I Want to See David Here

Reading of the reaction by musicians to the $159 million, 22-month upgrade of Alice Tully Hall, part of Lincoln Center’s $1.2 billion renovation, I couldn’t help but long for the day when David will be recognized and appreciated for his vocal genius (and when the music he selects and writes conforms more closely to this dimension of his talent), and be invited to perform in places that cater to those who will by that time crave the kind of Archuexperience such venues offer.
I quite realize that those days are years away. David must surely cultivate his peer audiences (I guess), and have some fun exploring “who he is as an artist.” When his artistic oats sowing reaches its denouement, a singular focus will remain: The Voice.

Rascal! Nice to hear from you! My response to your commentary: and I hope at that time that this cougar-age fan is healthy enough to be in audience at such a show.
Josie, wanted to comment on one of your last comments in the Inaugural thread: you are so cute that I want a poster of you WITH David for my wall. Glad you got your w/d and glad you get to take your mom to the show. All is well in my Archuletafanworld today.

Hey Rascal! Thanks for the new thread! You are one hard-working guy. You have been missed.
I too am looking forward to the day when David comes into his own. Not as a pop star or teen idol. This journey we are all privileged to take with him will not end there. Somewhere down the road is a stage worthy of the Voice, fully realized. I hope I am around to witness that event and the adoration and applause he is destined to recieve the world over. I know in my bones, I did not contract a full-blown case of ODD for less than what will one day be described as the unsurpassed singer of our time. So I will go to every concert I can and love them all, and deal with the screams and being shoved in moshpits. For at the end of this restless road lies a magnificent stage. A hall filled to capacity. An expectant hush. And then…
Ladies and Gentlemen____Mr. David Archuleta.

David Archuleta at Lincoln Center: that’s music to my ears! I’ve thought about it many times! One day soon!!!
And about that poster…nothing wrong with hanging it in my laundry room, is there? I mean next to the two other posters I already have hung up of others that I have at one time gone fangirly over in the past few years. Okay, I’ll call it my Wall of Men and be done with it. haha Good reason to do laundry!

Rascal, one day David will be there! I get chills just thinking about it. Remember finally night and how beautiful his voice sounded. He was soaring and nobody could touch him, it was all about David! The great thing about this solo tour is that we get to see him in a club scene performance. I used to go to the LA clubs and just loved seeing the LA bands play. There is nothing like it, the experience is just amazing and I can just imagine how THE VOICE will sound.

Wonderful thoughts for the future rascal and I don’t believe that it will be long before he is there…look at his past…
I was watching carefully for notification for presale tickets for Virginia Beach and saw nothing…Fortunately there has been a code word given for some presales by people here who have our backs…so to speak…and I appreciate that very much!!! I tried it today and presto…there were the tickets…the higher priced ones gone but it is a great place and his first historical appearance…
I had a look at ebay and some tickets are already around $175.00 or so for two…I wonder how many will show up on ebay for the Sandler Center after Friday…I bought two tickets and received row R…then two minutes later the best were row…V…Nice to have pretty good seats when we will be flying and driving for a day to get there…

Hey! rascal..glad to see you, if only just so you can give us a glimpse of what you wish for David and what we know will happen..in a few years. My favorite part of your post are these words…
“David WILL be recognized and appreciated for his vocal genius and be invited to perform in places that cater to those who will by that time crave the kind of Archuexperience such venues offer”. **sigh**
I think David has already written music that conforms to the dimension of his talent. He just hasn’t acquired the confidence yet to share. Shades of this is his “Somebody Out There”. Yes, he had “help” but he brought the song to LIFE. He can and has written songs like SOT..I just feel it!
He will never see or hear in himself what we see & hear and he may never understand why so many older people are so “into him”. Maybe that’s one of the reasons we are so “into him”!
Angelica..Yes, I got {{{chills}}} too!
“Ladies & Gentleman….David Archuleta, THE VOICE!”
And YES, we have to keep the Private Concert dream alive..cuz dreams DO come true!

{{{Rascal}}} you have been missed! I’ve only experienced Lincoln Center via PBS but it seems perfect for that ideal Archuexperience you speak of.
I have a feeling that, eventually, David won’t need to tour — we’ll just all flock to wherever he prefers to sing, whether it be NYC, La Scala in Milan or a custom-built acoustically exquisite venue in Murray…. hmm, maybe they’ll need a sound tech…

Rascal, so good to hear from you! You were missed.
As I read all of the comments today, I can just say “ditto” because all the sentiments expressed apply to me too. My husband comments from time to time that in the 30 plus years he has known me, I have never been so crazy about a singer. He’s right. David’s imperfections make him even more perfect. The song My Funny Valentine has a line that says: don’t change a hair for me, not if you care for me. That line sums it up for me. I hope I will be able to watch David and his career blossom over the coming decades.

I tried getting tickets in Pomona ( a good excuse to visit my sisters), and it kept saying that what I am looking for is not there. When is the competition FINALLY going to be over? Or will it ever?
And did David say he hasn’t been approached to be a guest on AI? Not yet, anyway? And if he isn’t invited? Will David’s die-hard fans continue to support the show by watching it twice a week? Well, if he is FINALLY invited..that will be the second time I’ll have watched..the first was the Louisville auditions..which was a waste of time for me..no one even came close to being on David’s level..and no one ever will..Thank you very much!
I am happy the David’s tour seems to be geared to his ADULT fans..I know there will be plenty of tweens & young teens at some of the venues..but most of the venues are bars and will be selling alcohol, not all, but most. And they are not all “pretty” venues either..they are moshpit types, and look dumpy in the daytime. I know David will gain many new young adult fans after seeing David in concert. There’s gonna be some OMGoshes! or more likely HOLY Sh%T! at all the venues by those who haven’t seen David in person in concert expect the “little guy from AI”.. SURPRISE!!
As for a band..I know that some newcomers who don’t have a regular band, hire local top musicians from each city to back them in concert. The musicians hired get the sheet music to practice, then on the day of the concert, the artist & musicians do a rehearsal & sound check..and it works. The are so many excellent musicians in just about very city who make their living by backing performers in concert. So anyway, maybe this is what David will do if he doesn’t have a regular band assembled…I guess we’ll see come Feb 24th!
I just bought tickets for my sis & I for the Grand Sierra Theater in Reno! Can someone please explain to me what the heck I am doing?? But I’m flying to NM anyway,
to see David in a moshpit..may as well go a little further
and see him in a “pretty” venue..actually it looks beautiful! Hope David is staying at the resort as well…hmmm, They have elevators there too…
I dunno what I’m doing? He’s got me goin’ in circles..

He is in an episode of ‘iCarly’ thats going to be on February 7th so we filmed a Teen Nick special together. The special is called ‘Crush Night’ and all the episodes of shows on Nick that night are going to be crush themed! Not only did David host the night with me but he also performed his hit song ‘Crush’! He was seriously amazing! I couldn’t believe how great he was and I’m glad I voted for him so many times when he was on ‘American Idol’ haha. Dear rascal..in case you check in on us, I want to say..
So glad you came home for a while. I think you have so much you want to say about David’s concert tour, all the Florida promos, 5 now, ( which I’m stumped about..but what do I know.) And the Crush nite thingy and the iCarly TV appearance..I am so interested in your insights about what’s going on with David. I wonder if you’re agreeing with everything AZOFF has had David doing or not..methinks not..BUT I may be wrong, so why don’t you take a little more time off from the rigors of hard work & come give us more of your wondrous wisdom and insights on David’s professional life and if you feel he’s being guided in the right direction? Are you smiling or frowning?? Are you happy or sad for David at this time in his life. I imagine you’ve been on a hectic work schedule, working hard. But we really miss you! There are times when we don’t even know what to post but we post anyway, cuz we NEED this place, we need your warm house, our home away from real life. Where we are all of one mind..our love, hopes & dreams for David The Voice. And we need YOU, our WORD GURU! We need to share the excitement we feel about seeing David in concert again..not exactly THE LINCOLN CENTER yet..but it’s a start…What I’m trying to say with my rambling is..we MISS you
and hope we don’t have to go 2000 posts this time before you come home again!
Goodnight everyone! For David..
Dear Lord, Though we are unworthy to ask,
Please take Care Of David. Watch over him, Protect him from all harm. Cloak him with your love and give him the strength to endure all that is thrown in his path. Give David the courage and guidance to say no to those who ask for more than he can reasonably give. Surround David with loving and supportive people who love him UNCONDITIONALLY as we, his ARCHANGELS do. Separate David from those who have agendas other than for his well being. Give him rest when he’s weary. Give him stamina to sustain his hectic pace. Give him assurance when he feels doubt. Give him joy when he feels sad. Cloak him always in your protective arms. Keep David healthy & strong as he fulfills his Destiny which was written in his Book of Life before he was born.
Though we may be unworthy, we humbly pray.
Amen.
Sweet dreams! Be safe & secure in our love always! Take care. You will always be numero uno in our eyes! Thank you for all you do and for just being you!

My 14 year old daughter is having a Superbowl party this Sunday (15-20 friends) and guess what they’ll be playing…yes! You guessed it~ Apples to Apples!
One more thing: When my kids have parties, we usually keep a marker by the cups and have the kids write their name, draw a picture or somehow personalize their cup, so we don’t end up with a sea of half empty cups around the house.
Anyway, my daughter decided that she would pre-mark stacks of cups with names of famous entertainers. Guess whose name is on one of those cups!

Hi everybody. I haven’t forgotten about you, and my love and respect for our 18 year old friend is still alive and well. I too look forward to the day when David can perform at the top of his skill at a venue like this. Unfortunately, that day is probably a few years away. Had David been born 60 years ago, when music was sung by adults, for adults, and the “record” buying public was not dominated by teenagers, he would already be the respected singer he will eventually become.
Everything changed in the mid ’50s, when the baby boomers were becoming teenagers and could afford to buy a record by Elvis, the Platters, or Fats Domino. The target audience was no longer Mom and Dad, it became
their kids. The singing stars were no longer Eddie Fisher
and Jo Stafford. It was Elvis, Ricky Neslon, Annette, Fabian, and Danny and the Juniors.
No one loved those days more than I did. I saved up my 88 cents and ran down to the Melody Music Store on White Plains Rd. in the Bronx where I grew up and bought the latest .45.
Now, it’s 2009, and we have David Archuleta causing all this commotion and people not quite knowing what to do with him. He’s young, he’s cute, and he sings like there’s no tomorrow, but he’s not like the other singers of his generation. He looks like Bobby Vee, but he sings like Vic Damone, only better. He makes grown men like me weep, and grown women , well, you know….
The media is at a total loss because they can’t pigeon-hole him, which makes them nervous. I anxiously await the future for David. He has weathered the storm of 2008 with grace, humour, and a maturity that cannot be described. His talent and appeal is Elvis-esque already, and he appears to be immune to the seediness of the music industry.
This solo tour should propel him to the next level and get him closer to where he and all of his true fans want him to be. For me, it’s more songs like “Somebody Out There”, and more of his original compositions. I don’t care how young he is or how cute he is. Speaking for myself, it’s still all about his magnificent singing and his healing , joyous heart.

