NYC (which was incredible- I’d waited 25 years to see him.) I loved the whole evening. I really looked forward to going on a “blind date” with an ODDer I met “online”. LOL. The concert was crazy! I Loved it, loved it! What was equally nuts was that we really hit it off- as if we were already friends- very relaxed and really enjoyed each other’s company.
Then, last night, my friend of 24 years died and I spent the night and day with his inconsolable wife. When I finally left to drive home I spent a moment thinking- do I want to listen to Dylan, the poet laureate of rock who moves me like the poet that he is, … or to David Archuleta who just makes me happy?…. I picked David …… and his voice made me happy. When I got home I logged-on to ND just to see what all the crazies were chatting about …. laughed at the chipmunks video …. smiled at you all (especially betsy’s grandson) …. it’s all good … thanks again….

Bluebarsa,
Having Cook appear right after David is the type of action I ranted about earlier. This competition may NEVER end. On a humorous note – my Dad watched DC perform and said – “I prefer the other Little David!” (Granted he’s been exposed to DA’s music for the past week so he may be biased), but… seriously, I DID NOT prompt or bribe him to make that comment. David’s voice just grows on you no matter what.