This is really difficult for me trying to communicate to others in different time zones. Am always late to the Ball – usually after everyone has gone home (to bed). If possible, would love to hear others perspective on attending concerts – esp the mosh type. Do you show up early in the am for the pm show? Are souvenir type items (programs, posters, whatever) available to purchase or should one purchase in advance? If so, where? I’ve seen someone mention posters (to display on the ceiling). This is just so exciting; not sure what to expect, though. A little help for someone’s first time.
Does anyone know if tickets to Tempe, AZ are available on presale? If so, where? how? when? I think it would kill me if I missed this opportunity – HELP, please?

January 30th, 2009
111 5:16 am
Hey fandaforever! I’m up early – woke up from a dream (don’t remember the details except that David wasn’t in it) and decided to go online.
When I went to the Albany show, I showed up an hour before the first act was to perform. Because David was the last act, I decided not to show up hours earlier than I needed to. But in a general admission type setting, I would make that decision based on whether or not you have to be close to the stage. If you want to be right by the stage, show up hours in advance, because, yes, the tweens and teens are definitely going to be camping out.
At the Albany venue, CDs and posters were sold, but mostly of the other acts – not David.
Things might be different since David is the main act? Depends on how organized each local venue is.
Bliss! So cool to hear from you again. You’re right. Music (at least pop music) hasn’t been the same since the baby boomers proved their marketing viability since the teen years.
But, does that mean David has to be a “teen star”?
I’m going to go back to Rascal’s point. Reading between the lines – you know how I am about subtext
– should I assume that you’re none too pleased with all this iCarly (’cept they do make a really cute couple! Davinda FTW!!) and solo tour stuff?
David must surely cultivate his peer audiences (I guess)…
I hear what you’re saying. I mean, I completely get why this is the path Jive/Azoff are taking with regards to David’s career. But I do think this is failure of imagination on the part of his label since, as Bliss pointed out, “we have David Archuleta causing all this commotion and people not quite knowing what to do with him.”
I go back to what I once said, in which I hope David will eventually emerge as a male version of Alicia Keys with broader appeal. David is a wonderful mix of multiple identities – Latino, Mormon, teenager who appeals to tweens/teens, teenager who appeals to mature adults, a singer of pop tunes yet a singer of “soul.” A creative and imaginative label/manager should have a field day in plotting out his musical trajectory.
But all I see going on are “safe” choices. Which, understandably in an economy that’s going belly up, I get the rationale for safety, but that’s not going to work. Believe it or not, when things are looking pretty bad, now is the time for risk-taking, not safety. David is a very unique artist, and an imaginative person should be able to craft an exciting career for one such as he.
This is David, who’s got older women (and men) paying airfare and hotel (in a crashing economy no less!) to see him live – even when they’ve seen him live on numerous occasions. This is David, who inspired a popular artist like Natasha Bedingfield to kiss him on TV and who’s got pop icons like J-Lo calling him her “Other Man.” I’m sure we realize all this isn’t just because he’s a young cute guy. I mean, he is, but when he opens his mouth to sing … he kills it! And he kills us!
That kind of mad talent is definitely worthy of gracing a $2-billion-dollar venue like the Lincoln Center. We die-hard David Archuleta fans already know this. I guess we (at least Rascal?) just need confirmation from the folks who’re managing him that they too know this.
Good (early) morning everyone!

Alot of interesting & intriguing articles/threads (?? not sure of the correct online verbage, yet). You are so articulate & able to simply get the point across.
Don’t think I need to be up front with the tweens/teens but did you position yourself off to ones side or just in the back. My vision isn’t the best though I’m sure just hearing the Voice live will be all I need. Just wouldn’t want the distraction of any background noise like at Sundance. Then I might have to start pushin my way up front – just kidding of course. Though not petite, I am only 5′2″. Wouldn’t want to get buried by the taller average height fans either.

Hi Morning All,
HG it IS too early in the morning and I am getting dresses for work but to some extent – the blame for this goes both ways – David and us
I say this because the trajectory we have for David is not necessarily the one he sees for himself. For one – Davod still doesn’t fully GET what we love about his talent. He still hears himself as a weasy, gaspy talent while our experience is of tears, chills and goosebumps. He hopes “to sing like Marc Anthony some day” while its the other way around. MA should only hope the one day he can sing and be as charismatic as David.
So for me – it begins with the man in the mirror. David needs to learn that talent-wise he is worth SO much more than a pop act. I mean he IS really the total package – looks to die for, a voice to make grown folks weep, and a personality…….OMG…..his charismatic personality is off the charts. ANYONE who meets him – simply wants more – Charise, Miranda, Shontelle, Lady Gaga………….And So It Goes
My question to all this is can they promote what he may not want for himself as yet? I am sure David has some say in all this promotion. I do not think he is a total puppet. Does he even believe that HE is worth a Carnegie, Lincoln or in a strip mall?

Fandaforever, my 11 year old concert buddy pushed her way through the crowds (it was amazing to watch how she negotiated her way closer to the stage), while I followed, then chose a position toward the side of the stage and close to the sound system (that’s why the audio on my vids are so clear) since it was near the exit door. It was all good.
Joymus, I agree with you that all this starts with “the Man in the Mirror” (how much do you wanna bet David loves this song too?). And if I ever got to meet David in person, I would give him a playlist featuring an “amazing vocal genius that he soooo has to listen to” (and if he plays my playlist, he’ll be stunned to discover it was a complete David Archuleta playlist). Seriously, if he actually listened to himself sing, he might get what all the fuss is about! ha ha!
I wanted to tell him, when he said of Jim Morrison on his blog, “I didn’t know white people could sing like that!” I guess you really don’t hear yourself, do ya’ hon?
So, yeah, I agree David also needs to get on board with the rest of us in recognizing his greatness. That wouldn’t make him an egotistical “diva,” but it would certainly allow him to know his true worth.

There is a remarkable unity of expressions and experiences found here that helps me accept my ODDness for this extraordinary soul called David. I live in northeastern NC and will be going to the VA Beach performance and I am bringing two friends with me who have never seen THE VOICE. I was not able to go to the Charlotte, NC show last year and I didn’t know if I would ever have another chance to see David in concert. But, now, WOW! If there are NDers going to the Va Beach performance and would like to meet me and my friends, give me a shout. We will be in center orchestra, row H…Good things really do come to those who wait.

So nice to hear from you again, Blisskasden. I agree 100% with everything you said about David. That’s part of the problem the media has with him; they don’t know what to do with him, how to label him and I don’t think Jive knows, either. Because he’s a handsome, talented teenage boy a lot of people write him off as a passing teen idol whose fans (almost all female) will eventually outgrow him and that will be the end of him. But we all know that David is ANYTHING BUT. He’s here to stay. How many 18-year-old singers had many fans who were old enough to be their mothers? Not many! There is just something about David that we all love, it goes beyond his looks, his personality, is youth, his talent. Jeff said in an interview this summer that music has many levels beyond what we hear and that David connects on a spiritual level and when he sings a song he “connects” with (such as “Imagine”) what is happening is that his spirit is communicating with our spirits and making listeners “feel” what the song is about and that this gift of “connection” (and it is a gift) has been present in David since he was around six years old. He doesn’t strive for it; it just happens. That’s why Paula was in tears after “Imagine,” that’s why the country sat up and took notice of David and the publicity began. I’ve been listening to music for 50 years and have many favorite artists–Patsy Cline, John Denver, BeeGees, Frank Sinatra, Linda Ronstadt, Karen Carpenter, Barbra Streisand, Nat King Cole, Ella Fitzgerald, Celine Dion, Motown artists and the Beatles, to name a few. But NONE of them makes me feel the way David Archuleta does. Once David gets to you, you are hooked for life and I feel honored and priviledged to have come across him and been “singled out” for ODD. My sister-in-law likes him but doesn’t feel the same way I do. So us “David lovers” are a chosen bunch and eventually I think the rest of the world will catch on. For everyone that knows who David is, there’s millions more that don’t. I am saddened that Cook’s CD is still high on the charts while David’s dropped but I have to remember that 99% of the people that purchase his CD are females (whereas boys and girls buy Cook’s music) and that many fans aren’t even buying CDs anymore–they downloading all the music. I hope the Archuletas are making some money on the sales and the personal appearances because things aren’t easy in the music industry nowadays. David is slowly winning people over and hopefully this upcoming tour will help. I am thrilled to be able to go and see him in Richmond on 25 Feburary. I would have preferred Virginia Beach but I have a class that night, it’s 25 miles more to drive and the tickets weren’t going on sale until today at 11 a.m. and I won’t be home and I’m afraid they might sell out before I can get back to my computer at 9 p.m. tonight. Richmond had a pre-sale and for $35, I think it go the best deal. I just saw Celine Dion and it cost me almost $100 (like she needs the money!) and I couldn’t even sit through the whole concert because I had to be up at 4:45 a.m. the next morning! I have found no other DA fan on any website who is going to Richmond but I am so looking forward to the trip as I never leave the area at all and I’m going to be surrounded by people who feel as I do. We are truly one of a kind.
Rascal, sorry I stayed away so long. I really love your website, it’s one fo the best.

“In this trying economy..I feel guilty when I call Ticketmaster for tickets, call the travel agency for the best flights, etc..I think to myself..what the heck am I thinking? And I do it anyway! If I was 30-40 instead of 60..I may think twice..but at the end of the day, life’s too short and getting shorter for me..so I am going for it!”
You reminded me of one of my all time favorite songs: I Hope You Dance by Lee Ann Womack…here’s a piece of the lyrics
I hope you never fear those mountains in the distance
Never settle for the path of least resistance
Living might mean taking chances
But they’re worth taking
Lovin’ might be a mistake
But it’s worth making
Don’t let some hell bent heart
Leave you bitter
When you come close to selling out
Reconsider
Give the heavens above
More than just a passing glance
And when you get the choice to sit it out or dance
I hope you dance
(Time is a real and constant motion always)
I hope you dance
(Rolling us along)
I hope you dance
(Tell me who)
I hope you dance
(Wants to look back on their youth and wonder)
(Where those years have gone)
I hope we all choose to dance

The talk of the concert reminds me that I need to head to a sporting goods store and get my good hunter’s earplugs to block out the other act just in case it sounds like a bunch of noise compared to David. Seriously, though, if the other act is very loud, I will need ear protection as I find the volume level uncomfortable at many concerts. But I’ll remove said earplugs for David!

And they think that why?
Because fans are hopping on planes and driving long distances in the snowy Northeast and elsewhere to see David?
Because every celebrity site has David’s Tour featured up front and other major stars further down on the site?
Because the venues are getting inundated with calls and emails from people with David Archuleta questions?

OK…Here I go again, stirring the pot.
As always, let me begin by saying that I LOVE DAVID ARCHULETA, that I firmly believe he has a wonderful gift and that I understand the great devotion that the ND fans have for him. BUT…
I, for one, have a lot of trouble with the way many NDers view Archie’s (and his Peeps) choices about his career. Even though, I am sure, that David loves his mature fans we are not his prime target. If we were then his first album would have been full of ballads and Adult contemporary sounds. David wants to relate to KIDS his own age. He wants to be a POP STAR! He wants to grow up with his generation, not be a member of ours. He could have followed the Josh Grobin, or Michael Buble path but he chose not to. He tried, so many times on idol, to infuse his performances with young relevant Pop Sounds. My favorite performance is still “Shop Around” and that was the Archie that he really wanted to be…not the David that got saddled with the description of great balladeer.
In the music industry there is a long history of very successful entertainers that matured with their OWN GENERATIONS. Those who continual changed their songs and performances as they aged. Why is it that we are uncomfortable with allowing David to conduct his career the same way? Frank Sinatra, Elvis, the Beatles all started by singing for the bubble gummers. As they matured their songs became more “Adult”. As they matured their songs became more introspective. Their “core” audience grew up with them and they were still able to attract an ever expanding growing fan base.
Nothing David does, no choices he makes are “beneath” his abilities. He isn’t sabotaging his own career by starting as a Pop Singer. Each tour, each album, every future song will be different, more mature, more confidant. I’m happy to be along for the ride.

Tess #139 I don’t don’t most of us want David to be a Josh Groban or to miss growing with his own generation. I think we just don’t want him to get labeled and boxed in as a “pop-cutie” when his talent is deeper than that. Young celebrities have a particularly hard time growing out of their initial image.
I love David’s pop sound, his whole album. I also want him to have the freedom to develop his own style. So, I’m not so much in a hurry for it, just want to know that as he grows and matures, he will be allowed to break out of the mold – because he is capable of it. We’ve already seen him rework a song and make it into something unique. I just want him to have all the freedom to continue to put his own spin on his music and to be taken seriously by the music world.

Tess – #139:
You are interpreting our desire for a more individual approach to David’s musical and career choices as something generational. We are not making that distinction, you are. No one here has ever said that David should start singing the American songbook standards, or that he should select music similar to Josh Groban or Michael Buble — indeed and in fact, those of us here who share these views rejected outright and early any such comparisons of either style or career direction to those artists. Furthermore, no one here is against the idea that David should cultivate his peer audience. Our issue is that he should do it on his own terms, as a unique and individual artist, and not–as it appears Jive wants—as this year’s standard, middle-of-the-road pop fare performer. Our position on his peer group is that they are on the whole more sophisticated than the conventional, bottom-line focused music industry gives them credit for. Our view is that David is being too limited by the frameworks set out by Jive, in particular, and that he ought to pursue what feels right for him, wherever that may lead–and regardless of whether it seems “commercial” or not. As for what David wants, your presumptions in this regard are misguided. David himself has admitted that he doesn’t yet know “who he is as an artist,” and is most decidedly in an exploratory phase. We only wish that those explorations were allowed to be broader and deeper than it seems his label is inclined to allow.

I have serious ODD for David. I am not some teeny bopper here but yet a 47 year-old woman who can’t stop checking every fansite at least once a day to see what’s new with David. I thought I would just write down the reasons why I absolutely LOVE and ADORE David. His voice, his amazing connection to the songs he sings. The compassion and emotion he evokes in every song he sings. His sultry and soulful sound. His connection to his audience. His looks – he’s adorable, cute, funny, kind. His humanity, tenderness, gentleness, patience and spirituality. I just think he is the best thing to happen to me in my entire lifetime. Every time I hear his voice or see him on TV or on a YouTube video it puts a smile on my face. No other artist can put a smile on my face like he does. He has made me feel happier and more positive and joyful about life. Anytime I have a conversation with someone, no matter what it is about, I somehow manage to turn it into something related to David (and I’m really good at this I’ve noticed). I guess I could go on and on and on. But, the main thing is David has changed my viewpoint on things and my life in general. I will never forget the electricity when he came down the escalator at the Virgin Megastore for his CD signing. Yes, I got to meet him and get his autograph but was so starstruck and nervous that when I got up to him I forgot everything I wanted to say or do (I could kick myself for not at least shaking his hand) and it was only for like 30 seconds but it was the best time of my life.

pabuckie – You’re in good company here at ND and if you really want a chance to meet him again, I just found out that tickets to his Chicago House of Blues concert can be had for $72, $96, or $300 each!!
It appears the tickets sold out in about 15 minutes and now ticket scalpers are taking advantage of his popularity and his fans.

I think I am being misunderstood here. I know what WE ALL want for David and how much his VOICE means to us all. But, again, I see these generalizations that Jive (who by the way are not his management, Azoff is, in concert with his Father) are marketing him in the wrong way. Rascals statement:
“Our issue is that he should do it on his own terms, as a unique and individual artist.”
How do we know what David’s own terms are? How do we know that he is being forced down a particular path? If we follow this path of logic then we are giving credance to the “stage Father” description that was brought up on AI. We are insinuating that David is merely a pawn in this game and that he isn’t given the opportunity to voice his opinions.
We continue to talk about what David should be doing not how well he is doing. That is where I am at. We should be reveling in the fact that David gets new fans everyday, that he is getting brave enough during his live performances to throw in A’capella songs, that he still likes to sing covers and that he is as good as the original artist if not better – much better.
I’m just saying that this is David’s career. We need to show support, to encourage others to listen him, to go the extra mile to make sure his concerts are well attended by a great mixture of individuals. We can express our dreams for him…but we have to be realistic at the same time.

Tess, can’t add much to Rascal’s wise words, but I think the trouble some have with letting David be David is that his talent’s almost too big for any contemporary genre to handle. It’s like watching Yo-Yo Ma join a zydeco band.
That said, I think most of us here are willing to let David take us on any musical path he so chooses … white flag… we surrender gladly ….

I don’t know about you, Tess, but I’ve had enough proximity to the music business, and rather close association with other aspects of show business, to know that artists in David’s position have very little to say about the vast majority of “career direction” decisions that are being made — especially in areas like marketing and promotion. Until one month ago, David was not even in a position to legally make or agree to those decisions himself. Call it “stage dad-ism” if you like, but the fact of the matter is that every contract that David is currently serving was signed not by him but by Jeff.

“I don’t think that this is working, reaching so hard my hands are hurting…..” – My Hands by David Archuleta
Oh, sorry. I got carried away singing “My Hands”.
What I meant to say was I don’t think this interview was posted here, and it’s a good one from jaredinsider.
Idol Worship: Catching Up With David Archuleta
David Archuleta within driving distance? We’re there! Since Archie was back in Hollywood last weekend to shoot a performance for the Nickeleodeon hit show iCarly, we decided to pop by the set and catch up with last season’s American Idol runner-up. We arrived to to find David and iCarly star Miranda Cosgrove knee-deep in taping promos for his guest-starring role (airing Feb. 7), which can only be described as moments of acute awkwardness. But he got the hang of it soon enough, and even hinted later that there could be more acting gigs in his future. After performing two songs for the network’s “Crush Night” (his first hit, “Crush,” and second single, “A Little Too Not Over You”), David sat down to talk to us about this new phase in his life, and what may come next (a duet with Miranda?!). Read on for our exclusive (and classic Archie) Q&A…
First off, how were your holidays?
David: It was so nice to be home because I haven’t hung out with my brothers and sisters for so long. They’ve changed a lot over the year, and I didn’t even notice. My 12-year-old sister has really matured. And my 9-year-old sister, well, she’s kind of the same, but my brother’s even taller. It was great to catch up with them and see what they’re into because I didn’t realize how out of the loop I was. It’s like, you don’t appreciate how busy you are until you come back and realize, “Woah, I missed a lot of my family life!” So I’ve been spending time with the family. My birthday is between Christmas and New Year’s, so we all went to Las Vegas together, saw “Blue Man Group,” you know…
And you were at the inauguration in D.C.?
David: I sang the National Anthem at the Latino gala, which was fun. Obama didn’t come by, but there were a lot of cool people there. I got to meet Jennifer Lopez and Marc Anthony and they were super nice. They’re some of the most well-known Latino people and were just so warm, welcoming and embracing to everyone. I was shocked that they knew who I was, but they watched the show! Marc was saying, “She calls you her other man and normally, if she did that, I would kick their… But you’re OK.” I was, like, “Awesome!”
So here we are on an entirely different kind of stage. How did you like your guest-starring experience on iCarly? Did Miranda give you pointers?
David: I didn’t really ask for any. It’s kind of like, the more you do it, the more you get the hang of it and find your own way of acting. I hope to do more acting — nothing too fancy or serious, more fun like this. But it’s amazing to see how Miranda is in person, because she plays pretty nasty characters sometimes, like on Drake and Josh and in School of Rock. But we had a great time and I love hanging out with her. It’s nice to work with someone who’s in a similar situation, because Miranda has a record deal, too.
She’s hoping to have an album out this summer, and told us she’d love to do a song with you.
David: Like a duet? That would be way cool.
Speaking of duets, you had your younger brother Daniel play with you at Sundance. Can we expect to see a repeat on your upcoming tour?
David: I don’t know. That was kind of an experiment to see how it would go, and my brother still has some work to do. But it would be cool to have him come out on tour and play with me. It’s more special that way, when you have someone who means a lot to you up there on that stage. And the thing about Sundance was, he got to experience a little bit of what I went through.
Any plans to pull a Jason/Michael Castro move on a future season of Idol?
David: Idol is not his thing, really. He just likes to play guitar and stuff, he doesn’t have that big American Idol voice. Plus, he already has his own fans. A video he put up on YouTube got over 100,000 views, which is crazy.
How are you liking the more positive Idol so far this season?
David: I like it a lot. I still feel bad for people who do bad, but I’m so happy about the new setup and that Kara Dioguardi is there, because she has a lot of knowledge, experience and spunk. And she knows what she’s looking for.
You’ve called her tough before. Was she like that working with you in the studio?
David: She just told it like it was. She’s that kind of person — really forward, but easy to talk to and work with.
She and Simon do seem to clash a lot. When it comes time to voting, who do you think viewers will listen to?
David: Simon. People still put their trust in Simon, where they’ve kind of built their foundation on what Simon says. Like even if they like something, they’ll change their mind if Simon says it’s terrible. Or vice versa. He has a strong influence on people. But I think will Kara will shake that up a little because she’s new and has really caught people’s interest. Plus, she has a lot more experience with writing. But we’ll have to see whether they agree with each other. I’m sure they’ll try to have some tension there to liven things up. No matter what, it’ll be good for the show.
This year, they’re also having the Top 12 live in one house. How do you think that would have played out on your season?
David: A house together with, like, guys and girls? That’s kind of risky. I think it would’ve been tough. We had roommates, but I like my privacy. Especially with performing; you’re out there in front of everyone and meeting so many people and smiling for so many pictures, it’s nice to have a moment where it’s no one but yourself. The we-all-live-here-it’s-all-fair-game kind of thing? I don’t know.
Any plans for you to perform on the show this season?
David: I haven’t been approached yet, but I’d like to, even though it will be kind of weird to be back on that stage.

Oh and Tess: I think the comparions to the greats are just that- not in musical styles….
What I want is David Arcuhuta unbridled,,,, which is?
Gosh, I don’t even know, but maybe a lotta soul, a dash of R & B, shake in pop, some jazz on the side , some cool runs, a strong melody and good lyrics equals great music. ( any and all combination above …….works for me)

Oops! I got interrupted by surprise and had to send that post (178) before I was ready…
Two more things:
~Arriving early at the venue would interfere with the 4:00 pre-show fanvention.
~The Starparking passes that allow a special entrance were sold out before I could buy one. There were only 90-100 sold, but each one is good for a carload (8 people)
Do any of you that have the starparking pass plan on going early and would you have room for “one more”?
90-100 passes (each good for 8 people) can still potentially mean hundreds of people waiting in the special entrance line.
I’m not sure what to do about this, but I’m not even sure of my options until I know if someone has a Starparking pass and extra room to car pool from a nearby location (shopping center?)
It’s difficult for me to post right now, but I’ll keep checking back as often as I can find a way to this evening.

rapture and rae – I’ve been thinking about the lining up early thing too. The shows I’m planning on going to are all GA. I think the trade-off is whether you want to spend the afternoon/evening in line or maybe spend that time gathering for dinner with some NDers and just take your chances. These are all medium-sized venues, and I’m thinking that I won’t get too crazy about needing to be in the very very front.

I am going to do a post-concert party and will send details to all going to Sayreville so if ppl go early and miss the 4pm they can catch those of us who are staying overnight or can stay late after the concert.

David Concerts seem to be selling out in the venues that are in or near the cities/states where he has already appeared, either in the AI tour or Jingles, or radio appearances, so David is well known in those areas and has large fan bases there already. In areas, like Albuquerque NM, where there has been virtually no promotion of David yet, and where he has never appeared, the venues will sell out, but not as quickly. IMO!

it’s all good… and I think my thoughts apply to all of the SRO venues in a way, not just Sayreville.
there will either be enough room for all the tickets sold or there will not be….
if there is enough room for everyone (ie:not sold to the fire limit) then it won’t really matter when you get there unless you are absolutely willing to be one of the first 20 in line and willing to firmly stake your claim (and not visit the bathroom) and/or they let you in slowly. Albany and HRC had plenty of room…. mosh if you want, not if you don’t..its all good because there is plenty of room and consequently you can see from everywhere- the place is small…
if we are sold to the limit then it won’t really matter when you get there unless you are absolutely willing to be one of the first 20 in line and willing to firmly stake your claim and/or they let you in slowly…it will be unpleasant everywhere. The very front rows will be able to see and the back will probably be preferable to the center of the mosh…
point is ..you can’t control what you can’t control and feeding your own anxiety doesn’t make for a fun time, LOL!
btw- I was told this venue is selling below their capacity in deference to the “type of crowd”—(translation: not wild maniac heavy metal types that love to mosh like sardines) I would like to think that this remains true and they don’t release more tickets since it sold out so quickly…
at any case…everyone will endure and arrive whenever it makes them feel safe and secure…..me? I don’t plan on standing on line for hours. When we arrived at Albany we arrived well after the doors opened and literally walked right in.

After seeing the announcement of sellout in Phoenix, am feeling real fortunate to have stumbled upon the site late last night/early am & bought my tickets (2). ebonyangel, sweetonda & highervibe – hope you have yours as well. Let me know if not. Haven’t asked my niece yet as she is all involved with the SB this weekend. She likes the VOICE but isn’t ODD.
mommuzboys#126 – Have you watched the JB Sacramento You Can performance. Being a first time concert goer, if he performs that song (or any of his songs) like that in concert, not sure what will become of me. Hopefully, I survive to see his entire set. Am sure I’ll be incapable of capturing it on vids as I can barely accomplish anything while/after viewing it.
Whle weaning myself off ODD – mostly due to lack of much on internet or tv – been watching all his performances from AI. Really watching & listening. Have gained an even greater appreciation of him (if that’s even possible). It’s all about the “message”. Wow, talk about rip my heart out: Another Day in Paradise (…about those who have nothing) – don’t think a vacation to Mexico will ever be the same; Smokey Mountain Memories – reminded him of his home & family; etc, etc. He really does sing with so much genuine emotion & I do get that gift of connecting with the spirit. Just never realized that music was soooo deep.
Was listening to You Can & realized that that could be my (our) anthem…….”this is where it all begins, so tell me it’ll never end…….if I could wish upon tomarrow, tonight (concert night) would never end…if you ask me I would follow but for now I’ll just pretend…….” Uh huh, that would be me. I think I’m his mirror…”and I know, yes I know……” Oh HELP………………

I absolutely love David’s pop album. I can’t wait to hear him sing much of it live in Beaumont. I was not a pop fan before. Ultimately, the genius of David is that he can NOT sing anything without sounding awesome. Not just his voice, but it’s also about the intelligence he brings to any song with his choices.. when to hold back, when to let go. Rascal once described a song by David as something (paraphrasing) that hums and hovers near the ground and then at some point lifts up and then soars. When the fully realized David walks onto the stage at Carnigie or Lincoln Center, I don’t care what genre he sings, as long as it reveals HIS intention and passion and gift in whatever way he interprets those things to be. I love what he is now. But he is not what he will be. I think David knows that too. He has studied music from many time periods and from all over the world. I think he still considers himself a student. I love that about him, his devotion to his gift. He may at times compromise on style, but never substance. What I guess I am saying is, I don’t think anyone here is critisizing his choices, just wanting them to be more and more HIS as time goes on. Some of the choices at this stage I believe are his, but not all. Consider this though.
Crush was his first single ever. It went Platinum. The album was done in a rush between tour stops. It is now Gold. There are some of us who understandably, tremble a little at the thought of what a fully autonomous David is capable of producing.

Just thought I’d check in and report what I know about the Allentown concert.
This morning I spoke with someone at the venue and was told that Ticketmaster sold out of 600 pre-sale tickets within hours. She did not say how many pre-sale tickets they personally sold from the venue (that is where I bought mine). Tickets go on sale tomorrow and she is certain they will sell out quickly.
The stage at the Crocodile Rock Cafe is 5 1/2 ft. off the ground so you can see from wherever you are. The bar area (the over 21 section) seats 100. I was told the under 21 area is right up at the stage. Also was informed they expect the tweens to be lined up to get in the morning – doors open at 6 PM.

whoever above suggested mike kompass as the accompanist (keyboard, guitar, drums…actually played all of the instruments on SOT) if he’s not going to have a band then I love the idea of MK…an opportunity for David to play with an accomplished and experienced accompanist and with a musician that he has a personal musical connection with, a musician who knows the business and who can presumably mentor David.
it will be interesting if he has no backing track at all and goes totally acoustic …has this been confirmed?

I really hate to say good night, but I have a “date” with my son tomorrow..we are basketball nuts..and LOVE our U of L Cardinals! The Cards are playing WV at noon and I haven’t been to any of the games this season. So I have to get some rest..I get crazy when our Cards play..I luv ‘em..not as much as I luv David..but close, at least til the season ends..So good nite all!
So great to have rascal back, even for a couple of great posts! Good vibes going out to you, rascal!
And for David..even though he has us going cra-zeh!..
CONTIGO SIEMPRE CON AMOR!

Everyone here already knows that David is a great singer, and should not have to “pay his dues” by going through the charade of being a “heart throb teen idol” before he is allowed to perform at his real level of talent.
He’s a singing “Doogie Howser”. Doogie was not made to
endure the boredom of schooling that he had already mastered, and went directly to the level that belied his chronological age, but not his talent.
David was too “dang” good for American Idol, and he’s too “dang” good for this teeny bopper masquerade that his “shnurer” management team is subjecting him to. If a ballplayer is great, who cares if he’s 18 or 38. He belongs in the Major Leagues. David needs to be unleashed in all his glory. Does anyone think that a mere teen idol could sing a sophisticated song like “Imagine”, or “WYSYLM” the way David did? There was nothing “cute” about those performances. They were stunning performances sung at the highest level. How long are we going to have to endure this “phase” in David’s career before he is allowed to be what we all know he is NOW? I know he’ll get there, but they’re moving him along at a glacial pace, and I’m not that young, if you get my drift.
I don’t want to be in a mosh pit in New Jersey when I’m seeing him perform. He belongs at Alice Tully Hall where the great, respected artists perform. I want to have my tuchis in a chair when my body is ungulfed in chills from that Voice that nobody else on earth comes close to having.

Bliss, I totally agree with you about the tuchis in the chair thing. I would love to be comfortably seated in a small venue. (Our fantasy ND intimate annual private show comes to mind). But I don’t mind David gaining the experience of carrying a whole show in a less intimidating venue than Alice Tully Hall.
I think about someone like Sara Bareilles who played at the Fillmore in San Francisco. This is a 1000 person dancehall. I’ve seen the video of her singing Gravity and she had the quiet, rapt attention of every person there. Everyone is standing, but it’s not a crazy moshpit scene. The audience is hanging on her every note.
It is yet to be seen how these solo shows will play out. Will the crowds be young and screaming? Will the crowd quiet down to listen to every nuance in the Voice? I for one, don’t mind standing and dancing to the Voice. This experience may or may not have the intimate moments of chills that we all love, but it WILL have the delight of watching David strut and hunkerdown and interact with a live audience. Oh my, the thought of a full concert with David is making me giddy with happiness!!!
So Bliss, what will you do? Go to one of the solo tour shows or wait?
And rascal, what will you do?

I hate to admit it, but, when it comes to David, I’m a bit of a snob. In many ways, David is more evolved spiritually than I am. David is more patient than I am. He sings because he loves singing. He doesn’t think he’s “above” singing a pop song aimed at young girls, because he respects young girls and their feelings. He’s a remarkable young man in so many ways. My advice to everyone when it comes to David is simply “Watch and learn.” He dignifies everything and everyone just by showing up. He’ll be great on this tour, and it will bolster his career. Patience, patience, patience.

I think we all want our tuchis in a chair for The Voice. For one thing, I get a little weak in the knees when I hear him. Maybe it will happen sooner rather than later. I don’t worry too much about his career path. Something tells me he’s on his own trajectory and things, as he says, “happen for a reason.” Everything he is going through is a needed step on the journey and is making him what he will become. Maybe some of what he needs to learn is to be more assertive and more aware of how great a gift he actually has. Maybe he needs to learn how to infuse the power of (pop)ular songs into his own work, creating a style of music unlike anything out there. Two things are for sure. He is gaining momentum and gathering an immense wealth of information about what works and what doesn’t. I believe in the end, that what he does with what he learns, will, in the world of music, be seminal.

Bliss – I totally agree with you, however, I’m too ODD to miss any of these concerts – even with the moshing. Incidentally, I saw Dylan in a beautiful old theater in Harlem, (Palace theater), last November. Throughout the entire concert, everyone stood – so even if you have seats, people are still going to stand through a concert – and these were not young kids, they were exactly the age you would expect to see at a Dylan concert.
BTW – there are very few people here that will now what “schnurer” means – however it was a perfect description…LOL

Nina,. I was pretty much out of commission for a couple of weeks, but I’m feeling much better. Thanks.
I was at the CD signing at Virgin Records, and I have never felt such electricity in the air in anticipation of his arrival. I can imagine that it will be even more electric at his concerts. I’ve been revisiting someof the videos of his performances on AI, and on tour, etc. They are just so powerful. “Love Me Tender” is still my favorite.
The look of utter sincerity and vulnerability on his angelic face, combined with the beauty of his voice and his obvious respect for the song, is just too much.

BLISS – we have seen how much of a sponge is David. He takes away something from whatever he was involved in/with. So the tour won’t be any different.
I, for one will be staking my collection on AllThingsDavid (and since we are hypercharged with ODD here, you all know that that is nothing to sneeze at! haha), that from this tour, he will finally see and learn (a) how much he is loved & (b) how much of a power draw he is, all by his lonesomeHe!

Good (early) morning everyone – once again.
Looks like I missed out on some fun last night – thanks to TWO long distance calls from relatives who got in a fight and want me to choose sides. Utter drama and utter nonsense!
I should have gotten off my phone earlier and just come to ND. At least when WE fight, it’s over something (or someone) important – like wishful managing of David’s inevitably successful career!
Bliss, you are so on fire! Great that you’re feeling better.
I totally agree with your point. Why should David – he of vocal prodigy talents – wait to “pay his dues” when he’s ready to play in the Major Leagues now? But, I also know, as much as I’d love for him to grace the halls of Carnegie and Lincoln Center, that I did not hesitate – when David came to town – to get to the nearest “mosh pit” (located by a dollar store no less!) just to see and hear David live.
No doubt, if I didn’t have other obligations and if David performed near where I could get to him, I’d be going to this tour too. And who knows? By the time some Archie uploads on YouTube a vid in which he’s belting out my favorite song, Waiting for Yesterday, and he does some mad crazy vocals on my favorite falsetto part – “Oh No, never let goooooooo!,” that just might send my head spinning, my heart racing, and my common sense out the window as I scramble for overpriced scalped tix and equally heavy priced airfare and hotel to get my “tuchis” to the nearest venue featuring his solo tour. Obviously, there’s something to be said about this particular path that David’s label/management has carved for him at the moment.
If there’s anything that I wish his label/management would do is to figure out a way to simultaneously market to his multifaceted audience. To pull in both the “music snobs” such as yourself, Bliss, and Rascal and others (I could include myself here except I listen to everything) and the younger crowd. I want an Elton-John/Billy-Joel/Alicia-Keys “piano man” teen sensation type vibe for David, in which there’s no question that the “heart throb teen idol” is also a gifted musician.
We shall see where this journey takes us. However, once all the pop-friendly tunes are released for public consumption and his label doesn’t settle down into something more serious for David – say, if by the time late summer/early fall rolls around, and they don’t release an awards-worthy track like “Somebody Out there” in time for awards nominations, then we will know that they really don’t see David in the same way we do.
Of course, ALTNOY is already awards-worthy (for Best Pop Male Vocalist), so there might be a method to their madness. Then again, I’m sure we all remember that ALTNOY was not intended as a second single – until it showed that it had more potential than Touch My Hand. Looking at what the label intended, and what his fans demanded, this just might be a long contentious battle in which the label only sees the “teen cutie” while his fans know and long for The Voice.

Bliss, you are a word weaver! As someone who has experienced the the Voice from a mosh pit , I must say it was a very unique experience.
When I look back at vids of those Albany performances I think ,,, how loud and rude and crazy those fans are…
but being there… I was totally into it. David’s voice and energy and the electricity in the crowd was just amazing… It’s one of those things that can’t be explained ,but experienced.
That said, I long for the day when we can sit in a quiet hall, in seats, sans screaming and posters and just absorb the Voice. That day will come, but I’m here for the whole ride. woot woot

kizzi/refnaf/bliss–I had a GREAT time in Albany….. loved it…..but, I HATED the Albany crowd, LOL!!!!- didn’t mind the moshing AT ALL..it was actually fun and added to the energy/experience (minus the big hair in my face, haha) but the shrill, never ending, and indiscriminate screaming from the youngins required me to summon up every ounce of tolerance I could muster…oh youth, always a double edged sword
the thing is…the moshpit tour thing is, for me, something I think I will only be willing to take in small doses…it was fun in Albany because it was my first time seeing him other than at the AI tour…. and I’m excited about Sayreville and Allentown because its all still new ….go with the flow, embrace your silly self, engage in ODD parties …but the venue really does not suit him. Also in Albany he had the groovin’, hunkerin’ down, glance away inducing, (annoyingly loud) live band..this will perhaps be different, so the crowd energy is an unknown quantity…

Exactly my point when I said that at age 60, I HAVE to go for it! See him when I can, wherever I can. I hope I live to 100 just to keep witnessing the power & glory, the gift he gives us every time he opens his mouth in song!
Kizzi..haha! Why am I not surprised you already have your tickets to Reno? Hope to see you there!
happy..I haven’t witnessed David in a mosh pit..but I will in The Sunshine Theater..and what you said about…
“the venue really does not suit him” regarding Sayerville, is exactly what my sis thought when I called & told her about The Sunshine..She said it wasn’t near good enough for someone like David. My heart sank..I thought OH NO! But it’s a venue like Albany, Sayerville, and some of the others..a mosh pit. Wherever I stand will be OK with me as long as I can hear THE VOICE. My sis said the acoustics are great in The Sunshine and it also has a RAISED glass enclosed bar in the center of the floor which is actually the best view of the stage so maybe that’s where I’ll be parking myself. I can’t see myself vying for space in front with a bunch of young girls! Don’t wanna have ta punch anyone out and be arrested in my hometown for child abuse at the David Archuleta Concert..I would NEVER live that down! Best I just go behind a glass enclosed cage!
I’m listening to THE ALBUM as I’m getting ready to go to the ball game with my son, and I have to stop, close my eyes and just listen..THE VOICE just takes me away, to a place I go every time I hear his voice in song..a place no one has ever taken me! You all know what I’m talkin’ about..every song affects me in a different way…
See ya’ll later..have a great day!

Hey, does anyone remember which interview it was where David talked about why he chose to sing the third verse of Imagine on Idol? There’s an Arizona tour article out where the writer pulls up an ancient Ann Powers piece as a source for his claim that David was too devoutly Mormon to sing all three verses. I’d love to link to the article where David put this claim to rest. Folks have already listed youtube vids for the guy, but he says he’s choosing to believe Ann Powers over actual video. LOL?

Happy259 – it was the metal walls and ceilings that were pinging to the music in Albany that was unique *rolls eyes*
….tween/teen…I feel basically ageless (except for mirror time) when it comes to enjoying art…let the nay sayers have their say, no explanations…why lend credence to their silliness. …hopefully they can remove their blinders and enjoy THE VOICE…and there is nothing wrong IMHO with the way tweens/teens girls express their appreciation of David (for most of them it is DAVID 1st, music 2nd –ahhaha)…ummm, I know firsthand with my granddaughters (10 & 13) and I get to be just as tweeny/teeny about David when I am with them and it is loads, I mean MEGA loads of fun…..he will have a lifelong fan base and as they develop discrimination for music styles and artistry, his music will be appreciated more and more as they grow with him.
…as far as going to concerts, does my age make me ineligible? It is about THE VOICE, a tenor above all tenors of a generation…so he chooses to sing pop…sprinkle in a few SOTs, LMT’s, an ATM here and there topped off with an occasional OHN and I am sublimely blissful….I fall in that camp of people who don’t need to meet celebrities…oh, I did meet David who is just a young man (enjoys his age)…who comes from a sheltered background (like moi and many others) who happens to have a VOICE that takes me to places I define as divine….(no he isn’t divine…he isn’t going to unlock the secret of life for me…he isn’t complicated on a personal level)….who was trying to figure out why he has fans and was unfailingly polite and indefatigable in that pursuit…who is kind, sensitive, and humble…but (no tomatoes please) I know lots of great people with great qualities who are not celebrities who teach me so much about being human…the combination of David’s talent with his core characteristics is what is so fascinating and well deserves the attention and admiration it garners….so the journey for me is to watch David grow as a human being and develop his artistry and define who he is as a musician and singer…and whatever he sings, I’ll enjoy because after all he gives us all that he is plus…THE VOICE!
Just watched ALTNOY video on my home theater system with my extended family eating breakfast this AM – 5 feet of David screen shots….and THE VOICE….and, ya know, every member of my family from 3yo – 95yo were caught up in the video….his artistry is ageless, I tell you, ageless!

He didn’t sing the full song for the studio version, Marlie. (I’d have loved that — but I love the version I have, too.) I know he sang the whole song on numerous occasions, and people are telling that to the Phoenix writer but he isn’t listening. Kait261 – I don’t remember an interview where he explained his choice. He doesn’t sing the word “hell” though. I believe he did sing all three verses when he was 12 on a TV performance. Dean Kaelin in his journal also said he didn’t sing the verse with “no religion” because of his beliefs when on AI but I have found some discrepancies between the journal and other information sources. Yet, he sang Imagine with all three verses since AI….so someone has an agenda there or maybe just miscommunication at its zenith…interesting!

Kait, I don’t remember where, but I do remember David explaining why he chose the third verse.
I’m paraphrasing here from what’s left of my memory…
He said that Imagine is such a great song, but people are often put off by the first verse and don’t listen/hear the meaning of ths song. He sang the third verse not only because it was his favorite and had a great message, but also so that people who may have dismissed the song at the first verse would have an opportunity to appreciate the song.
I remember thinking how brilliant that was! (naturally) I can’t remember if the interview was written or live. I feel like I SAW him say that, but sometimes I picture David saying what I’m reading, so I may have supplied the visual myself.
Does my accoung jog anyone’s memory?

Iamblisskasden, once again I see how much you really get David. David sings because he loves to sing and he is never focused on himself. It’s about others. He knows that when he sings ” he feels the Spirit and others feel it too” I know that some don’t know what they are feeling, and that’s okay too, but, I do know, he sure moves all of us.

Where is David?!! Possibly practicing somewhere? Doesn’t he realize we want to watch him practice? And comb his hair. And tie his shoes. And whatever. I don’t even know what shoes he wore all week. Deprived. And then I tried to buy tickets to I.F. and receive a “sold out” notice at the time they supposedly went on sale. Dang it!!

Boy, you guys have been busy! Hard to catch up…
Bliss, welcome back! I hear what you’re saying about the teen idol thing but I keep seeing it from David’s point of view. As humble as he is, how cool it must be for an 18 yr old to be greeted by mosh pits of screaming “beautiful girls” — his face lights up, you can tell he looooves it (though he’d never say). I’m thrilled for him that he gets such love.
And he also loved being so close to the crowd in Albany and (my observation only) feeling like a “real” musician, on the road, workin’ a small grungy club.
Again, so happy for him that he gets to live his dream this way … and for this small window of time where we get to be close enough to look into his eyes while he’s doing it….

I’m melancholy….
I got a call yesterday from the Program Director at WVYB in Daytona Beach, Florida telling me I had won Meet and Greet tickets to see David next Tuesday.
After pricing airfares from Chicago (ouch!), numerous e-mails, and spending hours on the phone with FREO, I called the radio station this morning and told them I couldn’t attend and to give my spot to another fan.
I sincerely hope the lucky person loves him as much as we do.
*sniff*….I need a hug…

fandaforever48 247/248, Thx a million for the link! I just bought my Tempe ticket and I look forward to hanging out w/you and others in the mosh pit.
I work near the Marquee. If you need a ride to/from the dinner & venue, I’m available to give you a lift.
Kait 261, The Phx New Times is a free tabloid disguised as a newspaper. Other than it’s restaurant reviews, most people I know don’t take regard it as a valid news source.
As for marketing The VOICE to teens, sometimes I wonder if I’m actually hurting him more by voting for him on all these popstar, musiqtone, teen choice award, tiger beat, vh1, etc. polls.
Also, not knowing how one gets to be booked at Carnegie Hall and the likes, I wonder if the more elite venues declined proposals from David’s management w/the belief that he couldn’t fill their seats. Given the state of the economy and the number or canceled tours/events due to poor ticket sales (e.g., Janet Jackson, Avril Lavigne, numerous inaugural balls, etc.) perhaps those venues don’t want to take risks w/a newcomer.

TOfan#283: Close enough “to look into his eyes” when he sings takes the live concert experience to a whole new level. He was highly energized and extremely up when he sang at Albany and I totally agree that he enjoys the teens/tweens. Great post!
It is my speculation that he wishes to sing Pop and others in his Circle of Influence wish him to sing more serious music, not the other way around. I also speculate that he wanted this on AI given the songs that were not approved but it was not to be. And, I speculate that no one “forces” David to do anything if he is firmly opposed even though he has a gentle, sensitive demeanor. He appears to me to be quietly strong and silently resilient. If he makes choices or commitments that we don’t agree with, it would be due to youth hood…I just can’t see him as a voiceless puppet or without power.

I wasn’t in the pit though. I decided to hang back, but the place was so small I could still see the expression on David’s face.. sans my glasses!

I do see that “resale” ticket sites are listing the tickets for sale…as much as $150 a wack. Don’t think I want to go there just to give someone that kind of mark-up.

marlie7#294 – I agree. I have read this happens with really hot artists…and some artists when they realize this is happening are able to stop it. On the other hand, I find it also a moment of glee that his ticket sales are garnering this type of attention, albeit greedy and unfair to David’s fans.
SF – I spoke with Grand Sierra in Reno about tickets and it is all GA even though there are seats. The agent said you have to line up and then take your seat….sounds inaccurate info to me. Anyone know anything about Reno seating to me.
Talked to Crocodile Rock Cafe in Allentown this am as I am taking a local group of colleagues and their families to the concert and the agent said the phone has been ringing off the hook and she is extremely busy!

Idaho Falls tickets were released at 10 a.m. Mountain Time and sold out in record time. I was overjoyed when I learned that David was coming to Idaho, but then freaked out when it looked like tickets would go fast. My hand hovered over that mouse for many minutes while I watched the clock tick away. I must have hit it at exactly the right time because my purchase went through in the first few seconds. And then, a surprise! They are VIP tickets (first five rows)!
A few months ago, I lamented about the real possibility I would never see and hear David live. Now I will! Twice! My husband—not a full-fledged David fan yet but definitely MY biggest fan—is driving me four hours across the state and attending with me. The next day we return home in time for me to take my granddaughter to the Boise concert. She’s my cover and someone I can lean on—literally!
Sorry for the rambling (mine isn’t as cute as David’s), but I just had to share with fans who understand how exciting this is for me.

On David and his being controlled and finding himself….the question is…”Is he a genius?”
I think the career/control discussion is fun and as it is with any valid argument we must first agree on our premises …can we agree on a single (?) premise, that is, that David is a “genius?”
Anyway, I was thinking that part of the problem with the whole thing is the manner in which genius is treated in the music/art “business.” Or perhaps worse… that David is not viewed as a genius within the music business.
In many other fields, especially technology, science, and finance, genius is embraced because it is genius that makes the creative leaps that lead ultimately to wealth and/or societal improvements. A useful product/theory/idea is the end result~ wealth is created if you produce something someone wants to pay for. In the music/art industry this cause/effect does not necessarily follow. Wealth can be created without musical/artistic genius and musical/art genius does not necessarily create any wealth at all.
I have had renewed interest in the philosophy of art, aesthetics, and beauty since we have been discussing it and have been reading Kant’s theories. They are crazy heavy and I have been going slowly, but I offer my lame little thoughts on where David fits in…. who would have thought, “Archuleta and Kant~perfect together,” haha. Kant’s theory of genius has been enormously influential.
Kant defines that “originality is a characteristic of genius… and also that fine art properly is never an imitation of previous art, though it may ‘follow’ or be ‘inspired by’ previous art…. (because of the) rule of its production… (art) allows the genius to actually make some specific something that is radically original…. What genius does, Kant says, is to provide ’soul’ or ’spirit’ to what would otherwise be uninspired… (by this) Kant means that which makes something alive rather than mere material. There can be an uninspired fine art, but it is not very interesting (pure beauty may be an example). There can also, Kant warns, be inspired nonsense, which is also not very interesting. Genius inspires (true) works of art and gives them spirit – and does so by linking the work of art to what Kant will call aesthetic ideas… (Kant places) the emphasis on the near-miraculous expression of the ineffable, excited state of mind, he links fine art to a ‘metaphysical’ content, and requires radical originality….”
It was his authentic and refreshing originality that showed up on a banal and contrived reality talent show that we fell in love with. For TPTB to require a genius to fit into a preconceived hole of their own shallow making is to rob him and his audience of his genius. And that. Is my gripe… what say you Rascal?

may I make a change?….I should have phrased it, “For TPTB to require a genius to fit into a preconceived hole of their own shallow making WOULD rob him and his audience of his genius. And that. WOULD BE my gripe… what say you Rascal?

ok…no one is here tonight…so I will just keep going…LOL!
“From this it may be seen that genius (1) is a talent for producing that for which no definite rule can be given, and not an aptitude in the way of cleverness for what can be learned according to some rule; and that consequently originality must be its primary property. (2) Since there may also be original nonsense, its products must at the same time be models, i.e., be exemplary; and, consequently, though not themselves derived from imitation, they must serve that purpose for others, i.e., as a standard or rule of estimating. (3) It cannot indicate scientifically how it brings about its product. Hence, where an author owes a product to his genius, he does not himself know how the ideas for it have entered into his head, nor has he it in his power to invent the like at pleasure, or methodically, and communicate the same to others in such precepts as would put them in a position to produce similar products. . . .”

The word “shnurer” is a Yiddish expression meaning “greedy, grabby, and insatiable”. This is not to be confused with “chazah”, which is to be “pig-like in one’s greed and insatiability”. I learned all my Yiddish growing up in the Bronx in the ’50s and ’60s. If the older Jews didn’t want the “kindilach” (kids) to hear what they were saying, they would whip out the Yiddish to talk to each other. Eventually, all of the kids got the hang of it, and, since it’s such a fun quasi-language to speak, we learned it, and now, 40 years later, we’re the one’s speaking it.
As for David, there are Yiddish words to describe him, too. A few that come to mind are:
1) mench- a person who who is appropriate and says and does “the right thing”.
2) shane punim- sweet face. (thats what my grandmother used to call me).
3)shaygitz- any non Jewish boy (as opposed to “shicksa”- a non Jewish girl.
I remember when I was driving cross country back in the ’70s. When I got to Utah, I was told to hide my Jewish star because they (the Mormons) hated Jews, and “you dont know what they’ll do to you.” As it turns out, the people of Utah are some of the nicest, most accepting people in the country. Who knew? As far as I’m concerned, any culture that can turn out a human masterpiece like David Archuleta is fine with me.

Valbraz 305 and Astrid22 306 I’m a huge fan of “Waiting for Yesterday”, too. I sometimes find myself, while cooking dinner, pulling the weeds, etc., singing random catchy lines from David’s songs…..”I’m not gonna treatcha like he did..”….”Baby when you look at me tell me what do you see, are the eyes of someone you can love?”….”I put the phone on the front lawn, everything that shows time is gone…”….”too many locks, too many cries, too many tears, too many lies”. Does anyone else do this? LOL I guess it’s a symptom of ODD. It’s hard to believe that David recorded all these songs during the Idol Tour last summer when he was younger, because some of them are mature songs for his age. But then again, it’s David Archuleta THE VOICE we’re talking about.
If David sings “Barriers” at Sayreville, someone is going to have to pick me up off the floor unless of course he has already sung the ‘whoaaahs” from My Hands. In that case, I will already be down on the floor!
Happy #328 Love your posts; I see where you’re going with this one and ITA. What Kant says is so like David:

Well, I tried getting tickets for the Pomona show, I must have gotten there at the wrong time because they were all sold out. I tried to get tickets for the Idaho Falls show, and you know the rest of the story.
I am SO EXCITED that David decided to do a show in Salt Lake City!! I already told my husband he is coming with me and we are finding a sitter. No Matter What!!
I was so discouraged that I didn’t get any tickets for those 2 shows, but I AM getting tickets for the SLC show! (fingers crossed). I hope those that live in this area of the country had better luck than me.
I can’t wait to hear all your wonderful experiences from the shows. That iCarly show seems cute too.

Happy#328 I enjoyed so much reading your post. I hope Rascal will comply with your request and give us his thoughts on it. Would love to hear his views on the industry’s ability to deal with genius.
You ask, “Is he a genius?” I truly believe he is. My first realization of this came after I saw the video Rascal posted right before the finale called, Finding His Voice. There was something about it that went beyond the words: I FELT his passion for music. I just knew after that, that this was no ordinary singer, but a great artist, for whom a significant part of his reason for existence was his ability to find expression for his genius.
That was when I knew why I had ODD. I have heard of people referring to this disorder as an infection and have used the phrase myself of (contracting a case of ODD. ) Tolstoy said, “There is one indubitable indication distinguishing real art from its counterfeit, namely, the infectiousness of art. If a man…on reading, hearing, or seeing another man’s work, experiences a mental condition which unites him with that man and with other people who also partake of that work of art, then the object envoking that condition is a work of art. And however poetical, realistic, effectful, or interesting a work may be, it is not a work of art if it does not evoke that feeling (quite distinct from all other feelings) of joy and of spiritual union with another (the author) and with others (those who are also infected by it.) If a man is infected by the author’s condition of soul, if he feels this emotion and this union with others, then the object which has effected this is art; but if there be no such infection, if there be not this union with the author and with others who are moved by the same work__then it is not art. And not only is infection a sure sign of art, but the degree of infectiousness is also the sole measure of excellence in art. The stronger the infection, the better is the art as art.”
So many of us have been bewildered by the amazing power ODD has on us. I have never experienced anything like it. Not even close. If David’s artistic genius is to be measured by this ability to connect on a powerful level with his listener and connect them to each other, then we here are proof that his gift is genuine and of monumental proportion.

Lamblisskasden #335 As a Jewish girl who grew up in the Bronx in the sixties and seventies, your post brought so many memories back for me. You’re right, David Archuleta is a most definitely a mensch with a shane punim! I did some research a few weeks ago and found that there is a now a large Jewish population in Utah! According to the Jewish Virtual Library, there are now 4,400 Jews in the State of Utah! I got interested in the subject when David sang the SSB at Governor Huntsman inauguration. In case you didn’t know, Rabbi Benny Zippel of a Jewish Center in Salt Lake City, offered the invocation at the beginning of the proceedings. Here’s the article.

angelica342- thank you for the quote…love it, love it…Tolstoy sums up Kant much better than I…(
big surprise)… before your perfect quote, I was going to quote Kant’s explanation of “soul” and the relationship between artistic genius and soul…
the necessary element of soul in art is the ability to communicate ideas and feelings that are incommunicable through language and the intellect… and the universality of it is essential…
“The mental powers whose union in a certain relation constitutes genius are imagination and understanding… to get an expression for what is indefinable in the mental state to accompany a particular representation and to make it universally communicable…”

Happy..sometimes, like now in your posts #328-330, you amaze me! Kant’s theories parallel David in so many ways, it gives me goosebumps! And he’s olny 18 and has barely tipped the scale of his artistic brilliance. What we can expect from David in the future is almost more than I dare think about. There are almost no words..and the thing that is most intriguing, is that he still doesn’t realize the extent of his genius. He still lacks confidence, or maybe he has confidence in what he can do, but is not sure the listening public will accept what he has to give. I think he is genuinely surprised & puzzled as to why he has so many older females & males fawning and gushing over him..he doesn’t quite get it. I don’t think either he or his family knew to what extent The Voice was going to affect so many, that The Voice would, as you said of Kant’s theory about what genius does,
“provide ’soul’ or ’spirit’ to what would otherwise be uninspired” to so many. That is the genius of David, or one aspect of his genius anyway.
Thank you for that great post, happy.
Good night all!
And for David, the ultimate artistic genius..
Amen.

Bebereader, what part of the Bronx are you from? I’m from Pelham Parkway. Although I’ve lived in a number of different cities and states, I still consider myself a Bronx boy at heart. I can still taste the ice cream sodas at Krum’s on Fordam Road or the greatest hamburgers on earth, at Smitty’s on Lydig Ave. in Pelham Parkway.
I did notice that there was a Rabbi at the Governor’s inauguration. I just assumed that he took a wrong turn at the George Washington Bridge and didn’t get off Rt 80
until he hit Salt Lake City.
The image of David in a synagogue wearing a yamulka
and maybe a tallis has me smiling ear to ear. Talk about “kvelling….”
Seriously, David is pure magic. Look at all the good “vibes” and warm interaction among people that have never met each other he inspires on ths site. The expression “any friend of —– is a friend of mine” has never been more true than it is when that friend is David. He opens up people’s hearts just by thinking about him. I’ve had people who I’ve been with ask me why I was smiling. The answer was simple. I was thinking about David at that moment. It’s impossible to be thinking about David and have negative thoughts at the same time.

What is going on at ND tonight! I was feeling a little under the weather and fell asleep really early and now at almost 2:00 AM, can’t go back to sleep.
This late hour is very inspiring here, (as if we needed more intellect). I feel like I’m back in college and just too out of it to digest the beautiful words going on to describe, what I always believed to be, David’s natural “genius.” (I think I just rambled on a little incoherently..LOL).
Bliss, loved your Yiddish translation – and as you know, Yiddish doesn’t translate well. As a kid my grandmother lived with us. Yiddish was spoken in my house periodically – I never really got the literal translation, it was never necessary – the intonation and expression of the words just “said it all.” For that reason it is an incredible language, and unfortunately, on its way to become extinct.
Bebe – I would love to read that article about David singing in a synagogue. For me, the thought of him singing in a temple would be…..well I can’t even go there. Which reminds me – this past September, during the Jewish Holidays, I was at my regular service, and while the Cantor, (who is amazing in his own right), was singing away at this beautiful holiday service, – all I could think of was – “What could David could do with this?” It brought tears to my eyes and I became very emotional.

Lambliss The last place I lived in the Bronx was Pelham Parkway from where I moved in the late seventies. Before that I lived on the Grand Concourse and Mosholu Parkway, around the corner from Lehman College and Bronx High School of Science. I remember going to Fordham Road to Alexander’s with my mother and sister every Saturday! We had lunch in Krums or Gorman’s or Schraft’s or the little diner, Corky’s, opposite Alexander’s. Loved going to the Paradise Theater for movies, too. I don’t remember Smitty’s, but I do remember Lydig Avenue right off White Plains Road. Looking back it seemed like a street on the lower east side of Manhattan, with so many stores selling all kind of goodies.
Your visual of David…
“….in a synagogue wearing a yamulka and maybe a tallis has me smiling ear to ear. Talk about “kvelling….”
got me thinking that it very well could be a scene from a movie one day. One never knows with this multi-talented genius of a boy.
You know, Lambliss…I’ve been doing a lot of smiling a lot lately, too and I know that it’s all because of David. Just the other day, I was watching him in an interview on youtube and my daughter walked by and asked why I was smiling. She caught me! As if it’s a bad thing!
Rapture: Grand Concourse and Fordham Road, huh? That’s my territory! LOL I could make a huge list of all the stores that were there back then! (I bet you could too, Lambliss!) Wishing you a fun-filled Superbowl Party tomorrow!
Ninaf: Too bad Yiddish is going to die out soon. It was spoken in my house when I was growing up. Like you, my grandmother lived with us, and as Lambliss also said, she and my Mother used it as the secret code when they didn’t want the kids to hear what they were saying. I feel for you when you described imagining what David could do with the song the Cantor was singing. My mind drifts to David constantly at many different times during the day.
I apologize (Is it too late? lol See what I mean?) but was mistaken when I mentioned that David sang in a synagogue. I did a little digging and found that he didn’t sing in a synagogue. Rather, he made a planned phone call to a synagogue when his voice coach Dean Kaelin was giving a speech on worshipping an idol vs. worshipping God and asked if David would call during the speech to talk about his gift of singing and the responsibility he feels he has to share it with people. It’s on a video on youtube but ND rejected the link when I tried to send it earlier. Search for “Interview With Dean Kaelin Part 2″ on youtube. It’s at about 6:50.

So now I have a 5 hour road trip to look forward to, to see David in concert and I couldn’t be more excited! So Silverfox, I’m using your explanation to everyone who is looking at me weird and wondering if I need my head examined.
Rapture #271- I’m not sure, but I believe David may have said that about “Imagine” in the Slezak (sp) interview. I went to EW’s website to see if I could find it, but the video has been removed. I just came from their website and now feeling all pi**ed off and remembering why I don’t go there. What surprised me though, is how many articles they do have about David, and what I find really funny is, there were several articles about other shows or events, from “America’s got Talent” to “Hell’s Kitchen”, where they mention David. For a magazine that found David so boring and robotic, they just can’t seem to stop talking about him.

happy – Enjoyed your distillation of Kant on genius…very thought provoking.
Angelica – I had not read Tolstoy on true art is an infection and will pursue reading his thoughts on this topic today. Some of Tolstoy’s works are said to have influenced Gandhi and Martin Luther King Jr.
My observations about David as a musician and celebrity revolve around what I think currently is the infancy of his developing leadership (I am a life long student of leadership.) What may appear as a lack of confidence seems to me to be more in the vein of coming to grips with being a leader and I think he is developing into a servant leader.
Servant leadership begins with the natural feeling that one wants to serve, to serve first. Then conscious choice brings one to aspire to lead…The servant leaders primary goal is to make sure that other people’s highest priority needs are being served. The best test to define a servant leader, and difficult to administer, is: do those served grow as persons, do they grow while being served, become healthier, wiser, freer, more autonomous, more likely themselves to become servants? I think many who write about their David experience answer the above question in the positive.
Ten characteristics of a servant leader: listening, empathy, healing, awareness, persuasion, conceptualization, foresight, stewardship, commitment to the growth of others, and building community. Sounds like David, doesn’t it.
Servant leadership emphasizes collaboration, trust, empathy, and the ethical use of power. At heart, the individual is a servant first, making the conscious decision to lead in order to better serve others, not to increase their own power. The objective is to enhance the growth of individuals.
Through his music, his genius, his art, David leads and his goal is to serve. Rascal described this long ago as the heart connection.

Hey Bliss, ever read the novel, “The Wanderers,” by Richard Price? It’s about a teenage gang in the Bronx in 1962. Great reading (if you can find the book). Speaking of which, last night I stopped by my parent’s house and they know how much I love David, so my mom says to me, “I hope you haven’t already read this.” She and I are both BIG readers (an understatement) and we’re always recommending books to each other (I’m big on non-fiction) so I wondered what she could have for me. She hands me that magazine about David Archuleta–I was so embarrassed! I said her I wasn’t 12 years old anymore and what was I supposed to do–rip out the best pictures and tape them to my bedroom wall? I told her I felt like a fool to which my dad replied, “How do you think I felt buying that magazine?” I said that maybe I’ll take it to Richmond with me and I’ll have David autograph it if I’m lucky enough to run unto him. They had no idea why I was going up there and were really surprised. I’m just glad he’s coming to somewhere close to NC, otherwise I’d have to miss out. Couldn’t make the Idol tour last summer. Just hope I don’t have to stand for hours as I don’t have the stamina but I guess David is definitely worth standing for! I can’t wait, I hope all his venues sell out.
Anyone watching American Idol this year? I only saw the SLC episode on Wednesday where David Osmond was the first contestant shown. Boy, I had a huge crush on the Osmonds back from 1970-73. They lost all their money, too; someone who worked for them embezzled it (think the amount was around $20 million). Anyway, I thought David sounded and looked fine but all the judges had were criticisms and were afraid they weren’t going to pass him even though he deserved it. I was so disgusted that I turned off the TV and went to bed, finding out later that David O. did make it to Hollywood. Heard Dean Kaelin’s daughter wasn’t even shown auditioning. So that’s it for me when it comes to AI. I’m done with that program. The only reason it was worth watching last year was because of David Archuleta and there will never be another David. I also get irritated when I think of how the show treated him as time went on, deliberately throwing him under the bus again and again. I got a feeling this is the last season for Idol and good riddance! Still, I’m glad David auditioned and get on the show. How woud our lives be today without him?

When I checked the dictionary they had this typical definition of GENIUS:
..an exceptional natural capacity of intellect, especially as shown in creative and original work in science, art, music, etc.: the genius of Mozart.
AND this additional definition…
…a person who strongly influences for good or ill the character, conduct, or destiny of a person, place, or thing
I think they should just put David’s picture next to this definition in all dictionaries.
And here is one of my favorite examples of using the word “Genius” in a statement:
“This show was not easy for him, he just made it look easy,” says Michael Orland, pianist and musical director for American Idol, about Archuleta…”He came as a genius and left as a genius. All the participants aspired to reach his level.”

Happy, I loved your introduction to the topic of genius as defined by Kant. I know little, so as usual I take my ND seat as a willing listener/learner.
Kizzi, your description of the servant leader fits David well, and the bit of information is also fascinating.
Lulu, I’m not watching Idol this year, and I won’t unless they change the very nature of the show. I naively believed I was actually voting for the person who:
1. brought their own tools
2. combined them with the ones offered by Idol
3. came out and sang
Now I feel that there are too many big hands, messing with the first two parts of that equation.
Joner, I’ve always loved that quote from Orland. I’m not musically inclined, but of course Orland is, and I think his statement is telling.

Good morning, NDers. Some Sunday morning thoughts:
I watched YoYo Ma’s face as he played the arrangement of Simple Gifts at the Inauguration. His joy was palpable.
I watched my son as he played with his band last night. His whole body was one slowly expanding smile as the music built and swirled around him. The five members of the band were as one, connecting and carrying the audience.
And David – too many innumerable moments to choose from. How about watching his spontaneous smiles erupting the first time he played 1000 Miles at the LA lighting ceremony. Ahh!

But I did most of my growing up years on the Grand Concourse and went to Walton High School and then to Hunter College in the city. Ahhhh spent many Sundays at the Loew’s Paradise Theater, looking up at the stars. Double feature back then, too.

Gee, my timing’s terrible. Missed the fascinating philosophical discussions… Happy, Angelica and Kizzi, great posts! Need to go back and reread.
Came across this quote from Bob Dylan’s memoir (writing about Roy Orbison’s voice), but it reminded me of someone else entirely
:
“[He] transcended all the genres … his stuff mixed with all the styles and some that hadn’t been invented yet … He kept you on your toes… He sounded like he was singing from an Olympian mountaintop and he meant business … He was now singing his own compositions in three or four octaves that made you want to drive your car over a cliff. … His voice could jar a corpse, always leave you muttering to yourself, ‘Man, I don’t believe it.’”

Joner#369 Yes! The simple words you found in the dictionary and in a quote from a musical director who knew and worked closely with David spoke volumes.
I especially loved,
…” person who strongly influences for good or ill the character, conduct, or destiny of a person, place, or thing”
The person, place or thing part kind of blows the mind when you think about it, especially in relation to artistic genius and the act of creation.
Thanks for the Michael Orland quote too. I had read that a while back, but forgot about it somehow. “He came as a genius and he left as a genius.”
I think the show must have been harder on him than we will ever know. I think of that video on Rascal’s blog, Finding His Voice again. It was right before the finale, after fighting the good fight for months and facing the finish line. “I’ve always done my best, you know, always worked really hard, every week, every day….sometimes it gets a little overwhelming. But I’ve always just wanted to do my best and to show people that I LOVE this. It’s not really like, I deserve to be here or anything; it’s to show, you know, this is what I really love about music and I’m just going to show what music can do, what music has done for me every step of the way….because that’s why I’m here…..I hope it’s enough.”

Bliss, you mention Palace Theatre on Grand Concourse, and it breaks my heart. The dilapidated condition of this once splendid “palace” is sad to see.

highervibe – re: Tempe/Phoenix concert.
Don’t despair…the tickets haven’t gone on sale yet from the Marquee theater. There is an online site that has tickets for sale (They buy tickets in bulk and sell them). Don’t know what the mark-up is? etix.com
Tickets from Marquee are $25.00.

David and Schrödinger’s Cat – My son is an aficionado of quantum mechanics and at a young age read a book called “Who’s Afraid of Schrödinger’s Cat?” It is an exploration of quantum mechanics and explanations of reality. Albert Einstein was a contemporary of Austrian physicist Erwin Schrödinger who wrote of quantum mechanics, the observer and reality. He and Einstein corresponded about this theorem. It basically is a theorem on different realities for observers of the same event, item, scene, etc.
Bottom line, reality is viewed by the observer and each observer can have a different view of what is observed based on quantum superpositions and the combination of all possible states of being. The Schrödinger cat experiment remains a topical touchstone for all interpretations of quantum mechanics.
The reason I bring this up is because I had a long discussion with my 24 yo song regarding why I see David as a legend in the making and he can’t. He said this was an example of Schrödinger’s Cat, I see a quantum superposition and he cannot.
I always knew there was a scientific explanation for ODD–not a disease after all; simply metaphysical…a quantum superposition of a state of being that I have the privilege to view.

Tofan #380 That quote is perfect for David. That’s it, isn’t it? You sit and listen and you soar right along with his voice.
“He kept you on your toes… He sounded like he was singing from an Olympian mountaintop and he meant business … ”
Perfect!

Angelica #381 “…I hope it’s enough.” Thanks for that quote. It breaks my heart a bit to think of this sweet high school kid dealing with all the pressure and craziness. We’ll probably never know how hard he worked behind the scenes, or the daily struggles that he faced. The strain showed a bit as the weeks of AI went on, but he gave his ALL in every performance, never holding anything back in his utter and complete surrender to the music.

THANK YOU, ebonyangel, for the etix tip! I got my ticket to Tempe date. I, too, hope it’s legit! I didn’t see anything contrary on a search, in fact, I turned up this:
http://localtechwire.com/business/local_tech_wire/venture/story/2886159/
I’d love to meet up with NDers at Monti’s Casa Viejo, the historic adobe restaurant right near the venue. Maybe we can get one of the banquet rooms for our own mini-fanvention! But I’m jumping ahead of myself… first I have to get the time off, and a plane ticket, etc.!!! Wheeee!

Tess 384, The etix.com mark up is that same as the Marquee. For ex, if you order an $18 Katy Perry ticket from the Marquee website, you end up paying $30 ($2.50 delivery fee, $3 order fee, and $6 ticket fee).
highervibe 389, i’ll make reservations at Monti’s. There should be a large group (us, AZ Sun Angels and Golden Archies).
Bliss 335, thx so much for the Yiddish lesson! Now I see why so many of you wanted the ND concert in NY … you grew up there.

davidfanLIZ #387: “…he gave his ALL in every performance, never holding anything back in his utter and complete surrender to the music.” AMEN to those eloquent words!
I’ve been feeling pangs of David withdrawal today, so it was somewhat comforting to go back to watching his performances on AI. The pure joy and excitement oozing from him on that first night with Shop Around…sheer magic!
I still get goosebumps watching it and realizing what a seminal moment that performance was for me. I was a smitten kitten!
Imagine, Smokey Mountain Memories, Love Me Tender, Angels, DLTSGDOM, And So It Goes…they all still give me absolute chills.
I’m so excited to be attending the Allentown concert and looking forward to meeting up with archiesfan4life and other notingdavid friends from PA and beyond!! So many near immediate sell-outs…hope everyone is successful in getting their tickets.
How satisfying and thrilling it is to know that David is in MAJOR DEMAND and well on his way to a brilliant, illustrious career! And thanks to Rascal and the delightful notingdavid groupies, what a blast it is to be a witness to his journey with all of you

This over at Snarky’s talking about the interview with Mike K. back in early January:
“for those of you who missed it.
i got to chat with him at the beginning of january and it might be helpful to you all for various reasons.
you can read it here. he co-wrote ‘a little too not over you’ and ’somebody out there’ with david. he also wrote a couple other songs that didn’t make the cd. before he was a producer, he was session guitarist. take this as you will. <3″
Now, those ladies have been hinting at a special guitarist on tour with David for a couple of days. I wonder…..

Kizzi #385 Thank you. I knew it I just knew it ! There is a scientific reason for ODD!
Last night when I confessed to one of my friends (one at time) about going to Sayerville with my new freinds from ND I said to her “There is something we are seeing now that you will probably see within the next couple of years.” No use trying to convince her to see it now–It is what it is! I am so happy I have you all to share our Quantom Superposition!
I must say though I have a wide array of music on my IPOD Very eclectic–From Dean Martin, Motown, Sam Cooke, Beyonce, Pink, Queen, Van morrisson Meatloaf, Springsteen, , Otis Redding, Buddy Guy, Jonny Lang, Micheal Buble etc, etc . Whenever I have my eclectic mix playing in in the background and I have freinds over somehow they always tend to recognize The Voice–Isnt that interesting?
